Toponymy 2, Trial version

I have just downloaded and installed it with no problem, on XP.

At first glance it looks much improved.

Web/CD - Option for larger photo

Jon

I agree with you but the wish list item should be amended to reflect this. As it stands it will be possible to enlarge all images.

Web/CD - Option for larger photo

Nick There is a good reason form maintaining census pages and BMD certificates as thumbnails if they are to be mounted on a public website, namely copyright.  If they are fully legible then the terms under which you obtained them would be broken as they can only be used for your own personal use or ...

Gedcom Census Ref Code

Jon

Thanks for finding the explanation, I assumed they meant something but I never thought to look.

They definitely appear on the index page when doing a search on Scotland's People.

Gedcom Census Ref Code

Nick The census dates are the same for Scotland as England and Wales.   References are of the form >  I think they initial numbers, after 'Census 1861' refer to an area, possibly county, as they are constant for the same area over time. I never add the 'Census 1861' part to the reference but on refl...

Gedcom Census Ref Code

This is a useful time saver unless you happen to be entering census data from Scotland.

I overcome it by switching off the option when doing a batch of Scottish censuses - but then I invariably forget to turn it on again.  Is there a way around this?

Chapman Codes

I use Chapman Codes within FH but they look a bit ugly and often incomprehensible to others who look at reports and diagrams.

It would be nice to have an option for FH to convert Chapman Codes to full text in reports and diagrams.

Uploading FH GED File to Ancestry.co.uk

David

If you want to continue using Firefox, which I do, then you have to download the IE Tab. In layman's terms this allows Firefox to look like IE and you can upload to, and download image files from, Ancestry without problem.

Uploading FH GED File to Ancestry.co.uk

Which web browser are you using?

It will only work with IE - took me 2 months to work it out!

GC Backup

Nick

Sorry I had not actually clicked on the 'Remove old back up files' button assuming that it would delete them all.

I am quite happy with this solution.

GC Backup

I had cause to use GC Backup today and I am very grateful that the program has this feature. However, I discovered that, unlike FH, GC does not zip the backup files.  I discovered that I have hundreds of backup files amounting to many megabytes. Is it possible to either zip the backup files or else ...

Microfiche to digital format

You also don't say what resolution or what type of compression algorithm (if any) you are proposing.  Both these are crucial. All scans of microfiche will initially be in TIFF format but, as others have pointed out, the file sizes could be large - astronomically if scanned in colour.  It is essentia...

Birth name v Adopted name

I have a similar problem with a signicant male relative. His mother died when he was very young and he went to live with his wife's sister, who was married. He 'adopted' the surname of his uncle - I do not think a formal adoption process ever took place and the event happened before official records...
