There are no rules, only conventions. You can do whatever you think best represents what you know of her. I would normally record the birth with the name it was registered (or baptised) as child of the mother and father unknown. Then the step-father's surname (if used) as an alternative name. Who sh...

The issue here is whether you interpret the Gedcom standard as prohibiting single-sex marriages. There are two schools of thought it seems, and I'm not an expert, but bear in mind the standard is defined by the LDS Church, so it's more an emotional than a technical problem. My feeling is that FH wil...

The first thing I noticed after upgrading AVG to version 8 is that browsing's noticably slower unless you switch off the link scanner (and that's on broadband). Irritating though that it then continuously appears to be in an error state, so you have to open it to see if it's otherwise working ok.

I think it's just a flourish in the handwriting, he's done similar elsewhere but not necessarily at the start and end of a name so you wouldn't assume they're parentheses.

Buried at Woking St John the baptist:
24 Nov 1857, Esther Cooke, aged 74
11 Feb 1859, William Cook, aged 56
Could be them... the ages seem a bit out, but if I recall they varied rather on the censuses too, and she certainly seemed somewhat older than him.

They're at Sheets just S/W of Knaphill, Sheets Heath on modern maps, and in 1841 they're William & Esther Cook with son John. As I read it in 1851 Hester is born in Compton, John in Ditton and Thomas in Rotherhithe.

Tree printing
Most printers won't actually print at the extreme edges. You need to look at the printer properties to see if the margins are adjustable, either in Control Panel, or in the FH menu, File > Print Setup > Properties... After that it depends on your particular printer.

Enumerators do help........Sometimes
There are maps of civil parish boundaries at http://www.visionofbritain.org.uk, which are often used by the enumerators to describe the area they covered. Failing that, it's sometimes helpful to look at the description of surrounding areas to see how they described it too.

Toponymy Version 2.3
I'm thinking of making a new release of Toponymy. There's not a great deal changed as far as useage is concerned (I'm always open to sugestions), but I've done a lot of work on the data content (alternative names, locations, identifying obscure civil parishes, and so on). So, if anyone has any corre...

(And btw... as an amateur genealogist, I'm sure we're all used to our names being mis-spelt, unless it's Smith of course)

Copyright
You're right of course, encyclopedias (and any other reference works) are full of facts, and they are copyright. The point is (I believe) that they can't stop you re-publishing the facts themselves, as distinct from the text that contains them.

My legal advice is among other things, that 'it is well-established that copyright cannot inhere in facts themselves', as opposed to copying documents containing facts which is a different matter, but this is disputed by some GENUKI contributors for example, who claim copyright on their information ...

International character sets available?
Modern computers support character sets of more than 255 characters, but many programs, including FH, store text as one byte per character, so you can only use anything up to and including ÿ, i.e. Alt+0255 from character map. ö can be keyed as Alt+0246 i.e. with numlock on, hold down the Alt key and...

Display of substaniated vs. unsubstantiated info
In diagrams you can colour text and boxes according to record flags (see diagram options) but of course that depends on having a convention (and sticking to it) for adding flags to substantiated (or unsubstantiated) records (and always knowing what you mean by substantiated). In the record list you ...
