Newbie: Online Research
I think (only think!!) that the New Family Search has mostly extracted records in its main results when searching. I 'think' that the user submitted (less reliable ) records are in another part of the website. I know I've used a list from the 'New' search to help find entries in actual Parish Record...

FH freezing amp; slow.
This happens to me sometimes. I have McAfee and some updates make it worse than others. If I turn off the continuous scanning all is fine. Sadly my McAfee is free with my BTinternet and does not have the facility to remove FH from the scanning. Its not so much of a problem to make me find alternativ...

Icon help when printing
Ah, thanks for that one Mike. I'm often having to explain the icons on diagrams I make for other people because it seemed such a faff to turn them off. Didn't think of a 'once and for all' solution like this. I guess I thought Custom Diagrams were for saving one specific diagram and not a type of st...

FindmyPast does have transcriptions of Scottish Cesuses. but he doesn't show up in 1881, 1891 or 1901.
There are a few Thatchers in Scotland in each census but not many!
With the horse racing connection I wonder about Ireland?

Yes, I too keep losing parishes but have quite often found it is mispelled or differently named and therefore not appearing on the results. After initially hating it I now really like the new familysearch. Mainly because now you can be much more flexible in searching. For example you can just search...

Different Fathers on Birth/Marriage Cert
Mistakes are always possible but there's a big difference in the names here! Who did your mother marry? I have seen the bride and grooms' fathers names transposed on a certificate before now. What name did your mother grow up with? I guess its possible she found out a family secret before she marrie...

Delete any individuals with not related to root
Can you make them all appear on a tree? If so the quickest way to delete a lot of individuals that I've found it to select them all on the diagram>click edit>delete. You will get a warning box asking if you want to delete them from the diagram or delete them permanently. You have to tick a box to sa...

Diagrams in Powerpoint presentation
Thank you Peter! I saved them at 300% zoom and the .jpg files are less than 200kb. The result is about the same clarity as the enormous .bmp images but obviously much better because much smaller file to cope with! My mistake had been to try and increase the % size of the diagram itself. This doesn't...

Diagrams in Powerpoint presentation
Thanks for that. I've read the article, had a play and saved a diagram in all sorts of file types and sizes. It is only a small diagram with 9 people on, so saved at 100% it fits onto the slide with no dragging to re-size needed. Unfortunately it is very fuzzy. I have found (so far!!) that the best ...

Diagrams in Powerpoint presentation
Yes, having tried Jane's idea of doing the .bmp as 100% I found the file was not nearly large enough to be sharp. What I did in the end was to make the diagram (only about 8 people) VERY large on the screem with the zoom. Then made a .bmp file from that. The files were about 6Mb but when diminished ...

Diagrams in Powerpoint presentation
I'm preparing a talk for our Family History Society and making a Powerpoint presentation (MS Office Powerpoint 2003). I want to include extracts of diagrams from FH but am having trouble making them sharp enough. I have tried .jpg and .bmp and even snipping from .pdf but non of them have the clarity...

Notice that all the examples people use for church names omit the full stop after the Saint ..... St Mary. I believe that if the abbreviation has the last letter of the word it does not require a full stop. (me = pedant!!) However a more important reason I have found (with a huge database of parish ...

Updating a project after a family history trip
I'm a big believer in Drag and Drop (I've said this before!). I keep my FH projects backed up by dragging and dropping the whole folder onto a Memory Stick. Recently I used OH's laptop while we were away. I had put my whole Project folder onto the laptop before we went away by dropping it into the D...

'New!' Persists after Reading Postings
Same for me too! Just read two 'new' post in General. The first one I read (2nd on down) stayed with its 'new' but the second one I read (at the top of the list) had 'new' removed when I had read it.
I recall this happening before about 2 or 3 months ago!

I usually click on the column called 'Updated' in the records window, which brings the last person I was working on to the top.

Why does FH run at variable speeds?
Thought someone ... anyone? ... might be interested to know that I have proved the intermittent slowness I have had with FH was due to the 'real time scanning' from McAfee. Thank you McAfee for a poor experience! Needless to say I turn it off while using FH and no more problems.

Time to Spring Clean and De-Clutter?
Maybe I'm doing the wrong thing?? Please tell me if there is a flaw in my method. Every day I drag my complete Family Historian Projects folder from My Documents on my PC to a USB memory stick. I allow it to overwrite the previous day's version so I only have the most up to date one. I also drag the...

Someone I know is interested in making a 'How To' movie like Jane's excellent ones on this forum. They make instructions so easy to follow! Please can you tell me how you make a movie like these? A Trial for Bigamy
So if the 1938 marriage was bigamous there must have been an even earlier one. Have you found that one too? As I understand it only the first wife is the 'real' one. Until she dies or divorces him, all the others are not considered to be married properly and therefore do not need to divorce the biga...

Why does FH run at variable speeds?
Thanks for the suggestions I have 3 projects. One has 10,000 individuals (a one name study) but hardly any media attached. The other two are mine and OH's families with some media attached. However it doesn't seem to be that because any of the three can have a 'go slow' on any day .... or not! The l...
