Re: TMG UK Census Fact Definition
Evelyn, just a quick hint as regards your first paragraph. If you think you will be writing a long query or comment on a forum its easier to do it in Word, Notepad or somesuch and then copy and paste the full thing into the forum. Saves the frustration of losing all that typing if the internet lets ...

Nice to have the extra days but it doesn't really make up for it being grindingly slow, and occasionaly giving random results, at the moment!

My first thought was Tasmin! To me it looks like the first letter has been altered from something else to a T.
Gives you an alternative perspective anyway! Truely aweful writing.

Me too Lorna! It always logs you out at a crucial moment as well. Having logged in again it doesn't always take you back to the search you were doing. It really is infuriating and happens about every 10 days or so.

For even more safety I would recommend keeping one of those 3 external backups at someone else's house. Flood, fire ..... you never know!

Re: Citations - is there a correct way?
My point was really that there is surely no 'correct' way necessary to enter ones data and sources into FH. The right way is the way which suits the user and in that respect there are multiple variations. While this forum is incredibly helpful and I read it every day (!) it intrigues me that some us...

To be fair, and for balance, FH doesn't care or force one into doing anything either!

Enjoy your re entering! You will almost certainly find more information and correct old errors. You'll get sidetracked down interesting twigs of your tree and have loads of fun. Don't hurry, just enjoy it!

Re: Reliance on subscription sites FMP, Ancestry etc.
If you have seen an image of a marriage giving date, names of the couple, ages, occupations, names of fathers etc then that is exactly the same as a certificate bought from the GRO for £9.25. Even the layout is the same ... in effect it is a certificate which was completed at the time of the wedding...

Re: End of Line Marker
I would say that the marker is for you to put in. FH can see that a couple have no children added but it does not know how thoroughly you have researched them. Maybe you just didn't get round to adding them. For the marker to appear I would want as much proof as possible that they had no children an...

That describes me, Jane. I never, ever use the focus window! I much prefer to use the property box floating over the record list or a diagram.

Re: 1939 register quandry
When using the 1939 register do make sure you look at the actual page image. The way the indexing and transcription was done was by individual columns so the transcribers never saw the whole page information for people still slive. This has meant that sometimes the lines 'slipped' and people have en...

Well, strangely it seems a lot better today. Goes from 100% to 89% to 80% to 73%, which is perfectly acceptable.

Zoom buttons V6
Has something changed with the W10 Anniversary Update? I used to be able to use the zoom buttons on a diagram to zoom in and out in tiny increments. Just now I noticed that it goes from too big (can't see enough of the diagram) with the +. Then too small (can't read the writing) with the -. I know I...

Re: Difference between marriage by license and marriage by banns?
Banns are more usual if the marriage is to be in the 'home' parish of the bride or groom. A licence could allow the couple to marry in another church, not the home parish of either of them. Different levels of licence from Bishop to Archbishop would be required for different circumstances. (A marria...

Re: Short Certificate of Birth-James Dennis Graham
The certificate you should send for is the one listed above by David. If you examine the image of the GRO index there are no notes by his name. If there was an adoption or re registration there is usually a note and * to the bottom of the page indicating a later year. I would hazard a guess that the...

Re: Can online services support FH research?
FreeBMD provides the Q4 1883 result. All i needed was to enter Dowsett (surname) and Alfred (forename). I included the date range 1880 to 1890. There were only 3 results! Dowsett is an uncommon enough name by itself so you do not always need to put the whole 'Brooks Dowsett' name into search forms. ...

I'm wondering why you say an alphabetical list is 'no good to anyone'. For me that's how I like my people organised so I can find them quickly (preferring to flick down the list rather than type in the search box!).

Re: Can online services support FH research?
Jonathan, on all the big service providers you can check out which records they have. So for example if you are looking for Essex records on FindmyPast, i think you will find they don't have them, which is why nothing came up in the search. FMP are more likely to give 'no result' than Ancestry who l...

Re: Notes missing from exported GEDCOM
I have the Heredis app on my iPad, which I just use for reference when out and about. I seem to get all my notes but have found they are quite well hidden away down some layers of a person's information. I'm sure you have gone down all those tracks but just thought I would mention it 'just in case'....

You can use FreeBMD with the same result and no subscription charge. I must say, though, that the copy you have looks better than some I have bought from the GRO. They tend to use a photocopied strip unless the original is very poor. However some of mine are abysmal and make me wonder what they cons...

Yes, I've seen that box character and noticed it appeared (does it still, not sure?) when I try to make a new paragraph, using 'return', in a note.
