Re: Rearrange address and place 1.7 errors

You are asking about tidying Place comma-separated parts regarding leading space characters. The usual convention is for the 1st part to have no leading space but to follow every comma with a single space. e.g. Town, County, State, Country That format can be obtained by running the Rearrange Address...

Re: Chart family lines

OK, so changing Generations Up/Down settings forces FH to rebuild the diagram and in doing so it avoids crossing lines.
There must be a fault in the diagram logic when extra relatives are added to a Saved Chart.

Re: Rearrange address and place 1.7 errors

Sorry about that John. It looks like it is something to do with the large number of Place records, because I get the same effect with a Project that has 26,000+ Place records. Smaller Projects with 3,000 Place records work fine. It should be possible to select the Place records in FH before running ...

Re: Chart family lines

Trevor is correct that the Ancestors & Descendants diagram is simpler because it only includes direct bloodline relatives and their spouses. The All Relatives diagram includes the more distant relatives as well.

Re: Adding sources without templates

Rosemary, you should never need to fill in the same form 7 times to add 7 people from one household. The popular approach is to use the FH Source options to Prepare a Citation for that household. All the relevant details including a link to the Census image are added to the Source record (not the Ci...

Re: Exporting Notes

I stand by what I said. Yes, the FH Export > GEDCOM File options allow a few structures to be excluded and a few converted to Notes. Most FH custom features remain as 'user-defined' GEDCOM tags with an underscore prefix to make them strictly valid GEDCOM but mostly unrecognised by other products. Th...

Re: Chart family lines

I wonder if it is some combination of the new relations you have added plus the Chart trying to keep the original layout. As an experiment, create a new Diagram with the same root and similar options to see if those crossing lines are avoided. Also, in the Chart, in Diagram Options, try changing Gen...

Re: Chart family lines

Can you provide a screenshot that displays much more of the Diagram so we can see the ends of all the lines and parents. What Chart option have you ...

Re: Chart family lines

Maureen, sorry, but I don't understand the problem. It is not clear what lines overlap. There are no overlapping lines shown in the screenshot. Below the screenshot, you say: "The two Main girls are shown attached to Ruth Whitethorn's line." But the screenshot shows them attached as children of Jeff...

Re: Exporting Notes

There are no prizes for using all the options, but it does illustrate how different products 'adjust' the GEDCOM specification. Initially, stick with the default settings automatically established by choosing the GEDCOM Destination option. If users find that does not satisfy their needs then they of...

Re: Moving from Family Tree Maker to Family Historian

Yes, that is a perfect example of the kind of layout that FH does not preserve. Even within the same FH session, retaining that layout is virtually impossible. CP have implemented some aspects of that Wish List and more layout settings are preserved now than when the Wish List request was created bu...

Re: Is there a 'Dead Flag'?

Mark, I agree there is that minor bug, but in practice, it is unlikely to seriously affect any exported GEDCOM files, because performing an export immediately after creating 'empty' Death events is not a common occurrence. Adrain, as Mark explained, if you open that Project in FH again and Save, the...

Re: Is there a 'Dead Flag'?

I have just performed some fairly exhaustive tests. FH seems to ignore anything following the 1 DEAT tag when importing so is tolerant to the Y case but does not remove Death facts without Y and without any subsidiary fields. FH always exports Death facts that have no subsidiary fields by using the ...

Re: Exporting Notes

Yes, it is quite a common tactic used by products to combine multiple Note instances into a single Note. In order to cater for the variety of GEDCOM customisations used by FH and most other products, it is better to use the plugin Export Gedcom File available from the Plugin Store rather than the na...

Lumpers with multiple Citations do NOT have to manually edit every duplicate copy.
Just edit one and then use the Citation Copy and Paste to update each copy and Delete the original.

See Wish List Ref 259 Method to find and edit identical citations and Vote for it.

Welcome to the FHUG. Re: Is there a 'Dead Flag'?

You, don't need to do anything to add/remove the Y following the DEAT tag because FH deals with that GEDCOM detail. (IMO it was confusing to call it the flag because it is not a FH Record Flag.) If concerned about how other products interpret GEDCOM then it is best to add a Death Event even without ...
