Re: Marriage names

Humph!! I see all you blokes don't think a woman needs to keep her identity. Although I took my husband's name by convention I maintain I am still the same person I was when I was born. That is my unique identity. It really irritates me when I see trees (eg on Ancestry) where the women are not enter...

Re: Marriage names

A woman should always have her own maiden name. She was still the same person who was born Sarah Cooper! I usually make a note that she was a widow with the surname Hodkins at marriage with my relative.

Re: Opening a second project in a new window

Just open another Family Historain. If you open from the desktop by double clicking the icon you can open as many as you want. I have found that if you open from the modern window of 8.1 it doesn't work. Use the desktop icon and it does!

Re: Windows 10

Anne, Run as Administrator gives a program, and any subsidiary tasks, extra privileges that may overcome some restrictions. It is invoked by locating the program's executable file, then right-click on the file to obtain its context menu, and choose Run as Administrator . That only applies for one r...

Re: Windows 10

Can I ask a stupid question of you clever computer people? What does 'run as administrator' mean? I have never come across it ... should I have? Is it something I have missed, or (more hopefully) something I have avoided? I have a relatively new desk top computer with Windows 8 (upgraded to 8.1) loa...

Re: Windows 10

Ha! I'm still not even rushing to upgrade to FH6! I've been keeping an eye on how it all works for people. Hmmmm .... when I decide to jump, should I go for Windows 10 first or FH6 first? I have Windows 8.1 at the moment and have always been very happy with it.

I would think that it was true his father was a soldier. That was most likely the reason he was in India. Hopefully you will be able to find Army records for him. Might be worth considering East India Company records too.

Re: Stripping back

In actual fact 2100 people is not that many. I would recommend starting again as an excercise in checking all your work. You would be amazed at how many incosistencies you have and how much more data there is to find these days. That would be my choice. However I'm sure there are clever ways of sort...

Hmmm! Also remember the problem with BT Net Protection by McAffee a year or so ago. It did come to mind while I was following this thread but I'm not very experienced so thought I should keep quiet. Sorry I didn't suggest it sooner.

Re: How do you solve Road Blocks?

As a small aside, I notice you are questioning the occupation 'plumber' in 1869. There have been plumbers for 100s of years the name meaning originally 'working with lead'. Lead water pipes and lead window glazing were part of the job. My gggrandfather was a plumber and glazier on the 1861 census. C...

Re: How do you solve Road Blocks?

Giving her age as 19 may have looked better to our modern eyes but she would have still needed permission from someone because the age of majority was 21 at the time. It was perfectly legal to marry at 14 at that time so why lie about her age? I have seen marriages of Minors that say "with the conse...

Re: Ipad GED file reading.

You probably found my thread about this. I got the app Heredis in the end. I have no intention of actually using it to record any family history but it is certainly useful enough to take with you as a memory aid at the Archives or library. Importing a very large Gedcom file was easy but I haven't bo...

Re: Diagrams (All Relatives)

If a diagram is to remain easily understood the generations really do need to be aligned if at all possible. I have printed large diagrams in the past and condensed them in two ways. One, by reducing the %scale, but remember it still needs to be readable. Two with families that have large numbers of...

You were correct, Mike. The temporary files were left over by a glitch in YNAB. I got in touch with them and they were excellent at sorting out quickly for me.

It sounds a great idea but please bear in mind that some of your relatives may not be as computer savvy as you are. This might specially apply to those older generation who could perhaps give you the information. Sometimes face-to-face is the only way!

Re: Opening more than 1 project

To open FH I double click the desktop icon, and choose the project from the project window. When I want another project open I just repeat that. I've often had two projects open at the same time and don't doubt I could have more if needed.
