General consideration of the effect of name change

jmurphy said: Perhaps it would be easier to find women in Family Historian's record view if we could have one main entry that follows the style that newspapers use -- list all the woman's surnames in order of acquisition. General consideration of the effect of name change

On second thoughts, I should have seperated 1) into 1a) and 1b) since one is (arguably) a design omission, and the other clearly more controversial... 1a) The ability to find and identify (in all contexts where I need to select an individual by name) people with explicit alternative names by that na...

General consideration of the effect of name change

Wow... At least I provoked some discussion. Yes of course, anything like this should be switch-off-able. In terms of features, what I'm looking for is (for example): 1) The ability to find and identify (in all contexts where I need to select an individual by name) married women by their married name...

Auto-complete

That was another of the things that got me started on Toponymy... I got fed up with typing St Mary the Virgin every time someone was baptised, married or buried in Pirton, Herts.

I agree, but I'd prefer name & life dates to name and record ID. I don't use record IDs for anything meaningful, and have removed them from the interface where ever possible. Perhaps the best answer is to display the box text as defined by the text scheme. And I don't think you need a configurable t...

Auto-complete

There was a discussion about this a long time ago, my conclusion to which was that a) the address needs to be in the context of the placename, and b) drop-down selection is more helpful than auto-complete. That was one of the things that prompted me to write Toponymy... see http://www.fhug.org.uk/cg...

General consideration of the effect of name change

This has been touched on before, but what I'm really asking for now is not a quick fix to a particular report, but as the title says, a general consideration throughout FH of the effect of individuals in the tree changing their names. Presumably something for Version 5+. The most common example is o...

Tab key wont leave format field in multimedia tab

Jon,

The one that really irritates me is when the Return key doen't action the OK button even when the OK button itself is explicitly highlighted as the default button. I'd accept it isn't always convenient to implement it, but in such cases the OK button should clearly be plain.

I get the same effect. I'd be tempted to write it off as one of FH's less irritating endearing little user interface quirks, mainly because I hardly ever edit anything in the records window. I find a combination of a daigram and the property box gives you a much better sense of where you are, and in...

There's also a button below the Facts list called 'List in Order'. I've no real idea of what it's supposed to be for, but you don't get the move up/down arrows enabled unless you press it.

I think it's probably a mistake to try to be too formal with these things. Parish, District, County and Country do not necessarily form a hierarchy at any of those levels, particularly the registration districts in multiple counties, and even villages that cross the England/Wales border, and don't f...

Query on Queries: Say What??

Bilko is absolutely right... Find a query that does something like what you want, save it as a custom query and muck about with it to see what it does. Don't be embarrassed by having trouble getting your head round FH's way of doing it. I do too, and I do this kind of stuff for a living. But it is w...

Difficult to imagine you've entered them twice without realising... If you've been doing some merging, and the facts weren't identical in the two merged records you'd get this effect. You can choose which one to keep in the merge records dialogue, but that's not much help to you now. I don't think t...

I've often used split tree helper with a query like this and never come across a size limit. I haven't used All Relatives because it never quite does what I want. Are you sure you understand what it does? It starts with the individual you name, adds all recorded ancestors and their spouses, and then...

P.S. I'm reminded of a contact we had some years ago about some ancestors, where when we questioned (politely I thought) some link, we got the reply 'I know it's true because my cousin has personally inspected the parish registers'. Well, we've personally inspected a lot of parish registers, and kno...

We often find ourselves tracing the life events of apparently unrelated people with similar names in order to be sure you have the right one. One of the great things about FH is you can record it all and then link them in later if you eventually find out where they fit on your tree. I also occasiona...

Ignoring middle names in record window sorting

I'll give it 5! Thought I'd post a bit of my records window to illustrate the point... Very difficult to scan this by eye to see if you already have some particular William Bowyer. An option (I'd leave it permanently on) to ignore middle names in the sort would make all the difference. As you say Jo...

I prefer to use notes in the marriage for witnesses, but of course this means that you don't get any formal link between the individuals.

To delete the associated person (or indeed any other property of an individual), select the relevant line on the All tab and press the Delete key.
