Re: How do you solve Road Blocks?

For what it's worth, the omission of a father's name implies she admitted to being illegitimate. That would suggest that you can discard any birth certificate with married parents as not being her. Unless, of course, the mother lied about her marriage. And unfortunately, it's not easy for you to tel...

Re: Automatic Source Citations do not auto populate

I think it is often useful to have alternative ways of doing similar thing. Absolutely. If you log-off, you have to start the selection process from scratch anyway, so what is the difference between Find Source Record in the Auto Source Citation pane, and finding it in the Records Window ~ Sources ...

Re: Automatic Source Citations do not auto populate

Also, I just thought... there is something fundamentally illogical about using a Citation pane to create a Source-record (be it cloned or whatever) - the two are different entity types and ought to be kept separate if you want a clean User Interface.

Re: Automatic Source Citations do not auto populate

If you have just created that first baptism Source for Auto Citation then you would have used the Create button on the left, as originally suggested by Lorna. Therefore, that first baptism Source is already in the Source Title box, and you don't need to find it at all in order to use Clone Source R...

Re: Automatic Source Citations do not auto populate

I agree it's do-able that way, Mike, but if I'm entering a series of baptisms, the source I want to clone is probably slap bang at the top of the Source Records pane (or bottom). Why should I need to select it again by using a drop-down list or going via that cog menu? The issue is not that it can't...

Re: Automatic Source Citations do not auto populate

OK - I've been trying it but it really is clunky now, for me. Suppose I want to clone a baptismal source record for the next child in the family. I copy it and add the new source record as an adjusted version of the old. No change. Previously, I then selected it, clicked on the tool for automatic ci...

Re: Recording Diary Entries

I suggest that you should think how you want to access the information that you are putting into FH. Do you think that you might want to pull off a list of all buying their first car events? Do you think you might want to pull off a list of all events when one of your relatives was wounded in battle...

Re: Multimedia not appearing in report

My only current thought about positioning pictures in a sensible position in a report from FH would be to stick some placeholder text into the note for the appropriate fact - part of the text would locate the multimedia needed at that point. Then, once the report has been produced, do some post-proc...

Even if you shrink the tree, lose the blank sheets and rearrange everything logically (probably impossible) the central problem remains. Can you understand a single diagram with 421 people on it? Yes, be careful you understand what the free bit is. Sometimes "free" means absolutely everything is free including all the answers in whatever form they come. Sometimes it means you can submit the enquiry for free, you get a basic list back for free but you pay to see the details. Sometimes payment...

Re: Missing Comment field when exporting from Ancestry to V5

I have no means of backing this up but I have a vague idea that the Comments on Ancestry are simply not exported onto the GEDCOM file. As Mike suggests, try looking for some distinctive text - but don't get your hopes up.

Re: Ancestry, FTM, FH and workflow

Thanks for your efforts Nick. Interesting - and depressing to see how poor FTM's understanding of a simple specification like GEDCOM is. (Yes, it is simple to an IT person). The reason things like promoting CAUS to level 1 depress me is that the level numbering system in GEDCOM is there for a purpos...

Do not even bother trying to directly download a GEDCOM from Ancestry, its format is so wrong it's a waste. The only viable way of getting stuff out of Ancestry on a GEDCOM is via a sync with FTM. I have no idea if anyone else syncs with Ancestry. Remember please that these APIs are generated for a ...

Re: A problem with names

As for the Source Record, you need to think about how the citations get printed. If your standard name is, say, Pickstock, but the form in the source is Pigstock, then a citation directing someone to look for the marriage of Oscar Pickstock in St Helens's register of 1812 is pretty useless if the te...
