Re: Novice needs help with Brick Wall
One way would be to follow BOTH the Ann Frenchs and see what happens to them. Is there a burial record for one of them? Are their parents names different? If not the younger one might be a later child of the same set of parents. Do they both have siblings? They might witness marriages. Do both of th...

Re: Seaching Multiple Projects
I don't pretend to any advanced knowledge of the deeper workings of FH. However I do run two separate one name studies and am very happy with them. They are completely different names so I have one Project for each. Within the 'Name' project I don't have any trouble selecting a family group. I just ...

Re: Help with deciphering a name
I think its John. It often used to be spelt Jhon. Also I've frequently seen both (or even all) witnesses the same sex, usually but not always male.

Re: Abbreviated Name Ma
Having looked on Ancestry and found the records with the first name MA in Nottinghamshire, I think there are two possibilities. 1. It is short for Mary Ann (but that name was less common in 1710) 2. It is a quirk of the person who did the transcribing. You need to see the actual record to see what y...

Re: iPad Apps comparisons?
Just for information ..... I went with Heredis in the end. I only wanted to view the Gedcom files and not edit them. It works very well and is very useful when away from the computer. Mine is an iPad Mini which I really love but too small for "proper" work. Great as a reference and reminder though. ...

iPad Apps comparisons?
I have had a look at previous topics and also read the descriptions of Heredis, Gedfamilies and Geview. Before I decide which to use on my iPad I wondered if anyone could comment on my particular need? I have all my FH stuff in one FH Projects folder as recommended. I have four different projects; t...

Yes, Mike, I think that's helpful. What stumped me yesterday was where to BEGIN looking for the Hidden Files tick box. All sorted now, thanks.

Thank you Jane. Just what I needed.
Mike, I tried, I really did but couldn't find them.
Anne
Edit to say: Mike I've done it! I committed the serious error of trying to do something new under time pressure. With no pressure this morning it was easy! Thanks both for all your help.

Sorry to but in on this thread but I have spent the last hour trying to find the FH Progam Data file on Windows 8. All I need is to find the file with icons for diagrams!

Hear, Hear! A big thank you from me too!
Whenever I recommend FH to anyone, FHUG is one of the reasons I cite as advantages of using the prog.

LOL! I got that message BUT I really was printing something else not from FH.
Naughty me! I got myself a different free PDF writer as the message looks a bit naff on the bottom of every page.

Re: Default Backups
Ummmm, I know this isn't the expert way but here goes. Every time I work on one of my families I do a back up. All my families are in the Family Historian Projects folder. To back up I insert a USB memory stick and drag the whole Projects folder onto it. I also now do the same back up to my Dropbox ...
Re: Ancestry
Ron, as Tatwise says, only SOME parish record marriage certificates are available. They are for selected areas (selected by Ancestry and Findmypast) and only those before the 1920s or 1930s can be found. You have to search for them in the Parish Record section, not the BMD section.

Yep, just to confirm, I use Chrome and the word malicious was used in the warning. No problem with the download though.

Re: V5.09
Yes, I got a message saying it looked as if it was malicious. I'm afraid I ignored it. I THINK it was a windows message and not from my AV (BT's McAfee) but I can't be sure. I have Windows 8 and I assumed it was nannying me. Hope I wasn't wrong! The download came from Calico Pie anyway. Anne

Re: Ancestry
It is possible to get images of marriage certificates on Ancestry and FindMyPast. These are images of the certificate in parish records and contain exactly the same information as a GRO certificate. I have saved many pounds in this way! Not all areas are available but Ancestry has much of London, fo...

Close Focus window?
Oh dear I'm here again already! On Version 4 I used to be able to close the Focus Window. I don't seem to be able to do that with Version 5? I prefer to use the Property Box over the Records Window. I know I can do that anyway but it irritates me to have the Focus Window there (picky aren't I ...

Icons on toolbar too small
I've just had to move to a new Windows 8 computer .... not finding it too bad so far except I am struggling with the sizes of displays in general, but getting there. I decided to buy a new version of FH rather than upgrade and it installed just fine and found all my stuff. My problem is that the ico...
