Why does FH run at variable speeds?
I'm suspecting this is just something to do with my computer but thought I'd post it here in case its a more common problem. I run Windows XP with all the updates and Family Historian 4.1.3. My problem is that I never know how FH will run. Some days it speeds along with no problem but other times it...

One-place studies
Not the same as yours, but I us FH for a One Name study. I currently have 123 different trees all in the same project. I makes it relatively easy to spot when families from different areas do actually have a common ancestor and can be joined up to them. I guess the same would occur in one place when...

I was thinking 'Where does FH store stuff?'[grin]
But I guess that's far too simplistic! I'm just thinking about trying to find (quickly!) the right information without becoming discouraged by trawling through searches. I know ..... I'm lazy!

Are Flags, Place Lists etc. universal or project
As has been said .... incredibly useful and interesting. BUT could I ask for an easier to understand title, please? I'm not sure I would find it with that title if I was looking for advice in the Knowledge Base. I will definitely want to find it again!

Online databases e.g WVR, Findmypast and Ancestry
I've used Ancestry for several years. Their parish record images (London, Liverpool, West Yorkshire) are excellent. As research manager for a One Name Society those images alone have 'saved' us £1,000s in marriage certificates!! I've only just started using FMP. Like others I find the searching good...

saving changes
Thanks for drawing attention to this. I did know that FH doesn't automatically save but I had sort of 'forgotten'. I had a bit of a setback one day when we had a sudden power cut [cry].

Programme freezing
I have had some slowness (although not complete freezing) as well. On some days when I am using the program it takes ages to accept a new piece of information. Other days all is quick as normal. I have put it down to various updates of my anti virus, specially after the fiasco last autumn with McAfe...

Help editing narrative reports
I want to produce a narrative descendant report to send to a contact. I have saved it into MS Word and have edited the content as I want it. Can anyone help me with a final niggle, please? Word insists on putting each new Generation on a new page, which means some pages are nearly empty! I have trie...

Something that I do (really simple for simple me!!) is .....
in the Records Window click at the top of the column called birth place. The entries will be re-ordered alphabetically so you can pick out all those born in a particular place.

Baptism date help
The way the numerals are written is common for this sort of date, not only in the parish registers but also in other church notes I have seen. For example the old vestry notes for our church say there used to be 'iiij lytel belles' in the tower (four little bells!)

Splitting a Tree
For a number of years now I have used a diagram based way of spliiting off part of my tree. Robin Price did the details of it and I am always confident about using it .... dim as I am!

What did DNA do for your research?
Let me tell you about the successes our One Name Study has had with male Y-chromosome DNA. Emphasis on the MALE .. this is not suitable for matching females or those with an illegitimate past because the Y-choromosome is only passed to males and therefore keeps the same surname. Hence the success wi...

FH stopped working
Well, after wasting over an hour unistalling/re-installing BT NetProtect ...... predictably it has not worked. To be fair to BT they did ring me back again (thrid time)while I was doing it and say they were escalating the inquiry and the unintall of McAfee didn't work!!!! You can be pretty sure they...

Just had a phone call from BR NetProtect who are telling me to uninstall McAfee and then reinstall from the BT NetProtect site. Hmmm ... will it work? sounds unlikely! Will let you know how I get on.

Flag icons on diagrams
Ah! I see what you mean. I can recreate the icons on the laptop diagrams so they match the ones on the PC by adding each flag to the Diagrams>Options>boxes section. I was always able to do that. However I am still surprised that they didn't move with the FH Project folder since the icons are there a...

Thanks for that Tatewise. However only one icon is one I created myself (and I knew that might not travel!). The others are all spots of various colours provided by FH. Its a mystery now to me that they don't show up on the diagrams on the laptop.

Was going to email McAfee but found it wanted me to download some big file for Virtual Technician. I've got enough McAfee thanks without downloading more. All I want to do is send a simple email. Good news [tongue] that the gaming people are also having problems. I suspect they may be even less pati...

Thanks very much, I did look but couldn't find that. I have copied the Calico Pie folder over and there's good news and bad! Good news is that a couple of 'new' flags I had made are now listed with the individuals Bad news is that the icons still don't show on the diagrams! Ah well, hopefully the pr...

The current problems with FH and McAfee have caused me to think about where things are saved. I have FH also on a laptop which I have disconnected from the internet so I can continue working. I copied my whole Family Historian Projects folder to a memory stick to use on the laptop. As far as I can s...

There is also a thread on the BT Community Forums.
I have decided not to uninstall FH and reinstall. Like others I do not believe this will be any use and I have a whole series of upgrades. Thanks Tatewise for pointing me to reading the reinstalling details first!!!
