IGI record - some advice?
It could be as you say the first entry refers to a child who died and the second to a living child named after the first.I have found this in my research a few times but have not found burial records for the first child. In some instances the same name is used up to 4 times before being given to a ch...

birth and baptism
I always put the baptism year as the birth year and then change it if I get the correct date.It may not be accurate but is usually a good guess until you have something more positive.[smile]

FH other uses?
Does anyone else use FH for anything other than their own family tree? I am in the process of building a tree of the Royal Family to show all their connections. It started in a small way but I now have nearly 10,000 individuals on it!It just grew and grew and now has French,Spanish,Scottish & Portuge...

I am with AOL and have had no problems sending photos as attachments to emails.I have just sent a 2.8MB jpg file to another address and it arrived safely and downloaded with no problems!

I think I have seen this somewhere but can't think where!
How do I add people to an existing Gedcom Census entry without having to put all the links in separatly.?[grin]

I also think it was a bit harsh giving 0/5 for novices.I have always found FH user friendly and of course the user group can always help when you get stuck! What could be simpler?[grin]

I also keep just the one file for my main tree (3,000+ names so far!).You can always split the tree if you want to.I only have other trees for families that may be connected and if they do I merge it into the main tree.[smile]

Cassini Maps
I have found these maps very useful in researching an area around 150-200 years ago.I find they have helped by showing an area as it used to be and not as it is today.Names etc. have changed some places exist then and not now. Also there are no railways! It just seems to show the area in the right con...

I do pretty much the same and put in anyone who has a connection. My tree has nearly 3000 individuals and quite a lot are not directly related. To help me identify people on diagrams I have a coloured box for my direct ancestors and another colour for my blood relatives.Remember to have the ancestor b...

I have several Gedcoms on the go at any one time just in case the families belong to mine. When I find a link between one and my Main tree I just merge the two (keeping copies of course).I also have people in my main tree that are 'orphans' in that I know they belong to the family but no one knows qu...

I have a lot of information on various places connected to people in my tree (i.e. churches, villages etc.etc..).I have been trying to devise a way to keep all the information together within FH.I have tried using a Note as a place but could not link pictures to it.I have also tried making the Place ...

Early Census Release Petition
I think the census should remain closed until the 100 years has elapsed. At the time the census is taken you are told that the information will not be available for 100 years ,if you change that to suit researchers like ourselves then that trust has been broken. With people living longer now there is ...

I have a couple of Census CD's and have found them very useful. If you have just an index you do not get all the detail (relationships, occupations etc.)I only have them for Hampshire,Bucks and Wilts as these counties contain a lot of ancestors.I have just started using a lady on eBay (deadmonkey52) w...

As I get certificates I number them simply BC/1,BC/2,BC /3 etc. (DC=Death and MC=Marriage).I use this number as the custom ID in FH.When I get a certificate I simply add the next number.I then keep all my certificates in 3 ring binders for Birth,Death & Marriage (Red,Black & Green respectively).They...
