Re: Automatic Source Citations do not auto populate

Some concern from this v5 user. If I've just entered a source in v5 and request auto citation, then the source is automatically pre-selected. Are we saying that in v6 I will need to select the source again? in a drop down list containing all the source records? Because drop down lists are much harde...

Re: Change default browser

FH is not the only software to have this issue - Ancestry upset a number of people by placing limits on the version of IE used in similar circumstances. It's a subtle point but in these cases the software is not launching a web browser (such as IE or Firefox) - rather it's launching a bit of softwar...

Re: Sources

In effect, the notes and text from source values entered on the source record, apply to the source as a whole and so by default to all facts linked to the source. But you might want to (sort of) overwrite those items (or select bits for highlight) for single facts - that's when you'd use the corresp...

Re: Pedigree Chart help

I would start with the "Ancestor Diagram", using options "Generations Up" as far as you need to go; "Orientation" Right-left ( why isn't this left to right for goodness sake? I start with me at the left and go to my ancestors on the right? ); Then use a text scheme to show the bits you want - for va...

Re: Configuring Places (containing Farm) in Sentence Templat

... And I do recall being told by a Commander RN that they serve "in" any ship or boat, not on it Hey - I'll take any excuse to get all 3 of the Army, RN and RAF as "in" - especially if it is actually probably pedantically correct. Yes, "he served in HMS Victory" - works for me, now that I think ab...

Re: Configuring Places (containing Farm) in Sentence Templat

... they might be Fleet Air Arm and serve at HMS Heron in 846 NAVAL AIR SQUADRON! Thank you Jane for that thought, and goodnight! :? Actually, joking aside, I can see why the "stone frigates" like HMS Heron get "at" - they are more like places. But I do have a stoker in my database who was allocate...

Re: Configuring Places (containing Farm) in Sentence Templat

Firstly let me thank Jane for the solution to deciding on "at" or "in" - when I get onto v6, I will have to try to apply this to my Military Service attribute because you serve on a ship but in a regiment / battalion / brigade. Although the criteria might be a bit more complex... And I need a defini...

Looks at first sight like the link to use is https://www.google.com/maps/d/ to Google's New "My Maps".

Re: Map usages

John - interesting - didn't realise those sites still worked. It may be a thing to explore - to see if I could get maps loaded on such a site, linked from the WordPress blog. Not sure how clunky the arrangement would be but I'm not yet sure how I want to to use such a beast. I have found this http:/...

Re: Map usages

Thanks Mike - the example map gives me something concrete to understand and think about - however, looking at the HTML source, I am unsure how much of that I can get into a Wordpress.com blog - there is an option to show the HTML but I have a suspicion that not everything is accessible. And I think ...

Map usages

Right now I have absolutely no domestic time to upgrade to v6 - but that doesn't stop me thinking about it. One of the major aspects is obviously Maps and Places. I have been attempting to follow some of the threads about the limitations of the "internal" FH Geocoding. I shall only say that if the a...

Re: Recording sources

For me, parish records differ depending on whether it's (1) a derivative copy such as a microfilm or digitised image that can be regarded as pretty much identical to the original - so author = the church in this case and publication details say something like 'digital image in "digital image in "Sta...

Re: Recording sources

I would suggest putting the description of the collection into a Shared Note Record and linking to it from every Source record of that type. Not sure how that will come out in a report but clearly if you run off a narrative report you don't want to have the same description printed against every sou...

One tree for everyone in my view. Because
  • It's easy enough to navigate round by name anyway;
  • There's at least a possibility that the two trees will link up in the (perhaps not so deep) past.

Ancestral Sources is not an automatic update. You enter the data. Yes, AS puts it somewhere in a GEDCOM file, but so does Family Historian.

Bristol was a County Corporate so the city had some powers like a county. However for geographical purposes the rest of the world considered Bristol to be in Gloucestershire until the creation of the County of Avon. If you describe Clifton for instance as Clifton, Bristol, County of Bristol, England...

Re: Place/Address

For what it's worth... One of the things to consider is what the data looks like in outputs , especially in a narrative report - and, let's face it, "Wandsworth, Wandsworth, London" doesn't look good does it? I often use a 4-part place-name for the UK of "Local area, major town/Borough, County, Coun...

Unicode UTF-16 and text editors

Right now, my domestic workload means I am having to stick with v5 but I am, of course, taking a keen interest in v6. One thing interests me - on numerous occasions, I have opened up my GEDCOM in a text editor (Notepad++ is my current favourite) and hacked around to do things like alter tags. What w...

I'd encourage you not to be intimidated by creating your own custom facts. They may seem complex the first few times but I now seldom bother downloading fact sets off the FHUG site as it's usually quicker to create my own. Of course, that means I don't get any standardisation with others... The real...

I think it's important to record the sources that you looked at and discarded but it will almost certainly confuse if you cite them against people that, in the final analysis, aren't them. If I understand the circumstances correctly, then I would describe the discarded ones by copy and paste within ...

Re: Death with Corrected Entry

Having checked my only example of an RCE, I'd agree with Lorna. One death event with the note to it explaining the issue of the two separate documents. Two source records, one for the original certificate, the second for the RCE document. The death event should cite both sources. In the note to the ...
