Well, I copied the FH zip file to my C drive and then tried the Restore command again and everything worked fine. My FH project is now fully restored.
I have no idea why FH will not Restore from the external D drive - that is the way I have done it in the past with WIN7.
Any thoughts?

Re: Installing FH on New Win10 Computer
Well, I just selected my external D drive and scrolled down to the FH zip folder. Clicked the FH zip file and got what you see in the screen shot. No, I have not zipped one inside another. Those zip files were created by FH Full Backup. I looked inside the zip folder and all the FH data files & fold...

Re: Installing FH on New Win10 Computer
Mike, that zip folder in the left hand pane was created by FH as part of a full backup. I thought the Restore operation was supposed to unzip that folder. Yes, it has been 3 years since I did a Restore, but I thought you just selected the backup zip folder and FH took it from there. Obviously I have...

Re: Installing FH on New Win10 Computer
Will not continue to run FH on the old PC. Don't use AS. However, the Restore command will not work in my efforts to get the backup file loaded into the new computer When I select Restore Backup and navigate to the zipped backup file on my external drive, then select the zipped file, I get a message...

Re: Installing FH on New Win10 Computer
Lorna, Yes I have the original download links. I will just uninstall v5 and start over. Regarding loss of Place records - I was not going to Restore my Project backup file until I had FH up and running on V6. So no problem there. Once V6 and my backup project file are in place, I will run the Settin...

Re: Installing FH on New Win10 Computer
Lorna, Yes I have the V5 to V6 download link printed out ( upgrade fh5 to 6.0.0 dl.exe ) But that link does not take me to FH. This is confusing. Are we to use the original V5 purchase download link or the V6 upgrade link? Since I already have V5 working, it would seem the V6 upgrade download link w...

Installing FH on New Win10 Computer
Just got a new computer with Win10. Downloaded the trail version of FH to the new machine- went fine. Then I tried to activate the trial version by entering my FH license info. Got out my printed copies of my FH license/purchase receipts. 1. Entered my License Name and Registration Key from my origi...

Re: Rules for Names Appearing in ISR Index
Interesting. I did not realize that FH was smart enough to be searching the parents, children, and spouse fields on each Individual Record to include those additional names in the ISR Index. I had assumed that it would limit the Index names to only the Individual Record names for each person in the ...

Rules for Names Appearing in ISR Index
I just generated an "ISR with Index" report from a Named List . My parent's records are not in the Named List , yet their names appear in the Index. My record is in the Named List . Each of my parent's names are referenced to the page number associated with the first page that I appear on in the ISR...

Re: Images of Residences
I keep my workflow pretty simple. When I want to add a photo of a particular location, residence, school, church, cemetery, etc., I just add a Source record for the Fact that references such a location, and then attach a media file to that Source record. As an example, I have a attached a segment of...

Re: Everyone v All Relatives chart
Paul, I generate All Relatives diagrams quite frequently for family members. The steps I follow are: 1. Select the person in the Focus window that you are going to generate the diagram for. Right click their Focus window box and set them as the Root person. 2. Go to the menu strip at the top of the ...

Re: Comparing trees without merging them
Or is it a case of slogging through 100 individuals one by one? (Via merge without merging or some other approach) Probably something very similar to what you suggest, if you really want to dive into details. Perhaps open FH twice, in two separate windows on a split screen. Open your tree in one wi...

Re: Face image pixelation
Someone else will most likely provide a more exact answer to your question on optimum image file size. Are you working with a jpeg file format? I have jpeg files in my FH Media folder that are as large as 21 MB. Files that large do not seem to cause any issues with FH at all. I have no pixelation is...

Re: How to send info to relatives
You can create a copy of your family tree diagram as a pdf file. You can also generate a pdf report using any of the report formats listed under the Publish tab. I do this all the time for numerous relatives. I have 2,254 relatives in my FH tree. I use the Family Historian PDF printer that is availa...

Re: Change Focus window to that shown in property box
I agree with Evelyn on this one. I always keep the Focus window and Property box in-sync for the same person. Otherwise, there is too much of a risk of inadvertently entering data in the Property box for the wrong person. I think I got caught in that trap early on in my FH experience.

Language for Map Display
Perhaps there is some simple option I have not found to control the written language that appears on the FH Map display. I have attached a screenshot that shows a portion of China with all the town/city name locations written in Chinese. Is there a way to force the FH map display to show all locatio...

Wow, I'm impressed Jane! Thank you very much for setting that up. Very easy to run and it brought up exactly what I was looking for, plus a few more bonus bits of information. Custom Query Linking Places to Individuals
Before I spend a day or more trying to figure this out, I thought I should first inquire from the experienced Query writers if what I want to do is even possible. I have extremely limited Query experience. My daughter and her family are going to Europe in 3 months and she asked me if we had any ance...

Re: Change map locator symbol
With the cursor outside the map pane, the mouse scroll wheel should not zoom the map at all. When you do that does the slider move up & down in sync with the mouse scroll wheel? Mike, when I have the mouse cursor outside the map pane, and use the scroll wheel to zoom the map, the slider does move u...

Re: Change map locator symbol
Bob, after using the slider, where is your mouse cursor? Is it centred on the cross-hair? If so, then yes the mouse wheel will zoom and maintain the original location, but move the mouse cursor and the mouse wheel zoom will reposition the map. Mike, After I make the initial zoom adjustment with the...

Re: Change map locator symbol
That is strange Bill. Yes, my cross-hair always stays in the center of the Map display window, regardless of whether I use the slider bar or mouse wheel to do the initial zoom. However, in the case where I use the mouse wheel for the initial zoom, the cross-hair remains in the middle of the display ...

Re: Change map locator symbol
Doesn't seem to be a coincidence. I just opened FH again, opened the Map window and typed a location in the Search box. The Map window went right to the correct location and centered the cross-hair right on the spot. I then moved the slider bar up & down and the cross hair stayed in the correct posi...

Re: Change map locator symbol
I was using the mouse scroll wheel. Your are right, when using the slider bar, the cross-hair stays fixed to the correct map position. However, I also noticed that if I use the slider bar as the initial zoom activator, then subsequent zooming with the mouse scroll wheel works the same as the slider ...

Re: Change map locator symbol
I haven't used the Map Search feature before. But I just tried it to see what you were talking about and I also noticed that as you zoom in & out on the map that the cross-hair does not stay fixed on the search location, i.e., it just stays in the center of the map screen. I would have expected it t...
