Edit/Repeat and Ability to minimize property box

Jane said: Why not just set the property box to default to closed when you switch to the record window or any other window where you don't want it open by default. Because I don't WANT it closed! [smile] I'd just like to be able to see behind it, maybe to remind myself of some date or event in anot...

Edit/Repeat and Ability to minimize property box

I'd like not so much to minimise it as to be able to 'hide' one window behind the other by clicking on the inactive window or the taskbar. This is an instinctive action - I attempt to do this every time I use FH, and get pulled up by having to close the property box before I can see the Records Wind...

Newbie = and struggling

Nick Walker said: That's a very nice thing to say. Would you like a job as my publicist? I'm very happy to blow the trumpet for Gedcom Census whenever I can, Nick!  Seriously, I can't imagine using FH without it (no, actually I can imagine it, because I did it at first, and look back in horror and ...

Newbie = and struggling

Go to the Downloads page, select Gedcom, and GedCom Census v6.0.6 is top of the list. It really is the most wonderful piece of free (!!) software for recording census data in FH.  It will save you hours of data entry time, automagically linking the source to all the people mentioned on the list.  Yo...

entering extensive census data, ship manifests

I simply add extraneous information to the bottom of the source report produced by Gedcom Census. So, having entered names, used Autotext and tidied up the entries to reflect what is recorded in the original, I add a couple more lines to show years married, number of children born/died, nationality ...

Lest We Forget

I'd like to remember my second cousin twice removed, Private Robert Major Harenburg, who died at Mansell Copse on the Somme on 1st July 1916, barely 17 years old. I can't help wondering how this country boy stood up to teasing about his German name. His grandmother Mary Ann Bell Major, a servant fro...

birth and baptism

If I have a baptism date, I record birth date as 'bef' (before) baptism date. So a baptism date of 21 Sep 1829 would give me a birth date of bef 21 Sep 1829. The program then assumes birth at that time, which covers the majority of cases. I use the same system for death when I only have a burial dat...

Small Hiccup with Gedcom Census

Simon, No, I don't think I did any work in FH, just opened it up alongside GC with the intention of entering census data, and I certainly didn't do a manual save. So does the fact that GC has changed the gedcom not trigger an Autosave? I'm afraid I assumed that Autosave would save automatically ever...

Small Hiccup with Gedcom Census

Many thanks for your offer of help, Nick.   I'll send you the file. Just to clarify the position further, I do have dozens of gedcom files, because I'm doing a One Name Study.  These are all carefully named and numbered to distinguish them, and most are filed in sub-folders so they don't display imm...

Small Hiccup with Gedcom Census

Thanks for getting back to me on this. I do have Autosave enabled, every 2 minutes. I am positive I did not go back to FH during the time I was entering data, as that would have triggered the Update message on FH. The file path on the log is identical with the path to the file I had open, both befor...

Small Hiccup with Gedcom Census

Gedcom Census hiccuped this morning and the data I had entered appears to have been lost from the gedcom, although it is recorded in the census log. I had both FH and GC open, and had entered family details from 1841, 1851 and 1861 and saved as usual, being prompted to add a birth event for an indiv...

Navy Record help please

Yes, rating is to crew as rank is to officers. At a guess I'd say Acting Engine Room Artificer 4th class, but I may be completely wrong!   The second ship is HMS Tenedos.  See   http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Ganges_(1821)   which says: 'HMS Ganges was an 84-gun second-rate ship of the line of the...

What other software do you use for Family History?

I tried GEDEXLATE and found it apparently very good except where the individual has an alternative name.  In these cases, the full name is ignored and the alternative name (given or surname) is placed in the given name column and the surname column is left blank.  With obvious shortcomings like that...

Problem opening photos sent by email

Do you know what format the files are in?  That is, is there a file extension (something like .jpg or .gif) after the file name?  Knowing that would help to find the correct program. Try right-clicking on the file and selecting 'Open With' and that should show you a list of appropriate programs.  If...

Mapping genealogical data

Google Maps has a brilliant 'My Maps' option where you can create and save maps of locations worldwide, add markers and notes, and view in map view, satellite view or combine the two in a hybrid view. Obviously these are present day maps rather than historical ones.

Tools for analysing gedcom files

You may be interested in a program I've been trying recently, Behold, from http://www.lkessler.com/behold/  This is so new it's only in Alpha version, but already I like it enormously.  It's free of course, at the moment, and very simple to use.   It displays the data from gedcom files as a report w...

Sibling events

I like the narrative report as an easily understandable way to explain the family tree (especially their own ancestors) to elderly relatives, and younger ones with no experience of genealogy.  It also helps me keep the ancestors straight in my mind!  If there was a narrative report which produced 'A...

I'm not sure what you mean by this, Jane - could you explain in more detail please?  I created these custom events because I felt that they are significant life events for an individual that I'd like to see in a report.  I'm still only scratching the surface of what is possible with FH, so if there ...

I have created individual custom events for 'Death of father', 'Death of mother' and 'Death of sibling'.  Is there any way to automatically apply these events to all living siblings without having to trek through pane after pane in large families?

Twins?

Thank you so much for the detailed explanation. It works! I have several sets of twins, including one set born in 1844 called Elizabeth and Eliza. Obviously the shock of twins paralysed the imaginations of their parents. For some time I thought it must be a duplicate recording of a single birth unti...

Gay / lesbian relationships

How can I record a lesbian relationship in a family tree?  Even unmarried partners are forced to be of opposite sexes.  I realise that there is as yet very little legal standing for same-sex relationships in the United Kingdom, but that could change very soon and already has in other countries.  The...

I'm a very new user, but I've been working through the tutorial and building my own family tree at the same time.  (I love the program, by the way, and I'm very impressed by the detail in the manual and the online support.) I am wondering if there is any way to indicate twins (or other multiple birt...
