1911 Census

Nick Walker said: A nice trick I found last night Nice one Nick... Great for unusual names, and has the advantage of making you feel good about getting one back on the profiteers. But I do agree with everyone else who said the present arrangements are next to useless for the hard-to-find individual...

Just click the 'Buy Credits' link and it gives you a choice of how many and the prices. You can always press Back if you don't really want any.

1911 Census

In defence of the transcribers, they're working from the householder's form, so the handwriting changes every page, and of course, unlike the enumerators, the householder wasn't necessarily very used to filling in official forms. I think we should expect a significantly higher rate of transcription ...

And as an afterthought, if 'X' in 'my next X years' in your first post is greater than 2, it's a fair bet there will be another fashionable 'standard' to argue about.

I think this argument's getting muddled. It's not about whether you should record sources, but whether you should record them in some particular way. To the former, yes of course, and it would be nice if FH encouraged this more from the start. My personal objective is never to enter anything without...

Narrative reports Carriage return

Fair enough... I guess it all goes to prove that we all use this software in different ways for different reasons. I would never have dreamt of trying to produce a document about one individual on that scale by this sort of method. For me, the important thing is to get the facts right, and I've rais...

IGI record - some advice?

It depends where they are recorded in the parish registers. They haven't usually transcribed burial registers, but infant deaths are often recorded with the baptisms. There are also 'submitted' entries of course, if someone in the church believes this to be their ancestor. When I said I couldn't fin...

Seems to me if you want to be fussy about layout, open it in your word processor and fiddle about with it. Any rule for inserting paragraph breaks is unlikely to work perfectly for everyone in the report anyway. It is after all meant to be narrative (i.e. in sentences and paragraphs) not formal like...

IGI record - some advice?

I thought at first one might be a mistake in a transcribed copy of the parish register (Bishop's transcripts and the like) but both appear to be from the same source. They look like one family to me (7 baptisms between 1685 and 1707 in Bennington), although Gulielmi being a Latinised form of William...

It's not a big issue, but I still think the list of 'commonly used formats' is subjective, and potentially enormous. Including any in particular seems to imply some sort of support for for the format, which is not the case. I would prefer just *.*, or those file types that are registered on my syste...

The whole point of the IGI is that they have an idea about Heaven that you’re more likely to get in if you have relations there (a bit like school catchment areas) and consequently have spent a fortune over the years gathering genealogical information that is now available free to us all. You may no...

Same sex marriages

I was tempted to add 'see previous posts on this subject' but on second thoughts, perhaps the more often it's raised the more likely it is that FH will eventually relax its interpretation of the Gedcom standard in this respect. It's gotta be changed eventually surely.

Narrative reports are really all about generating text from the events and attributes recorded for an individual. The only way I can think of to add your own stories is to use notes, but you are limited to plain text. The pictures would have to be added seperately on the Objects tab of the individua...

Tracing Family tree without certificates

I've often found a useful way to boost your confidence that you've got the right line is to see if you can find out what happened to the other people of similar name in the area. Seems like a waste of time, but can be invaluable. I've even once bought a certificate for someone who I think is not my ...

diagram update on record modification

There are lots of things that don't update the diagram automatically. I've got in the habit of doing Refresh on the Window menu when updating the properties while viewing a diagram. It's irritating to have to do this, but at least it works.

I'm not sure what's possible; I remember spending a lot of time fiddling about with the text scheme to get it the way I liked it, and haven't touched it since. But even if you can, it doesn't seem to me to make much sense under Samson (in the example above) to have 2 marriage dates and places withou...

We do it the other way round, so the marriage date and place appear only in the spouse box... Seems to me this is necessary in the case of multiple marriages. For example a bit of my tree looks like this...

I think you're right, just record the marriages in the normal way as they occurred... probably deserves a note to explain though.

Saving family trees in narratives

You can save narrative reports in RTF format, which is recognised by Word. Ancestors by generation with the option for the number of generations should do what you want. And of course you can save diagrams as JPG, which can be pasted into a document.

Jane's right... I'm not sure what problem you're trying to solve by not recording your people as people (so to speak), but whatever it is, I'm sure it would be better addressed by using flags or something to distinguish ancestors from the rest.

Sorry a bit off topic, but re: disabling the link scanner in AVG8, I also discovered yesterday why Internet Explorer intermittently starts and immediately closes again when started from Favourites on the Windows Start menu. To cure this, go into IE, Tools > Manage Add-ons > Enable or Disable Add-ons...
