How many times removed?

My point about it being ambiguous is not that I can't understand it, but that there are at least 2 apparently authoritative but different answers. Unless you know which convention the writer subscribes to, you can't tell what 'twice removed' actually means.

Data Entry exit

Very few Windows apps use modeless data entry like the Property Box, as opposed to the pop-up, fill in, press Ok or Cancel style, in which Enter (or C/R) nearly always actions the Ok button. Apart from the exception of multi-line text entry, the Enter key has no natural meaning in this style, and F5...

Narrative Report to include Dates of Parents

And as an aside, abbreviated place names are reset at each new generation in the report, the implication being that it needs repeating. I would have thought people's dates could follow the same logic.

Narrative Report to include Dates of Parents

Yes, if it's descendants, but it may be some way back and would do no harm to repeat it. But not if it's ancestors.

Narrative Report to include Dates of Parents

If I do a narrative report, Ancestors by Generation from my grandfather, in First Generation it reads: '1. Samson BOWYER (known as 'Tass'), son of Samson BOWYER (1842-1898) and Ann Eliza EDWARDS (1841-1908), was born...', and in Second Generation: '2. Samson BOWYER, son of John BOWYER and Ann GITTIN...

Am I missing something? How do you add media to a citation as opposed to a source?

Jon's right that the seperate source for each entry is formally speaking 'better', but we use Patrick's method too. Duplicating the citations is not really a problem (you can always copy and paste, or type it once and auto-cite). The main disadvantage of the other approach is that your list of sourc...

Agree with you entirely... I didn't say it was trivial, it infuriates me too. But I can live with it. There are lots of things on the wish list that I have to go to much greater lengths to deal with, like editing every narrative report I produce for example. But we're never going to agree on priorit...

Paul White said: When i switch back to FH, focus goes to the diagram window It doesn't when I do it... either clicking it in the task bar or pressing Alt+Tab gets me back in the property box if that's where I left it (but not necessarily in the right place in the field). In the past I've always dismissed FH's usability problems as one of it's endearing little quirks, and tried to restrict my wish list requests (and votes) to things that I can't actually achieve any other way. Diagram Window Refresh

I was a bit appalled to discover from this thread that FH sometimes (yes really, sometimes, not always) refreshes the diagram when I switch applications. We've talked before about the same sort of problem with focus in the property box. IMHO this sort of behaviour should be illegal. That of course i...

(and there was me thinking I was getting to be the GOM of this site, second only to Jon of course)... I think the only way to do this usefully is to have a Custom Export feature. I regularly export for Ancestry, Genes Reunited and Tribal Pages, and have to keep notes of which query to use and what f...

Reports- Fonts

What I do is, having changed the options for a report, save it as a custom report type and use that in future.

Not quite what you asked for, but it works for me. Perhaps someone else has a better answer.

Multimedia for PLACES

The problem is that FH doesn't recognise places a objects in the data model, so failing a major new version, you can't really do anything like this in any natural way. You could (somewhat unnaturally) create a source record called 'Pictures of Highoredish Farm' and link that to all references to it....

Sources

I think what you're looking for is Record Links on the View menu. You have to select your source record first. It's rather well hidden, and a bit clumsy, and I can't see any way of getting to which event (for example) it's linked to without browsing by eye. Perhaps someone else has a better way of d...

Conventional Word Selection in Text Boxes

Fair enough... that means it has to be a configurable option somewhere (but I would still argue that the conventional effect of double clicking in text should be the default). But it's almost the same operation... If you move the mouse to the right hand end of one of these boxes and double click (ac...

I couldn't agree more with Adrian. I too changed my text scheme years ago to read '... at in '. It may not be what the standard implies, but hey, it does what I want. Unlike the Gedcom standard, Toponymy understands that place names change over time. It lists addresses (as well as identifying distri...

Not worth a wish list request in its own right, but while looking at what happens when space is restricted, and given that it abreviates names to initials, it would be helpful to also abbreviate the dates to years.

Conventional Word Selection in Text Boxes

Double-clicking in a text box usually selects the word you clicked on, except in the FH property box where there is an extended entry box to pop-up (e.g. dates, places, etc). The double-click mouse shortcut is unnecessary since the button is available immediately beside the text, and for keyboard us...

General consideration of the effect of name change

As you say Jan, the problems are not insurmountable. There really is no issue with the GedCom standard... The information needed for most cases is already there... It may need the odd custom extension to record exceptions or text templates, but that's not new to FH. My point really is that, where th...
