Re: Error with Export Gedcom File plugin
Camera is optional, as the user and helper don't need to see each other - I don't usually bother connecting mine if it's just a general presentation to a wide audience. All that matters here is the audio and screen share, which can be limited to just FH, not the entire desktop. The plugin author can...

Re: Error with Export Gedcom File plugin
We have a standing invite within our local FHS group for users with problems with particular software to reach out for a one-to-one Zoom session with somebody with relevant experience. I’ve not seen it used for plugin support yet, but it might be an option for this type of more obscure bug if the op...

Re: GRO BMD Index Citations
I think you are right. I tend to be allergic to fields that always have the same value (e.g. a census citation is only ever indirect evidence for birth), so why bother filling it in every time? If there is anything to discuss around a citation (e.g. quoted age at death is five years out but on balan...

Re: GRO BMD Index Citations
I’ll feed back observations on the new version later, but to comment on citation assessment, I think John is right to be cautious. IMO, there is not a valid set of values that could be sensibly defined as defaults for all sources and all facts. For example, an index entry could be argued as Direct a...

Re: Creating unique splitting-method source name
To clarify, FH does not require a unique source name, but I agree that the carbon-based life forms can keep track of them more easily if they are. I too prefer relatively short names rather than long essays, and my typical source title follows a What: When (year only) - Who, Where style. Typical exa...

Re: Some Media Records Missing From ISR
FH - it is an old 32-bit application that can never use more than about 3 GB of RAM, so it doesn't matter whether you PC has an i-9 CPU, shed loads of RAM and an M.2 PCIe SSD or a Pentium, 4 GB RAM and a mechanical HDD (it's faster, but can't cope with larger data sets). It would be nice if FH8 were...

Re: GRO BMD Index Citations
Gary - couple of points to clarify... You seem uncertain about the background to the various methods for accessing the England & Wales GRO Indexes. ONLY the GRO themselves have access to their original registers, no matter how old. That is a legal protection, and it would require primary legisla...

Re: GRO BMD Index Citations
Exactly - in principle, the GRO Indexes are one of the simplest sources going, but as you are now realising, there is huge variation on what details are available, depending on date and which version of the index it is - BMD’s crowd-sourced transcription of the printed index, a commercial transcript...

Re: Missing fact
This arises from a significant difference in design between RM and FH. FH takes as its starting point a strict adherence to GEDCOM. As a result, it distinguishes between Events (which generally have a date and place, but no value, such as Birth), Attributes (which generally have date, place, and val...

Re: Birth certificate not found at GRO England
Holborn is part of the London Borough of Camden, which also extends to much of the surrounding area, so it is likely that Peter was born within its modern boundaries. Checking online, they appear to refer all applications for copies of pre-1940 certificates to the GRO and no longer offer a search of...

Re: Birth certificate not found at GRO England
Welcome to FHUG, Eleanor. Have to checked both FreeBMD and the GRO’s own online catalogue, including spelling and name variations? They are independent compilations, so you need to check both. It might be worth also checking the local Registration Office for where he was born, just in case it was mi...

Re: Forcing rollback of changes
Would it work to require that the project is saved before running, copy the GEDCOM file and save it back before closing? However, it's a bit of a kludge and don't force the user to reload the GEDCOM.

Re: Record window anomaly
Columns displayed as item data (Records) update dynamically, but text and numerical data don’t. It creates a limitation in using either plugins or built-in menu options to tabulate detailed data (such as source citations) to check for consistency or omissions, as the display has to be regenerated wh...

Re: Record window anomaly
The challenge in drafting a new Wish List item will be to recognise that output from either plugins or FH menu options can never be completely consistent with Query or Record Window displays, as the latter are fully dynamic and reflect changes in the underlying data, while the former are largely sta...

Re: Record window anomaly
I think Lorna's interpretation is correct. In fact, that is the method usually advised here for sorting on multiple columns - sort in order, least significant first, and the previous sequence is maintained. Tested by sorting on birth place, which is in the middle of my records window, then by death ...

Re: ODBC error with Ancestry Synchronization
Thanks for that. There isn't anything in particular that sticks out as a likely cause. I didn't ask where your default Project Folder is located, but it might be worth checking if the problem still occurs if you locate the RM file in the Public subfolder within your project folder. If that doesn't f...

Re: Essential source templates not to standard?
Agree - these simple citations are all that’s required . Remember that the primary purpose of a citation is to identify where the source was/can be obtained for verification. It is not for reproducing the contents of the source. Simple versus detailed citations is a choice of personal style and pref...

Re: ODBC error with Ancestry Synchronization
That's an odd one. It is suggesting that the error is with the fhSQL library that processes the RM file, but it's not one I've seen before. Is this the first time you have used the plugin, or has it worked normally up until now? If it has suddenly stopped working, has anything changed on your system...

Re: Check for Unlinked Media
Another option for this type of change is to edit the GEDCOM file directly using a plain text editor (even Windows Notepad is fine) once you have changed the actual file names. It's only suitable if there is a distinct string that doesn't occur elsewhere in your project. In my case, all my 1939 Medi...

Re: Adding a Repository to multiple sources
Your background sounds similar to mine - BASIC on the HP85 (anybody else remember those?) and SQL for an Oracle database in the 1980s, then Access/VBA, all as incidental elements of a technology R&D career, plus some largely self-taught C/C++ for fun to dabble with a “proper” language using the ...

Re: Adding a Repository to multiple sources
You've left one question unanswered - this type of plugin is how most authors start. It's only a handful of lines, and a good introduction to the basics. The plugin help gives a very readable introduction, and if you have VBA experience, you're partway there already. Any enthusiasm for dipping a toe...

Note also that the Short Footnote is grossly inadequate if you have two people with the same name, of course! Dates and places presumably ought to appear there as well. Re: Essential source templates not to standard?
I take a “necessary and sufficient” approach, rather than following an arbitrary standard, with a limited Source Title (what, when, who, where) followed by a transcript of the key text. GRO Birth Certificate: 1869 - Arthur Poole, Ranton, Staffordshire 17 Sep 1869 - Ranton, Arthur, Boy, f = (blank), ...
