Property Box problems
As I've no idea what 'sandboxing type software' is, I feel pretty safe saying I have none! Anyway, I think you were right about the write protection thing - somehow all the FH folders and files were marked as read-only. Doesn't explain why the main tab should be blank, but fingers crossed that it's ...

Property Box problems
I run FH on a desktop (WinXP) and a laptop (Win7). Gedcoms and/or projects (but not settings) are synced via Sugarsync - no problem there, data entry is only done on the desktop. But since installing Version 5 (full installation on both machines) I have a very frustrating problem with the property...

Sources
tatewise said: There are two primary schools of thought about how to organise sources. Whichever method you adopt, it is best to use it for all Sources - don't mix and match. Does it really matter if you mix and match? I normally use Method 1: a separate Source Record for each documented event and...

Event order
Thank you, Jane and tatewise, for explaining how FH orders things. I can understand that death wouldn't necessarily be the final event in an individual record (allowing for burial, probate etc) but I had assumed that childbirth would automatically precede a death event. They are very remote relative...

Event order
I have a problem with the ordering of events in the Property Box. A relative, having given birth to no less than 10 singleton children between 1839 and 1852 (and buried 4 of them), finally gave birth to boy/girl twins in Q2 1854 and promptly died (of sheer exhaustion probably!). The twins also die...

Tracking BMD and Census Records
I do it the same way, and don't find it at all cumbersome. I use white icons for E&W censuses, red for Canadian and blue for US. I do think it's important to distinguish them, especially as the US ones were in different years. You might find relatives in the US in 1900 and back home in the UK in 190...

Age not calculated under Julian dates?
Many thanks Gerry and Nick for your advice. Apologies for the late response; I've been out of action for a bit. I'll obviously have to reconsider how to work with the Julian dates now I'm getting more of them. However it still seems inconsistent to me that the age field is present for precise Julian...

Age not calculated under Julian dates?
Sorry, I don't see why the formula [J] 23 Oct 1702 shouldn't be recognised as a date when that is what FH itself produces when I use the Date Entry Assistant. I like to have the reminder that all dates before 1752 are Julian, not just the odd bit between January and March. The calendar affects every...

Age not calculated under Julian dates?
I'm using FH version 4.1.3, and I've been doing some 'housekeeping' to tidy up my records. On the Facts tab of the Property Box, I marked some dates as falling under the Julian Calendar, ie before 1753. As I did this, I noticed that all the known or calculated ages for these events disappeared. Is t...

Trying to build my first Event/Attribute
I'd echo Jon's advice about keeping it simple. I started off by creating custom events for every occasion, and the list got longer and longer and ever more arcane, because nobody ever has quite the same experience twice. Eventually I scrapped the lot and created one custom event (called 'Event') and...

Narrative reports
As Jon suggested, computers don't write books. Books require a lot of editing before they are readable and so will your FH report. Save it in Rich Text Format (.rtf) and open it with a word processing program. Then you can play with format, wording, images etc until you have your masterpiece! [sm...

Oh, I'm not complaining, Nick! AS is an absolutely brilliant app, and I can live with a tiny cosmetic detail. It worried me when I first noticed it, but it doesn't obscure the whole box or affect input in any way. Please concentrate on the engine - and take time for yourself and your family too! Mau...

I have the identical issue with DPI set to 120 on a screen resolution of 1280x768. Changing the size of the window does not affect the overlap.

pdf files are not image files, so you couldn't just convert jpeg to pdf by 'saving as'. If I wanted to do that, I'd paste my jpeg into a Word document, then 'print' the document as a pdf, discarding the Word document afterwards. There may be other solutions!

Can't read 'Getting Started'!
Problem solved! I downloaded the file again and had the same problem, and then downloaded a third time and changed the destination. It was (probably) a case of a too-long file path - I'd installed it in a sub-folder. Many thanks to Peter and Nick for offering support.

Can't read 'Getting Started'!
Firstly, many, many thanks to Nick for making Ancestral Sources freely available to us, and to Jane for giving us a Forum. I'm sure AS will even further enhance the attractions of Family Historian and I've been holding off entering censuses recently in anticipation. But I've hit a problem already! D...

Editing Narrative Reports
Simply save the report as a word-processor document (RTF) or a text file, and then open it in your preferred word-processing program to do all the editing you like.

Saving a colour scheme.
Why not just save whatever gedcom you want to use under a different name, set it up with whatever schemes look best projected on a wall, then scrap it once your talk is over? Your original will not be harmed in any way [grin]!

Weird Problem with FH and Dropbox
Thank you very much! It will be a slow process with so many files, but as well as improving the length of file names it means I get to examine the image again and reconsider the information therein. It never hurts to re-examine evidence!

Weird Problem with FH and Dropbox
Having exposed my complete ignorance of image handling above, I went away and experimented on a couple of images. I right-clicked and selected properties, and on the Summary tab I was able to enter the citation and other information. Then I changed the file name, and found I was able to see the cita...

Weird Problem with FH and Dropbox
Thank you for the suggestion, Jane, but I'm afraid I don't know what IPCT title fields are. I use Win XP, with access to Vista. Otherwise I have Paint Shop Power Suite, also use Irfanview and have access to Photoshop Elements. Are these fields visible to anyone who views the image - when it's in an ...

Weird Problem with FH and Dropbox
I have a particular problem with file names for images. As I'm doing a One Name Study as well as my own family history, I make full use of newspaper indexing sites and download many images from them. Sometimes it's a full page, with newspaper title and date at the top. More often, all I can get is t...

Weird Problem with FH and Dropbox
Many, many thanks, Peter! I took the folders out of Dropbox, shortened the folder names and adjusted the fh_proj, fh_data and gedcom file names to match, placed the folders back in Dropbox and everything works! So simple when you know how. Wishing you (and everyone here at FHUG, especially Jane) Sea...

Weird Problem with FH and Dropbox
After seeing recommendations in FHUG for Dropbox to synchronise files across several computers, I tried it out. I had the free 2Gb account at first, but quickly realised how useful it would be and signed up for an enhanced account. So far so good, but I've run into a really weird problem with my F...
