Places - Space for more information/links
It would be nice to be able to add information about the towns and villages that appear in our tree, not specifically related to individuals or families. We have acquired pictures of churches, old maps (even new maps), postcards, textual information about local history, local web references, and so ...

What Jane says is right provided you have a single individual record linked to both families, but it sounds as if you might have two individual records for the same person... not recommended. What you need to do is link one of them to both husbands (for example, in the properties window, Click to ad...

I think this is just bad choice of wording in the user interface... FH says 'Spouse' when it means any relationship between two individuals (currently restricted to one of each sex, but we have hopes) which constitute a family, but I'm sure it's explained somewhere that this doesn't mean they have t...

How do you organise your files?
What Windows now calls Folders used to be known as Directories in some systems.
There's no problem having folders within folders these days, it's just a matter of whether you want one long list or a number of shorter lists (but more levels) to find when you're trying to get at something.

How do you organise your files?
We have an Ancestry folder containing sub-folders named for each of 8 (joint) grandparents, and these are subdivided again by name for any branch that gets big. Certificates, scans of other peoples trees, censuses, etc are then all filed together. It seems to work for us, but you takes your pick I g...

Copy amp; Paste from the Report Window
I frequently produce a narrative report of an individual or family to copy into an email in response to a 'can you tell me any more about...' enquiry from one of the web sites. It's just an irritation to have to save it as something to open it in a form I can select and copy from, and then remember ...

Sorry, that sounded more aggressive than I meant it... When I said 'you' I meant 'we' i.e. genealogists in general... but it sort of proves the point. You do in fact know something about the father, in 194-something he was a soldier. Now you have a box to put that in.

P.S. If you'll pardon a bit of preaching... Personally I rather dislike the idea of highlighting people just because their parents didn't have (as far as you know) what you would think of (based on your, rather than their, cultural norms) as legitimate marriage. We've found it surprisingly common in...

I think the blank box is right... the child has a father about whom you know nothing, though I usually use the (badly named) 'one box per marriage' view so you just get a blank name under the mother. Occasionally of course one does know the father's name. There's been discussion elsewhere about brok...

On the Main tab in the properties dialogue, click on a blank Spouse tab (half way down) as if to add a second husband... then click in the first child space to add a child without adding a spouse. Then you can use the up/down arrows beside the spouse tabs to re-order them

For example... In occupations, I used to be able to type 'agr' and it filled in 'agricultural labourer' for me... wonderful! But I recently recorded an 'agricultural carman' who's occupation now comes up first every time I start with 'agr'. I either have to type (and spell correctly) 'agricultural l...

Jane, on my other request about the elaboration of the parents marital status in 'child of' clauses, you said '...On the name change might it be better to have a custom attribute to say she retained her maiden name. In my experience even now the large majority take the husbands name if they marry.' ...

Fair point Dave... however it's done it's only going to be a statistical probability, but still of some value I think. I hadn't spotted the wish list item... I think the degree of kinship figure is probably more useful than a percentage, but it that's not too important. The significant thing is it's...

Interesting article, thanks for pointing me to it... It comes to almost exactly the same figure for 'degree of kinship' as I did (except I forgot about the descendents of married cousins, not to mention identical twins, and the like which make it horribly complicated)

In narrative reports, where it says '...had the following children:'... It's very rare (unless the parents are alive) to know for certain that you have identified all their children. It might be nice if it (optionally?) said '...had the following known children:' unless the explicit count of childre...

The context I had in mind was this... In my descendants report each individual's paragraph is introduced by something like '1. You may be right Jane, but I'm a little nervous about custom attributes on grounds of portability, and the reason this arose from my other wish-list item was that I was suggesting that spouses could be identified as 'formerly...' which implies a formal (pardon the pun), rather than my personal, way ...

Narrative Ancestors Report, Redundant Generations
I guess the critera is simply, 'if there's nothing more to say', i.e. no other information in either of the individuals or the family record which would otherwise be included in the next generation of the report. Also if those parents have any other known children, then we would of course want the f...

Is this a new idea or has it already been described? Have you ever received an e-mail from someone and thought 'Who on earth are these people and why do I care what their grandparents were called? It already does it for source references (which are comparatively easy to find)... could we have a link from the '+n' beside children in descendent reports and the reverse 'n' beside children in ancestor reports to jump to the relevant paragraph.

Arising from (but not dependent on) my wish list item 'Narrative Reports, Elaboration of of clause', it would be nice to be able to record and identify a married name (possibly these days for either men or women), not just as any old alternative name, but specifically as the name relating to this ma...

Narrative Reports,Elaboration of lt;childgt; of
Producing narrative reports for relations who are not necessarily into genealogical conventions, we often seem to be suggesting that people's parents aren't married. If I was writing this by hand (so to speak) I might say something like 'John Smith son of William Smith(1810-1899) and his wife Mary n...
