See the same discussion in the V4 Usage forum. It seems to be McAfee's fault.

FH stopped working
Well! I've just had BT Netprotect on the phone. They suggest uninstalling FH and re-intalling, which they suggest should resolve the problem. I guess I'll try that although with several update discs its a bit of a faff. I assume I can unistall FH without touching my folder of FH Projects? I have it ...

FH stopped working
We have a spare laptop so I've disconnected it from the internet and am using FH on there until this gets resolved! Its working just fine because, fortuantely, we didn't turn it on during the last few days so no updates!

I've emailed BT Netprotect Plus. I'm not holding my breath but I'll let you know if I get a reply.

FH stopped working
Oh *&^%%$$!!! My McAfee scanned and updated this morning and now I find I have the same problem as everyone else. We get McAfee from BT for all our computers and I'm reluctant to change things. Maybe I'll wait a day or so and see if things change. Any other suggestions (apart from removing McAfee)??...

Ancestry - West Yorkshire parish records
I'm in heaven with these records! Mostly I am confirming proper dates which I only had from the IGI before. This has lead me to the suspicion that some of the parishes do not have the correct name attached to them. I have emailed Ancestry who say they are looking into it .... meanwhile just watch ou...

How do you get declared dead?
When your wife's grandfather remarried he wouldn't have had to prove he was a widower. I guess he would just keep his fingers crossed that no-one stood up in the wedding ceremony and claimed to be his wife or her relation.

In my experience .... if you try to enter a date which is 'impossible' you get a warning flash up on the screen asking if you really mean that.

Parish Registers in FH
I keep my own transcriptions (which can run to 100s for any one parish) on a separate Excel file so I can sort and search them to help find other families with the names I have transcribed. I wouldn't attach the whole file to FH but just use the particular bit describing, say, the baptism. My source...

If I want a copy of an email (I do use Webmail) I just copy and paste it into a Word document, then add any date or other stuff that needs to go with it. In this way, if there is a followup message I can continue in the same document to the natural conclusion of the exchange. I have no problem copyi...

Unwanted link
In the case of the diagram in the first post..... Is Mary Shelton in fact Mary Withers? If so then I would have thought you might be able to delete Mary Shelton - you don't seem to have much info about her - presumably because you later realised she should be under her maiden name of Withers? Or may...

Index of Wills and Administrations 1861-1941
This index allowed me to find a will that went to Probate 17 years after the death. I had looked for one in the annual calendars but hadn't gone on sooooo long! I sent for it and it solved a major, longstanding brick wall in my tree! Don't expect a quick return of your will - I think they are innund...

Searching Census by address?
It wasn't many years ago that the ONLY way to look for someone in a census was to trawl through the pages, either on a disc or at the archives. It took hours and hours.

Displaying information on Diagrams
I use flags on diagrams to show I have copies of certificates. I use a red 'ball' shape for birth certs, green for marriages and black for deaths. I find it very useful to see at a glance which ones I have. I also use a little cross (like a grave marker) for those who have died young. Then I can see...

Backup copies
Thanks for your help. I think I can do it now. I'll create another folder to put dated gedcom copies in - thanks Jane. Gerry - yes I do back up to an external hard disk and a memory stick and ALSO sometimes put everything on a DVD and send it to my son's house in another town!!! However - what I am ...

Backup copies
I think I'm being a bit dense here. [oops] When I used V3 I used to periodically make a dated backup of the Gedcom file so I could (if necessary) go back to it in case I deleted something vital or did any other silly thing. I never actually used any of them but was reassured they were there. Now I'm...

No Fan Chart Available, which is next best ? .
Ah! Thats a good idea - never thought of that. The only thing I miss about my old, horrible FH program (which will remain nameless!) is the fan and circle charts it produced. They look pretty for presenting to someone with not much interest in the family! [lol]

I'm sure you are doing this but I find that unless I have actually clicked somewhere in the Records window it will not scroll. Just click anywhere and all is fine.

Dad's last wish
Sorry to hear about you Dad. I can understand you wanting to do as he wished, but it might be a mammoth task. Is paying someone else to do it an option? There may be experienced/professional genealogists who could make sense of it all for you. Some programs do have a 'book' facility. However in my o...

How frustrating for you! I guess you might have to consider the possiblity that he was using a different forename than the one he was registered with. How you would ever find that out without trying every Lincoln baby born in the time period I have no idea.[frown]
