Re: Map Life Facts plugin with Bing Maps support
I've tested it out and GEOapify is actually quite good. (I've also tried reverse geocoding to see if I got y original location). The nice thing about the result set is that it tells one what it found as a match and provides a match metric for each. I did see your previous posting. I guess I have ne...

Re: Map Life Facts plugin with Bing Maps support
This is just a curiosity question.
I find that Google Maps does a very good job of geocoding. Does anyone have experience with Geoapify? How does their accuracy compare to Google Maps?

Re: Map Life Facts plugin with Bing Maps support
I am hardwired to my router. It started happening very occasionally about two months ago. I haven't changed anything other than Windows updates. Interestingly it never happens in the plugin with Leaflet Maps and never happened when there was the Google Maps option. I wonder why Bing maps seems to ha...

Re: Map Life Facts plugin with Bing Maps support
Mike, No, I just have this one. I did just try to go to the first website you listed earlier and got this error. image7.jpg Clicking on reload resulted in the web site showing without an error. Now that I think about it I have been getting this error on other websites occasionally when I'm in my bro...

Re: Map Life Facts plugin with Bing Maps support
15 minutes later it seemed to be working fine with the sample project. I was no longer getting the script error or the Map Action Sync Failed message and the map was displaying.
Now however I am getting the Map Action Sync Failed error and no map.

Re: Map Life Facts plugin with Bing Maps support
Mike,
Those two websites work as you describe in Chrome and Firefox.
Using the sample project, I get the following when I try to switch from Leaflet Maps to Bing Maps for the Plugin Map Pane and I also get the Map Action Sync Failed message.

Re: Map Life Facts plugin with Bing Maps support
Mike, Just to let you know. I had clicked on "No" when I got the last script error and closed the plugin. I just tried again and go the same script error. I clicked on "Yes" and then the Status changed to OK and the map appeared. It seems to be working fine (at least for now). Edit: 15 minutes later...

Re: Map Life Facts plugin with Bing Maps support
Mike, Well... a little different with this version. I ran the plugin with Plugin Map Pane still set to Leaflet Maps. Then I switched the setting to Bing Maps and I got the Map Action Sync Failed error and no map appeared. I did not get a script error as I did in the last version. I closed the plugin...

Re: Location and Security of Media Files
Neither was I just talking of family tree, but that was what we were talking about. As for not keeping backups on your PC, Why? You would have 2 copies of your tree on your PC and have them set to "Always Keep on This Device" and then they will automatically be on your PC and your OneDrive. No sepa...

Re: Location and Security of Media Files
Bill If you read my reply, OneDrive is enough. You have your original and your backup on your PC, then they are both backed up to OneDrive, so you have 4 copies of your file (2 linked) and probably a few more backups as FH don't overwrite your backups and they will be backed up to OneDrive. Surely ...

At the moment I have set the plugin back to Leaflet maps. I can test Bing again when you come out with an updated version.

Re: Map Life Facts plugin with Bing Maps support
Mike, I closed the plugin and reopened it and got the same error. I tried this a couple time and then it seemed to work fine. I was able to set the option to Bing Maps and all worked well. I tried plotting a couple places on the Bing map that were were already geocoded. That seemed to work fine and ...

Re: Map Life Facts plugin with Bing Maps support
If either API Key is not entered then the associated Google Maps or Bing Maps options will not be accepted. When the plugin is first run by a new user a popup message explains about entering those API Keys . Mike, I plan to keep geocoding using Google maps. If I only want to use Bing maps to displa...

Re: Location and Security of Media Files
Bill - I was just describing what works for me and correcting your assertion that OneDrive cannot recover accidental deletions. Your requirements may differ, and you have your solution. Let’s not dilute the core message to readers - a file not backed up is a file you are happy to do without. Mark, ...

Re: Location and Security of Media Files
Bill, OneDrive has a recycle bin, so accidental deletions can be recovered. It also keeps previous file versions (a bit like FH snapshots on steroids). It's my modern equivalent of the USB hard desk in my office locker when I was a wage slave - I don't bother with a physical copy offsite these days...

Re: Location and Security of Media Files
What I learned was a 3-2-1 backup strategy. Three copies on at least two media types with at least 1 copy offsite. That has always been sufficient for me when I've had to recover. Again, I wouldn't consider One Drive a backup location as a copy there would be deleted if you delete the copy on your c...

Re: Location and Security of Media Files
David, See https://www.family-historian.co.uk/help/fh7/hh_start.htm#backups.html for an explanation of the backup options available in FH. The Full backup is the only one that backs up the Media folder in the project. Everything will also be backed up in any strategy you use to back up your hard dri...

Re: Use of <whole record> and Name source citations
Gary,
I never said you did (notice that I didn't quote what you had said). I was just agreeing with Helen's comment about having multiple citations for things. For me I do that for everything I enter into FH (facts, names, etc.).

Re: Use of <whole record> and Name source citations
Don't we want multiple citations for the same assertion? If we only have a single source for an assertion, then that weakens the case that it's correct. I'll even cite conflicting sources (with a note to explain how I've resolved the conflict) rather than not cite a source that contains information...
