File-gt;Save As

I have some sympathy with this request. Since moving to V4 and projects I've got my project set to auto-open, which means I don't use those dialogs much. So when I came to create a free-standing GEDCOM file the other day, I was floundering around a bit because I didn't remember where things were. As...

Place List

Of course, if there was, and you did, that would be shortly before you found your first American place with a totally different pattern. [lol] (Seriously - I think there is a means of identifying the hierarchy in some version or other of GEDCOM, including the option to assign different hierarchies t...

Hinting for ';List in order'; button

On the Facts tab for an Individual's properties, there is a button carrying 3 dots whose hint, when you hover over it, currently reads 'List in Order'. Recent correspondence on the mailing list makes it clear this means 'List in physical order'. The phrase 'List in Order' is ambiguous in that it doe...

WW1 records on Ancestry

Just a thought - have you paged back to check the previous images? Certainly when the stuff first came out, the link went to the Attestation form, even if there were other images for the same soldier and I did have to scroll back to find other stuff - including a 1980s letter from another family his...

Adding Multimedia records to remember last folder

When Adding Multimedia, FH should remember the last folder used to add Multimedia from and start with that when presenting the Insert Pictures dialog box. Currently FH remembers it during a session, but not after FH has been closed down. Since I am now using Projects, the folder is quite a way down ...

Who should be included on a family Tree?

Wholly agree with previous comments. Do whatever you want and whatever interests you - but equally (a) credit the person as a source (b) don't load it if it's not up to your own standards. For instance, as a general rule I am happy to load data from my contacts in GenesReunited where it relates to t...

Add PLACE and SOURCE to Multimedia objects

See May 2009 discussion in mailing list about adding a Source Citation to Multimedia Records. It should be possible to store where a multimedia record has come from (e.g. book title), where within that (e.g. page number), who holds copyright, rights of reproduction, etc. It should be noted that the ...

Upgrade path for eventual V5

The version 4 might not be a CD, it could just be a download
Yes - I confess I deliberately didn't mention downloads because I wasn't sure how to handle them!

Upgrade path for eventual V5

Logically it ought to be possible to install the upgrade edition of v5 onto a bare machine - at some point in the proceedings, the installation routine should ask for the v4 CD to be loaded temporarily and the v4 CD should be accepted whether it's an upgrade or full edition. I'm fairly certain that'...

Extend GEDCOM as Notes

People have suggested breaking out of GEDCOM 5.5. The problem is that this breaks the whole point of standardisation on a standard. However, if the extensions were held as XML in Note records, then anyone passing the GEDCOM to someone else would still be passing a valid GEDCOM, while FH could suppre...

Re 'the medal card index on ancestry'. Don't go there as a first choice - use the one on the TNA site for the Documents Online(?) section, because that index is complete - the Ancestry index to the Medal Index Cards is only part complete. However, go to the Ancestry index later, because if it IS the...

Right truncation option for Place formats

Agreed that lines it all up Jon but if I use a place name with the medium format in a diagram, I would then get either 'Nantwich' or 'Vauxhall, Nantwich' - which is fine for me 'cos I know where Nantwich is, but I'd like to add the 'Cheshire' on the diagram for those that don't. I get a similar prob...

Right truncation option for Place formats

Current Place Formats allow options to truncate after the first or second comma counting from the left (Short or Medium). It would be helpful to have an option that allows truncation counting from the right. Thus 'Drop 1 from right' would render 'Nantwich, Cheshire, England' as 'Nantwich, Cheshire' ...

Responsible Agency on reports

What I forgot to say was that while Occupation might be the classic case to use this, RESPONSIBLE_AGENCY ought to be printed wherever it has been input.

(CAUSE_OF_EVENT is another tag that appears classically on the Death event, could occur on other events, and ought to be printed if it does).

Responsible Agency on reports

In GEDCOM, the tag 'RESPONSIBLE_AGENCY' can be used with (say) an Occupation attribute to describe which company the individual worked for. I would like to see it on the Events tab for the Occupation attribute (for ease of input) and printed on the individual, family and narrative reports when it is...
