Field to stay in focus on app switch

Can I add, it's not just which field, but where in a text box the insertion point is. When copying and pasting from somewhere into (for example) Where Within in the sources pane of the property box it sometimes puts the new text at the beginning instead of at the end after what you entered before. A...

using notes

I like to think of it in terms of what you're trying to achieve. I use narrative reports a lot to share information with other contacts, so: Information about the individual (as Jon says, biographical notes, etc) go in the individual notes (on the Notes tab). These will appear in the report in their...

Uploading Gedcom files to Ancestry etc

Have a look at Split Tree Helper on the file menu. There are lots of options for what you include or exclude.

I hadn't noticed before, but in V3 Export to Gedcom just told you to use split tree helper instead, now they seem to have implemented a variation of it. Not sure why they're different.

Entry of a Bigamous Marriage (or two)

I think the answer in these situations is simply to record the facts as you know them (as I may have said before once or twice, there are no rules, only conventions, do whatever suits what you're trying to achieve). If you know of 3 marriages, record three marriages. If you know of any divorces, rec...

Marriage Sources and Citations

Ignoring the detail for the moment, my general principal is to add a citation to any piece of information to link it to every source of that information. The point being that you can come back later and answer the question 'how did I know that', and can refer back to the source to check conflicts. I...

Alternative surname spellings

That's probably good practice when transcribing (as in Text From Source, Note, etc.), but deciding which is a person's Name as opposed to Alternative Name or Name Used, or whatever, with multiple sources all with different spellings, is a matter of interpretation rather than transcription.

Alternative surname spellings

I agree with Jane... We generally record individuals with their birth/baptism name if we can find it, then in Text from Source if it's different, and (and it's a matter of judgement) as an alternative name if we think it really is one, rather than just a misinterpretation (or mis-transcription... ma...

I think you're right Karen. In any case, you don't need to do anything to your tree, just let Genes do it for you (but from memory, the 'hide living relatives' option has to be explicitly selected rather than the default it clearly should be).

Property Box Facts to remember preferences

The particular example that continuously bugs me is that I'm always switching off 'Show Birth/Adoption of Children'. I normally work from a diagram and a floating property box... I can see who his wife and children were in the diagram, I want the facts tab to show all the residences, occupations, et...

=Relationship() function - consistent output

I happened to notice in Tribal Pages, it says things like 'grandfather's second cousin', which I think is much nicer than the ...removed notation, and less ambiguous ('removed' gives no clue as to the direction).

Flags on the focus window

Could I extend this a little... It would be nice if the entire content of the individual boxes in the focus window were customisable just like the text schemes in diagrams.

V4 confusion

If you bought V3 after V4 was announced, you got a special deal to get a free upgrade to V4 when available. Presumably they had to do that otherwise the announcement would have killed sales of the current version.

Edit/Repeat and Ability to minimize property box

goodwin2 said: To Chris' mention of:  'Is your 'edit/repeat' the same as search and replace (reference 37)?'  Sorry, didn't find that reference 37.  Not sure if they would function exactly the same but since we don't have either, one of them would be nice. Click Wish List on the left, type 37 in Se...

Edit/Repeat and Ability to minimize property box

I can't really see any benefit in being able to minimise the property box (presumably you mean to the windows task bar) as opposed to closing it and re-opening it from FH's toolbar, which is the same number of clicks, and seems to me a more natural place to find it. Is your 'edit/repeat' the same as...

I take it to mean relative of the person you're doing the descendants of, which doesn't include their spouses and in-laws, even though those are your relatives.

Picture caption in Narrative Report

It seems a tad obscure to me, but if you put the caption in the (untitled) text box at the botton of the Edit Media Item form (alongside the Use Note as Caption check), it seems to work. Presumably there's a distinction between a Picture Note and a Link Note, and it's the latter that you need to use...

Not sure if this covers it, but wish list item 37 might help.

Narrative report, pictures after the introduction

I have pictures set to Above rather than Beside the text because that's the only way that works if you save as HTML or RTF, but what annoys me about that is that they come before the introductory paragraph, so appear at a glance to belong to the person above. I spend a lot of time in Word fiddling w...

Picture of Spouse in Narrative Support

Presumably you're doing descendants of one of his rather than her ancestors, in which context she is a spouse not a relative. You'd get it the other way round if you started with her ancestor. That seems reasonable to me. I have pictures set to Above rather than Beside the text because that's the on...

There are quite a lot of observations on most of your points in other threads under 'V4 Usage', e.g. http://www.fhug.org.uk/cgi-bin/index.cgi?action=forum&board=v4use&op=display&num=3618 (sorry, not sure how to get a link in here) Converting your way of thinking to project folders is annoying if you...

Customising the property box changes it for everyone. You can of course add cremation or burial events as appropriate under Facts, but all you can do on Main is show them both, or the one you use most.

V4 Upgrade

1. FH version 4 does not co-exist in the same installation with V3. That may be a pity, and perhaps it should be made more obvious when you upgrade, but that's how it is. It's not particularly unusual. 2. Most programs that open files of a particular type (e.g. Word, Excel, Acrobat, etc) allow you t...

Yes, I've done that too, but more often not cited when I meant too, and more often again, cited the previous source having forgotten to change it.
