Missing Birth Certificate
1911 Census.... Have you seen the Clifford Elsworth aged 2 months, living in Rawdon with James and Ada Anderson. He is their nephew - no sign of his mother. It says he was born in Hawkesworth, which is in Leeds. There does not appear to be a birth certificate in the index for him. He would have been...

People who died as children
Just for interest, on the subject of flags and those who died young. I made a little black cross icon to flag people who died young on diagrams. Its quite useful and shows how terribly unlucky (or lucky) some families were.

The way I do it ..... Your 'source' for these unproven relatives is the person you obtained the information from. I just put their name and details for the time being so I know it is not a 'proper' source. Later if/when I can prove the relationship I add to the list of sources but I usually leave th...

I've ordered from them a few times and had no problems. To be fair, the terms they are telling you are normal GPO practice.

Finding a specific individual
In the Records window (see Jane's post) you can type into the search boxes at the top. This is a quick tip if you have a LOT of people with the same surname but you do know the spouse surname of the person you seek. Type in the spouse surname and bingo you'll also have access the person you are look...

Word Documents and FH Reports
I guess you could always paste the Word document into the notes for the inividual, then it would appear in the report.
I don't think there's a limit on how big a 'note' can be?

Upgraded to v4 - Have I Been Done?
Persevere! You'll soon get used to any new bits. Mostly you can use it in exactly the same way as v3.
I was a bit stalled by the changes at first but the benefits - yes the Projects!!!!! - do outweigh the further learning curve in my opinion.

Thanks for the suggestions. I will investigate those, Jane thanks. Alan - you must be very disciplined to remember every time - I always worry I'll get carried away with excitement of new discoveries and forget the basic housekeeping!

Files on two computers
I mostly use a desktop for my FH and other files. Sometimes I use my husband's laptop and have copies (partly as a backup) on there too. I know that I am in danger of adding info to FH while working on the laptop and then not transferring it to the desktop. If I then updated the laptop files from th...

Thanks for the replies. I haven't altered anything except the Gedcom files. Not added any photos or anything. So in words of one sylable (for a numpty [oops]) can I replace the Gedcom file still in the Project with the same but updated one on my memory stick? If I do that will the photos still conne...

I can see I will be getting in a muddle! I am happily using V4.0.2 and have several Projects for various families (unrelated to each other). My main computer is having problems, which I hope will soon be resolved and in the meantime I am using my husband's laptop, also with V4.0.2 installed. Because...

In other words the PDF 'printer' is a virtual printer. It does not try to print on paper but will 'print' to the PDF program. It had me foxed as well until I was told about this.

Brilliant!!!
I don't have adoptions but looking at this work through has opened all sorts of other possibilities to me. I know all the details are in the help files but, as they say, a picture is worth a thousand words. Thanks for taking the time to do this!

Diagram shrinking?
When I printed out a massive tree for a family meeting (described in another tread) I managed to get the diagram down from about 45 pages to 30 pages. First I reduced the whole thing to 75% of the original. Any less than this and the print is too samll for a display diagram. Secondly (as Jane says) ...

Great idea, Bilko!
We had trouble finding a place for our long tree too. We managed to get 6 trestle tables in a row, in the end. The only other option was the floor - not a good idea with the combined ages of many of those present at the meeting!!!

With care you can join A4 pages together very satisfactorily. I did one to take to a family reunion. It was 7 metres long!!!! and in plces 3 pages 'high'. The main problem was keeping it all in a line as you work along but, with the aid of a table edge, I did it. I then rolled it up to transport. I ...

I was also reluctant to change to V4 but I did in the end and I'm happy [smile]. I don't use the focus window much though! One of my 'projects' is a One Name study. The Gedcom contains a lot of unconnected families. With V3 I used to get frustrated that the list of names (many of which are the same ...

Family Tree on A0 size paper
We had a great meeting and the tree was 6 metres long!!! We just laid it out on tables. Lots of new additions were made and I have updated the FH tree on my computer. It was well worth doing but I don't think larger paper would have helped much.

Well its a nice offer - thanks [smile] but as I explained I never feel ready to print a proper, permanent tree! I have just done one for a big VERY extended family meet-up. Its not very tall (1.5 landscape A4) but it is 22 landscape A4 sheets long!!! I did my very best to compress it but you can onl...

Errrmmmm ... I just stick lots of A4 sheets together if I want to print it.
I never do a permanent one because if I did it would be just before I made a big new discovery and I'd have to do it all over again.[lol][lol][lol]

techniques for one-name studies
I help with a small One Name Society. What I (and my predecessor) do is make one big gedcom with everyone on it. Adding new people and making little family trees within the same gedcom file. It gets quite big and you might end up with duplicates! It doesn't matter so long as you are aware of that. O...
