Re: Potential Probate Plugin

I was about to make the same comment. I think it is perfectly reasonable to make speculative and/or prototype plugins available via a FHUG link. After a reasonable time (6-12 months max?), it would be better to upload a finished version to the store, provided that the author is prepared to support i...

Re: FH -> RootsMagic -> Ancestry (Work-in-Progress)

Do you have any unnamed individuals in your FH project? If so, either mark them as private so they are excluded or give them a temporary placeholder name. Does that prevent the error?

They are not multiple individuals, but multiple relationships.

They indicate that the same person is linked in different ways, usually by relatives marrying.

Re: My Heritage Data Subscription

There has been a recent change to UK law, whereby customers renewing an insurance policy must be offered the same terms as are available to new customers.

Perhaps we should have the same for genealogy sites to avoid the annual cycle of haggling renewal terms… :)

Re: Casting template data as a particular data-type

To clarify Mark's comment, FH does support the yyyy-mm-dd ISO format I must be missing something here. You have “clarified” my statement that FH does not support ISO dates by asserting that it does, then explaining in the very next sentence why it doesn’t… For the avoidance of doubt, FH does not su...

Re: Casting template data as a particular data-type

The glaring omission in FH date handling is the lack of built-in support for the yyyy-mm-dd ISO format, which was designed precisely to get around these ambiguities (and is the only common format that also sorts correctly as text). Check the search for previous discussions.

Re: My Heritage Data Subscription

We are not allowed to give an opinion on the commercial practices of another company, so I won’t… However, it does look like My Heritage are promoting their wares at the moment. At least one other major genealogy app currently has a (slightly different) unique offer, which also makes the comparison ...

Re: Importing charts into a word document

I was curious to see how far I could push this. This is one box in the pdf file at maximum zoom. It’s still pin-sharp, so it appears that the pdf file treats it as vector graphics as well with no loss of quality when zooming.

You can even have it without the active record being highlighted - just click in a blank area of the chart prior to saving to cancel the selection, which I forgot to do! :D

Re: Importing charts into a word document

Family Historian charts are not conventional image files, but what's called Vector Graphics. All that means is the file simply contains instructions on where the lines and text are located, rather than having to describe every pixel of the resulting image. As a result, the image is always displayed ...

Re: Some Repositories Missing from Records Window

Personally, I can’t see the point of having a Repository field in a Templated Source when there is an existing Generic field that serves exactly the same purpose. I only use my own custom templates, but I never have a Repository field and just use the Generic version (you can customise the Property ...

Mk I versions with iup.GetParam and iup.Alarm, as these are well-documented in the plugin help. Later upgraded to “proper” UI’s once I became more comfortable with iuplua.

I use Notepad++ extensively for proofreading - usually annotating a Notepad++ derived pdf on the iPad with my feet up on the sofa :D. Visual Studio Code and ZeroBrane sometimes feature with pro/ex-pro developers, but I’m happy with what I use for my basic plugins.

Re: GRO Source Reference plugin

I’d not looked at the Store author list before. Around half the names were unfamiliar to me, and don’t have any plugins listed.

Presumably, they were contractors employed by CP at various times that have not been deleted from the system?

Re: GRO Source Reference plugin

Welcome to the club - getting the UI right can be a challenge, as iuplua is often very unforgiving, and bring FH down if the syntax isn't quite right :(. Once I twigged that "all" it does is call standard Windows API controls, using Lua tables to store their properties, things became a lit...

Re: Templates: Input form labels

Thanks Gary, a useful illustration. I think I've moved from sceptic to agnostic ;), as it's not something I feel I would use or need, but I can see a potential place for it for those who prefer tightly defined templates and citations without disrupting things for the rest of us.

Re: GRO Source Reference plugin

It's interesting comparing the Plugin Store and FHUG KB. They are both WordPress sites with broadly similar editing processes, but the latter has a far more polished feel about it, principally from the work done by Colin Spencer and Helen Wright to design and build suitable templates. The Plugin Sto...

Re: Expression guidance please

Mike is correct in identifying that the USA part is duplicated, but you may find his explanation slightly confusing. The root cause is differences between how Ancestry and FH store and process names. Ancestry has a fixed USA-style Given - Surname - Suffix format for names (e.g. John Doe III). When i...

Re: Templates: Input form labels

My instinct is that would add unnecessary complexity to template design and UI. We can already specify field name, data type, sequence, and a short prompt, and adding to that (and a longer pop-up description as per cited Wish List item) wouldn’t be a priority for me.

Re: Question about scope of records handled by A.S.

Check out the Authors' Area in the Store. CP actively encourage overlapping plugins, in order to give users a choice of UI styles, options, scope, etc. All plugin submissions have to be approved by Store admin, but they are checked for malicious code only, not for function. Any accompanying help doc...

Unfortunately, FH plugins are quite constrained in being able the manage lists and their membership. If that improves in the future, I’ll be able to set it up more flexibly.
