Possible Auto-Text RIch Text Problem
Not sure if this was a one off, but I'll see when I need to do another one. I did a marriage and used one of my own auto-text for a tabular 1812-1837 that I've used many times. This time everything seemed fine as usual, but when I checked the text from source in FH, the table layout was all mucked u...

I never knew you could rename in in AS, you live and learn.NickWalker wrote: ↑13 Mar 2023 17:33Thanks for reporting this. You could just rename them in AS, either by right-clicking them in the tree or using the 'Change name' link.

Census Tree Bug
Love the new tree for doing census entry, but just spotted a bug. I pulled up the tree and spotted a typo in one name. So, I updated it in FH, saved and let AS reload when it prompted. The name had updated in the children list, but when I displayed the tree, it still had the typo. Have fun, and carr...

Re: Using Ancestral Sources
Yeah, the auto-text would be a bit tricky as there are various forms and styles. While generally similar in some cases, there are subtle variations and outliers. Worse case, if you figured out how and what inputs would be needed, so at least all the relevant events and sources etc. got created, that...

Re: Using Ancestral Sources
I hesitated to suggest they could be incorporated. The ones I've had as you say mostly include death date and where or residence at the time, probate location and anyone who is executor/administrator etc. I add them as 'witness' types to the event too. Often the widow/widower is mentioned. As you sa...

Re: Using Ancestral Sources
I have multiple cases of sharing a census image between two or even three sources and that's handled easily in FH and AS. I think I've avoided any image duplications, but if found it's easy to update the source record to refer to one or other media record and then remove the unwanted media record an...

Re: Using Ancestral Sources
A couple of years ago when FH7 came out and supported Rich Text, I decided to re-do a lot of rather poor "Text from Source" sources/citations. I used AS to do a lot of it, and created a bunch of Auto Text templates to produce what I wanted or tweaked versions of those already built in. I still come ...

Re: Birth entries
Looks like a font setting issue of font size in app. Or could also be due to Windows global setting of font size to something more than 100%.

Remember the Search the Internet "Show:" setting
It would be very helpful for the Show: drop-down on the Search the Internet dialogue to remember the last selected option. I almost exclusively use the 'Search Now' sites only option, and it always defaults back to All after every use. With the long list of All, it is much easier to select the searc...

Maritime Census (1881)
I came across a maritime census for 1881 for an ancestor. It's slightly different to the normal one, with fewer columns and Master/Captain's signature. I can use the standard England one, but was wondering if anyone had cooked up a maritime census template (for this or any other years). It's not a b...

Re: Death Entries
I recall asking about this issue or similar a couple of years ago when doing my own birth/death cert (a tabular one) and wanted to know how to get the maiden name. At the time Nick said is wasn't really simple/possible for reasons. I'm not sure if this is still the case. I think it was this thread: ...

Re: Image Titles - suggested enhancement
This is also the case for 1911, as that has an address page as well. I simply save the address file image with 'Address' on the end of the same filename used for the census data page, then add both images in AS as normal. The source record created then has both images in one place (with two media re...

Re: Space before name in Census Conversion causes column shift
It wasn't a major problem to me, as it was only one case out of hundreds of census conversions, and I figured out (at least I though I had) what was happening quite quickly. I just wanted you to be aware of it in case there was an underlying issue that you'd want to tidy up for satisfaction :D Cheer...

Space before name in Census Conversion causes column shift
Nick, I mentioned this before in one of the test threads but haven't seen mention of it in release notes or a comment, so may have been missed by me or you, so mentioning it explicitly here. A space before the individual's name causes the census columns to shift right by one column. I gave the circu...

Re: Use of woman's surname instead of married surname for censuses entries
I think I'd suggest you'd transcribe with the name as given on the census. If you use AS auto links feature, then it is easy to click the entry in FH to get to the individual with their maiden name. It's why I just converted all my census transcriptions to linked individuals. You may have a good rea...

Re: Testing Ancestral Sources v7.6.1
Ok, spoke too soon. The third one I tried happened to have mostly unrelated (not in file) people and a relative as a lodger. One of the unrelated entries was a 3d old, and only had the surname, no given name (probably not decided on at that point) nor relation to head of family (so sex not recorded)...

Re: Testing Ancestral Sources v7.6.1
Didn't spot the update release as I rely on notifications to get me to check the forum. Anyone else not getting them the last couple of days?
The blank occupation shifting birth location right seems to be fixed after doing a quick check.

Re: Testing Ancestral Sources v7.6
I came across an odd behaviour when converting non-link RT census to linked RT. I'd done 1841 and most of 1851, but had one that behaved oddly. I think it's caused by my own failings in the distant past, but curious as to why. I had a 1851 census source but when selected it didn't recognise the peop...

Re: Tutorials
From past experience as a software developer, I know the effort required to do Help files that are actually useful, and including How-to sections. So many I've read basically tell you what you can see without actually saying what they actually do or why you'd want to use a thing. Doing tutorials is ...

Re: Tutorials
Definitly need one as an introduction to customising titles and creating auto-text templates. Too late for me, but I'm sure there are some potential AS explorers/nerds who would be intetested in at least knowing of the possibilities and how to get started.

Re: Testing Ancestral Sources v7.6
A quick check, but is the Fit button on converted (Unlinked RT to Linked RT) supposed to re-fit the grid, as it appears to do nothing at present. Or at least it seems so as there are some quite wide columns with blank space generated, and I thought they'd get shrunk a bit. I just checked, and it see...

Re: Testing Ancestral Sources v7.6
I think I have recalled where I wanted to use the COMMAINDEX at least initially. It was to extract the county from the place/address for headings of Parish register entries i.e. Marriage Sol emnized at .... in the County of =COMMAINDEX[2,{PLACE}] I also had some others where I wanted to do similar....

Re: Testing Ancestral Sources v7.6
Yes, I've used =IF in various places, to be 'clever' but was keeping it simple. I've done some conversions now. The auto-next means it's even quicker at least for 1841. I have found an issue when I got to 1851. The conversion slips the birth location to the Infirmity column where the occupation is b...

Re: Testing Ancestral Sources v7.6
Did a quick test of the RT Plain to RT Linked, and after figuring out the check boxes, it seems to work as expected. I now just have a four hundred or so census sources to convert  but at least it should be quick compared to re-doing them all over again from scratch or manually updating the R...
