Re: Linux
If I understand correctly, and to summarise... To run Windows effectively in Linux within a Virtual Machine needs more RAM than running the same Windows version natively on the same hardware. So there is little if any benefit and you still need a Windows licence. Beware that there have been, and ma...

Re: Linux
I have an older laptop that runs Win10 poorly... Would Linux with an emulator speed it up? Appreciate any advice if a virtual machine or an emulator would help my speed issues. Linux on your laptop would likely transform it into a completely different machine (see caveats below). The resource deman...

Re: Problem Upgrading to AS7
Ditto on this issue under Windows 7 x64 - same issue; perfect normal routine, app will not start at all. .net libs installed. It installs and runs perfectly on Win10, just not Win7. Nick ...But it has been a different story with AS, first I tried to upgrade my present version to V7 everything appear...

Re: Linked errors with new media
Can and will followup with a report, Mike. Thanks for staying with it until a solution, or at least an explanation was found :) So, the workaround for me will be to try to remember to run the Validate function before I exit after adding these kinds of citations. I do run Validate as a routine every ...

Re: Linked errors with new media
What I cannot explain is why the _ASID numbers are getting upset in Joel's case, unless he is copy & pasting Citations but omitted to mention that. It's possible that's the case, but I don't recall. It would not be unusual for me to do so. That would explain the inconsistent nature of my experience...

Re: Linked errors with new media
Sorry Joel, I don't understand your description. Are you saying you have found the text draft-card-wwI-Paul-E-Turnell in the JPG image note field of its Properties? But then you call it the image description ? Then you say you just pasted the filename which is service-card-Paul-Edward-Turnell and n...

Re: Linked errors with new media
I wonder if you can inspect the service-card-Paul-Edward-Turnell.jpg image file to investigate its meta-data. (Perhaps inspect the original download rather than the FH Media copy that Validate may have modified.) Use an image editor such as IrfanView and use Image > Information > EXIF Info Or use F...

Re: Linked errors with new media
I wonder if the clue is in the Validation message referring to (draft-card-wwI-Paul-E-Turnell) ? Whereas the filename is service-card-Paul-Edward-Turnell.jpg Maybe there is some Meta-data or Tag in the image file that FH thinks disagrees with the Media Record . This may be related to the Tools > Pr...

Re: Linked errors with new media
Sorry, not sure what you mean about the screenshots being different. Apart from the text content; and that fact that I 'chopped off' the lower portion of the screen to focus more on the file path created they are identical. As far as the creation process: I just used the media 'screen' pictured bel...

Re: Linked errors with new media
I don't really have an answer for you, I only know that that the method I described auto-creates an absolute, rather than the usual relative, File Path. I'm open to any suggestions as to why this happens. Understood and appreciate your input. I'm unclear as to what method you are using add your med...

Created a Media Record in Family Historian as shown in the attachment. 3. Added the media image by navigating to...

Re: Linked errors with new media
Okay, today I attempted to replicate my previous issue by doing two different image attachments. First, I used Ancestral Sources to add a census entry and attached a newly downloaded image (saved to my ".../Media/census/" folder the same as before) . Upon saving the census entry, I reviewed the new ...

Re: Linked errors with new media
Yeah, it makes no sense to me. The path is permanently mapped with admin-level permissions and FH is obviously aware of it and okay with the path as an accessible drive for accessing project files and media. It's a conundrum...

Re: Linked errors with new media
Ah! I understand better now, thank you. I guess it might just be possible that is what Joel is experiencing, as he does not explicitly say that a relative Media\... path is registered initially. The File > Validation may be automatically performing that adjustment. Joel, what exactly is the media f...

Re: Linked errors with new media
To clarify my setup and paths, VM, etc. I am running FH under a Windows 7 VirtualBox VM. Virtualbox is running under my primary desktop, which is Linux KDE. All my genealogical and photo data is shared via a folder structure on a Network Attached Storage (NAS). That NAS folder is mapped to a drive i...

Linked errors with new media
I keep getting media errors when I Validate after uploading new media to existing records. An example is: I find a birth certificate for John Doe I download the certificate image and save it to my "bdm" subdirectory under FH media. I attach said image (using Show Media...Add Media for Citation) to t...

Re: Crossover/PlayonMac/Linux winhttp download problem
And, just to muddy the waters a bit more, here is a filelisting of a fresh, vanilla instance of a virtual Windows7 created with wine and POL.... winhttp.dll is already there and in SysWOW folders as well... ? My suspicion is that the default winhttp.dll does not work under wine and that POL/POM must...

Re: Crossover/PlayonMac/Linux winhttp download problem
As an aside, I just tried to install the W2KSP4_EN.EXE into a clean Windows 7 Wine instance and it failed with a "different hardware" error. During that process, it asked for a location to extract files. However, it removed all the extracted files once it failed. I suspect it does that no matter wha...

Re: Crossover/PlayonMac/Linux winhttp download problem
Firstly, I tried to follow the download link to the W2KSP4_EN.EXE installation file Joel mentioned and got redirected to the Wayback Machine where the download failed. Per discussion here , try ftp://ftp.fu-berlin.de/pc/security/ms-patches/win2000/Service_Packs/usa/W2KSP4_EN.EXE It works for me, ju...

Re: Crossover/PlayonMac/Linux winhttp download problem
Joel I suspect POM & POL actually downloads and installs winhttp permanently (or any of the other 500 or so addons) and enables them on first download. If they are then disabled I suspect that is all that happens not a deletion of the download. What the Wine config does is to enable the added libra...

Re: Crossover/PlayonMac/Linux winhttp download problem
So, I do not know exactly what the difference is/was, but when I installed the winhttp library using only the Wine config, it did not take as long as it did with the POL interface - I think maybe it was never fully downloaded. Using the POL interface, it downloaded the complete library file and the ...
