Help With Latin Translation
Thank you both for your efforts.
I understand the motto is from an unknown marine engineering college.
ARTIFICUM NATRUMQUE NUTRIX was scribbled on a scrap piece of paper amongst a friend's relative's effects.

Help With Latin Translation
I wonder if any Latin readers can help with the following phrase or motto, which I think may be military-related: ARTIFICUM NATRUMQUE NUTRIX I know 'nutrix' is a 'nurse or wet nurse'; 'artificum' is 'craft guild or work done by a craftsman' and 'que' at the end of word I believe is 'and' but 'natrum...

The irregular use of the possessive, commonly called 'greengrocer's apostrophe' drives me mad! Reading the national press over the past year or so there are plenty of examples of authorities up and down the country resigning streets and roads and omitting the apostorphe for no good reason, e.g. St P...

Like Jerry I omit the comma: therefore for me it's '8 Smith St'. However, I have had to be careful with church names. In correspondence from relatives mention has been made by more than one person to 'St Mary's'. In their area there are two 'St Mary's': 'St Mary's Church' and 'St Mary the Virgin Chu...

Thank you TimTreeby for the response and especially for the attachment for Peter, Ann and Richard. I now feel I can push on with my researches into my paternal side, however this will involve going beyond the 1837 registrations - something I am unfamiliar with. Delving into parish registers is somet...

Points well made, both. Until I contacted my sister today, I didn't know she had sent for and received the 1849 Peter Atherton (Collier) birth cert. Certainly if I'd known about it I would have considered it a probable match along your lines of thought... she's had it since 2009! Grrr... One thing I...

I don't want to take up anymore of your valuable time with this, Nick, and I thank you for your efforts. However, today I've spoken with my sister, who tells me she has a birth cert for a Peter Atherton that she'd discounted as being wrong as she can't find a marriage with the mother's maiden name: ...

Thank you so much, Nick, for the speedy response: it is much appreciated. I have previously seen the Platt Lane census connections, but hadn't found the baptism of 4 Feb 1849, so this is another lead. Unless I have missed something the problem with an 'Atherton/Elizabeth Collier' marriage is that I ...

May I be allowed to make an appeal for help, please? Im searching for my x2 great grandfather William Atherton and wife, Elizabeth. Despite a two-year trawl I have yet to find anything definite. I have his sons marriage (25 August 1874, Wigan, Lancs) - Peter Atherton (born 1849 Wigan, Lancs) to An...

Recently I merged two Projects using v4. Today I installed v5. My shiny new box of FH v5 arrived today... a brilliant one day delivery from My History using this site's Amazon link! I will be installing it over a full version of FH v4, and would like to retain all of my custom settings and preferences, e.g. fonts, colours, report layouts etc etc. Could some kin...

Merging Project Files - FH v4
Just a quick post: two projects merged and name-changed successfully... though I have missed a couple of duplicate images - so quick tidy up tomorrow and the job is done.
Very many thanks for your help and assistance putting me on the correct path, Tatewise.

Merging Project Files - FH v4
I went for a cycle ride this afternoon (and got soaked!) to clear my head and try and think through the problem. I came to the somwhat befuddled conclusion that maybe all I am copying are the record files and somehow not the whole project including its media. Thank you, Tatewise, for your email poin...

Merging Project Files - FH v4
I feel as though I am going to have to admit defeat with this! Four times I have copied the projects, validated them, used the merge feature to carefully check every tab and duplicate record etc, discarding those struck through, and then merging the two projects. Every time the then merged project s...

Merging Project Files - FH v4
Thank you, Tatewise, for the prompt response. Yes, I did check all of the tabs, but obviuosly I'm missing something. None of the face links on the two original projects are missing: all of the media links show properly, and the files were verified before I started the merge process. All of the media...

Merging Project Files - FH v4
I gave my researches a rest for a year and am now back into using FH, and for the first time need to merge two Projects. I've read the Merge Compare Files from the FHKB, and have copied and renamed the two Projects, let's call them 'Smith Copy' and 'Jones Copy' leaving the originals unchanged. Tenta...

Any advice re War Office Records?
Thank you for this information, Berni. My late father always said he missed the first convoy out from Liverpool due to illness and 'vaccine fever', saying he heard that the first convoy was attacked by waiting U-boats in the Atlantic, sinking a number of vessels. I have no idea whether this is true....

Any advice re War Office Records?
In 2009 I received my late father's WWII RAF service records within three weeks of official application. I beleive the cost was around £30 - not an inconsiderable sum, but I'm glad I applied. The copies (in colour) are really high quality and printed on substantial art paper at 100 per cent enlargem...

I don't often feel the need to reply or comment on posts, but I do regularly read them and keep up to date with the FH community on FHUG. Frankly I am stunned by geopet544's 'rant' in relation to Jane and her reply to his post, and I add my support in recognising her 'above and beyond the call of du...

Great software as it, maybe a bit ambitious to think FH will still be going in 100 years time!
