Baptism sponsors

I'm researching ancestors in Dorset and have just come across a Baptism register for Milton Abbas for 1848 and was surprised to see almost every entry had up to 4 sponsors for each child baptised. Can anyone enlighten me as to whether this is a quirk of that church or is it something more widespread...

Place names

Jane,Peter and Mike , Thank you for your replies. Of the three the All Facts Query suggested by Jane was the one that fitted the bill perfectly but I will look at the others again to see how they might work for future needs . There is so much to learn about FH and the assistance given by you and oth...

Place names

Having read a number of threads referring to Place names and addresses I still cannot find any way suggested of being able to list all place names used whether in census ,births, baptisms, marriages or burials. I realise i can get census addresses (or should I say places)using the standard query Censu...

Any advice re War Office Records?

My thanks to Gerry, Richard and Brian for their responses. Some comments on each: 1.Gerry's link took me straight to the instructions for requesting service records and this consists of a 2 part form the second part being related to whichever branch of the services you are looking at. 2.Richard refe...

Any advice re War Office Records?

I have two queries which other forum members may be able to help with. 1. Both my father and my wife's father served in the RAF during WW2. What is the best way to get a comprehensive record of their service including bases in the UK and in Japan and China? Both were in the invasion force in 1945, m...

Ancestral origins diagram?

Many thanks Derek and Mike. I've started working thro' page 86 of the book which is ,I think, the section Derek was referring to. Mike, it is ancestors only I want to show. i think All Relatives will be too confusing. I'll go thro' your instructions after I get thro' the section in the book. Thanks ...

Ancestral origins diagram?

I'm thinking how useful it might be for family members to be able to see a diagram of ancestors with say just their  names, their years ie 1833-1905, and their birth town and county. I can't figure out how I'd even start to create this though. Any suggestions would be most welcome. Many thanks Dagwo...

Basic Stuff

That article was most interesting and until I read it had not appreciated how many formats etc are not copied over when using two m/c's. Esssential reading for all who do.
I must spend more time going through the Knowledge Base.
Thanks for pointing it out Peter

Drop Box follow up

Thanks Jane  but I cannot get it to work. I followed all you said and ensured there was only one folder. It contained a data file, a Gedcom file, and a public file. The data file had a media folder within it. After creating the project and ensuring it was directed to the one folder I ended up with a ...

Drop Box follow up

I have to sympathise with dse123 with regard to his DropBox problem. Despite trying to follow all the good advice from Jane and Tatewise, and others, in earlier threads, I still have problems using DropBox when I syncronise my work as a project. I've tried following Jane's advice of yesterday as I w...

Tidying up after file merges and A.S input.

Thanks Nick, could you tell me whether the deletion of all or part of the log will alter the number shown as Source ID on the main form ie will it reset to zero or a number which reflects the deletions carried out? Could anyone comment on the first part of my original  question ie the wisdom of and,...

Tidying up after file merges and A.S input.

Having got off to an untidy start to my project I see there are a number of file merge records within individual records. I only noticed these at the last file merge and now I'd like to remove these if possible. I'd appreciate advice on whether this is possible and if so how best to do it and whethe...

Problem with multimedia

Thanks Tatewise, Your first para is, I think, the answer to much of my problem. Because the files were in the Media fold assumed I needeed to link to an existing file, I'll correct that from now on. I'll also follow up your advice ,and that of Nick, to use the facility to Work with External File Lin...

Problem with multimedia

Hi there, and many thanks for your replies. Nick, thanks for your link that has been most helpful. I now think I had become confused between media added to individuals before I used AS and media added through AS to support facts. I guess I was expecting to see images appear when I hit Multimedia in ...

Problem with multimedia

I can't figure out what is gioing wrong with my additions and links to multimedia. In adddition earlier additions of multimed...

Why aren't you using Ancestral Sources!

I admire your enthusiasm Gerry but I'm not sure Nick would see it as incentive enough. I bet a few more users like you and I sending a donation would help greatly though.
All best

Checking FH for Ancestral Sources input

Nick and Tatewise, many thanks. I'll come back to the duplicate finder later as I'm trying to figure out how that would assist. Nick, I like how you do it as it seems a neat way of getting the files into the correct census folder at the start. I downloaded the Kinsfolk queries and in trying the Cens...

Checking FH for Ancestral Sources input

I've had a read through old posts but cannot see if there is a simple way to view which census images and hence data have beeen used in Ancestral Sources to record census facts in FH. Am I overlooking the obvious(again)? I have downloaded copies of census images from Ancestry to my PC and believe I ...
