Have a look at Split Tree Helper on the file menu. There are lots of options for what you include or exclude.

I hadn't noticed before, but in V3 Export to Gedcom just told you to use split tree helper instead, now they seem to have implemented a variation of it. Not sure why they're different.

That's probably good practice when transcribing (as in Text From Source, Note, etc.), but deciding which is a person's Name as opposed to Alternative Name or Name Used, or whatever, with multiple sources all with different spellings, is a matter of interpretation rather than transcription.

We generally record individuals with their birth/baptism name if we can find it, then in Text from Source if it's different, and (and it's a matter of judgement) as an alternative name if we think it really is one, rather than just a misinterpretation (or mis-transcription... ma...

I think you're right Karen. In any case, you don't need to do anything to your tree, just let Genes do it for you (but from memory, the 'hide living relatives' option has to be explicitly selected rather than the default it clearly should be).

The particular example that continuously bugs me is that I'm always switching off 'Show Birth/Adoption of Children'. I normally work from a diagram and a floating property box... I happened to notice in Tribal Pages, it says things like 'grandfather's second cousin', which I think is much nicer than the ...removed notation, and less ambiguous ('removed' gives no clue as to the direction).

If you bought V3 after V4 was announced, you got a special deal to get a free upgrade to V4 when available. Presumably they had to do that otherwise the announcement would have killed sales of the current version.

I take it to mean relative of the person you're doing the descendants of, which doesn't include their spouses and in-laws, even though those are your relatives.

It seems a tad obscure to me, but if you put the caption in the (untitled) text box at the botton of the Edit Media Item form (alongside the Use Note as Caption check), it seems to work. Presumably there's a distinction between a Picture Note and a Link Note, and it's the latter that you need to use...

Customising the property box changes it for everyone. You can of course add cremation or burial events as appropriate under Facts, but all you can do on Main is show them both, or the one you use most.
