Aprox date doesn't always mean approx year
Which all goes to prove you can't please all the people all the time... I guess the best compromise is another qualifier that means date uncertain but year probable... i.e. report as (for example) Jan 1876 (approx.), but not as (1876?-)

Where to go when you can't find it
In 1901 there's a Hannah Cox (27), dom. servant, born in Hackney, living in Hornsey. In 1891 she's mis-transcribed as Hannah Core (17), dom. servant, born in Hackney, living in Hornsey. I can't find her in 1881. But if you allow Hannah=Annie, there are 3 Cox girls born in Hackney, Letitia (11), Mary...

We have a similar case of Holwell, Bedfordshire/(later in) Hertfordshire. We record it like that if it's in Beds at the time, and just Holwell, Hertfordshire if it's in Herts (which is where it is now). At least that way you can find it on the map, and the first version records what the people thems...

You've got me curious... who was her husband and when did they marry? My guess is the name on her marriage is the adopted name if it was done formally. Where does the triplets story come from? At that time you wouldn't expect adopted children to be able to find out anything about their natural paren...

Sorry, not intended... We've often found that people missing from the indexes seem to have been miraculously added the second or third time we look. [confused]tonyt said:

Aprox date doesn't always mean approx year
I agree about the notes for the unusual cases, but what I was hoping for is that the record list and reports (where presumably something like the LifeDates function is used) could leave out the question mark if the date is marked as approximate but includes a month.

Aprox date doesn't always mean approx year
If I find an age in months (often on a census e.g. 7 months in 1861), I'll enter 'Sep 1860' as a birth date. It's still approx... could easily have been August, but if I check Approximate it shows the life dates as (1860?-), but the year is (almost) certain. Either with or without the (app) is misle...

Option to enter dates as (approx) by default
When entering birth dates from baptisms or censuses I have to click '...'/Approximate/OK every time.
An option to do this automatically unless I enter a day or month would save an awful lot of time. It's relativel easy to remove (app) in the few cases I don't want it.

Option for diagrams with no default printer
It would help to be able to define the printer (not necessarily the Windows default) to be used with a particular diagram style, and (more importantly) to be able to say none (i.e. use screen properties instead). This could be the default option if there is no default printer. The page boundary feat...

BMD Indexes on Ancestry etc
P.S.
(not that I have any particular reason to defend Ancestry as compared to any of the other sites, but to be fair...) Q3 1962 LAYTON, Hannah, 88, Wood Green 5f/395 is certainly there and correctly indexed

BMD Indexes on Ancestry etc
It's worth remembering that the BMD indexes were originally made by hand by copying all the quarterly registers (originally hand written by a registrar's clerk, from mostly verbal reports) onto seperate pages, sorting these (by hand) by name, and then copying these again onto the alphabetical lists....

Early Census Release Petition
Despite the fact that I'd love to see the early 20th century censuses, I rather hope (and believe) this petition will be ignored. When governments obtain information from citizens (that's you and me) on the assurance that it will only be used for statistical purposes for at least 100 years, we must ...

I should have added of course you can easily edit the data file for your own use with Excel or even Notepad (it's in folder ...Program FilesToponymy by default), but if you let me know I'll try to make sure your corrections get in any future release. If you rename your own version, you can go to Fil...

I do please... If they're mistakes in the parish data I'll tell Dave Bennett too. I have a handful of corrections already for places I happen to know about. When it seems worth it I'll do a new version. If anybody spots any where the map locations are wrong I'd like to know too. It's not always as s...

Personally I always do this kind of thing on the Events tab. Presumably what's on Detail is a fairly arbitrary set of events and attributes that the designers thought you'd be most likely to use, and it's constrained by space of course.

Nick, I had a look at Inno Setup and although it produces a neater result, it seems to require a lot more knowledge of how things should be done than I have. I thought it was safer to let the one that comes with Visual Studio 6 do whatever needs doing (naive it seems). Making sure I have the 'latest...

You're right of course, you should never let some downloaded freebie update your system files... if it asks, say no (if I was a hacker, it wouldn't ask). The program will probably work anyway. If it doesn't, I'm sorry, just throw it away. It was developed on XP and the setup program is built by the ...
