Re: Version 6 tutorials
I know what you mean! I moved from FTM and had a tricky few weeks while I learned the different way things work. Now that I've got my head round FH6 and added in some of the excellent plugins, I'd never go back. I rarely pop in here these days - I'm too busy researching and logging stuff. Persevere ...

Re: Burial date anomaly in Focus window?
As Mike says. I work on the basis that a burial is not going to be more than 4 weeks after the death/cremation unless there are very specific reasons. In the absence of other information, I put circa and the burial year as the year of death. I've not had any problems with that (so far).

Re: Given Name showing as Surname
Thanks, Mike. That explains it. Isn't this GEDCOM linguistics fun! I'm not going to worry too much for this session, since FH6 gets it right. I'll have a go at a Custom Query later, but may do it with the tactic that I know well - PFE32 to edit the .GED file, and delete any lines with # SURN Elizabe...

Re: Tasks list
I fell at the first hurdle:
Back to the instruction manual...
Meanwhile, the Excel sheet is ready for next week's session at the Record Office.
My copy of FH6 hasn't got "Tools > Work with Fact Sets".Use Tools > Work with Fact Sets and click the New button:
Back to the instruction manual...

I think the fire, flood, etc risks are pretty well catered for. Even the burglary one is covered!
I'll report to Calico Pie.

Given Name showing as Surname
I suspect it's an old problem from a prior software package, but I'm seeing numerous examples of a strange muddling of Given names and Surnames in cases where the individual Surname is not (yet) known. For example: I have a lady known as Mary Ann, surname N/A. Up to now, I have left surnames blank f...

Re: Searching the FHUG site
Now here's a curious thing: I just did a search for "Windows 10 fact" and it found the above post and highlighted all three words: http://jillings.org/fhugsearch.jpg It said it was ignoring Windows 10, but as you see it didn't! I administer some phpBB sites elsewhere and have not come across any pro...

Re: Backup not responding
Indeed, Mike, the size information is from right-clicking "A:\FH6Backup\FH Project Backup (min) - Jillings 2015 - 2015-07-18 1210.zip" which shows as 601,665 KB. The contents of that Zip should be virtually the same as the contents of my robocopy backup at "A:\FHBU20150723" which is 591,967 KB. I've...

Backup not responding
I'm having a variant of the problem reported in this topic. When I click "Backup" at the end of a session, there is an almost immediate "Adding files to backup", with reference to File 1 of N. Very soon after that comes the "Not responding" label on the backup window. There it sits for a while. It m...

Tasks list
In some of the previous packages I've used, there was a "Tasks List" feature. If a question arose while working on an individual record or adding data, I could log that question to be investigated when I next visit the relevant record office, church, etc. The software would keep those, with priority...

Re: Auto import of image metadata
I've not been doing anything with EXIF data in FH6, but I have found elsewhere that looking at the "source" code in the file may reveal what is causing a problem. If you look at the source of the EXIF data in the photographs, can you see any obvious differences between Windows and Photoshop versions...

Re: Should I Upgrade to v6? What Problems Might I Expect?
An added thought: there's a 30-day free trial of FH6. You don't get plugins, but everything else works. It's not "crippled" like the trial versions of some others (which I thus didn't get to try and therefore didn't buy). 30 days should give you a good insight into what it can do. Keep your FH4 file...

Re: Should I Upgrade to v6? What Problems Might I Expect?
I can't comment on FH4.1 because apart from a brief trial many years ago, I've only recently come to FH6 "fresh" from a stack of problems with FTM and Legacy. I had some "excitement" converting the imported GEDCOM file from Legacy to the format FH6 liked, and then even more "fun" getting stuff to di...

Re: Importing from Legacy
Ian - the plugin does indeed do what Mike says. I've been there! In the meantime, until you've registered, use Notepad (or whatever is your preference), and in that GEDCOM file, where it shows FILE C:\Users\Ian\...\AlbertWalkdenfamily1901Census.jpg and then FILE C:\Users\Ian\...\AlbertWalkdenfamily1...

Re: Follow user instructions on file locations
Looks good to me, Mike. I probably won't bother to relocate the Calico Pie folders on mine since they are very small. If they start to "churn", I may change my mind :) In changing the Family Historian Projects folder location, rather than using Windows/File Explorer to move it from My Documents to i...

Re: Importing from Legacy
The disconnect between Legacy GEDCOM and FH6 GEDCOM bit me, too. The same "line length change" fixed most of the Notes imports, apart from the notes against marriages. There is a Plugin that sorted those without further ado. I also had a similar experience to Ian, in that the count of media files in...

Re: Importing Marriages from Legacy
Give me time, Mike. I've changed from FTM (memory leak that caused crashes) to Legacy 8 to FH6 this year. The three use different names for the various events, data fields, and so on. I just use the generic name such as "Birth", "Baptism", "Marriage" etc. I appreciate there are FH6-specific names fo...

Re: Importing Marriages from Legacy
Well, that was easy! It took about 20 minutes in total, using Notepad. Within the GED file section starting @F1@ FAM 1. Find all 2 OBJE @O and change to 1 OBJE @O That triggered 14 errors where the 2 OBJE was followed by 2 CONT - all of which were text about the marriage, not referring to the media ...

Re: Importing Marriages from Legacy
Thanks, Lorna. No, I wasn't looking for the marriage media to appear against the individuals, only against the marriage. It's really a case of knowing that I have a copy of the marriage certificate (or whatever) when I'm working at the relevant church/record office. FTM and Legacy both showed it. At...

Re: Importing Marriages from Legacy
Understood, Mike. I didn't count the clicks, but I didn't go that way anyway. I find it confusing to have a "Media" box against the marriage with a message "No media", when in fact there are media. That box works with individuals, so ideally I'd like it to work with marriages too. I looked in the GE...

Re: Importing Marriages from Legacy
Yes, that summarises it well, Mike. For all except marriages, all data appear where they should. The Marriage Notes are sorted - they appear in the Facts tab against the relevant marriage: the information pops up when needed. The plugin did the job admirably. The Media (mostly copies of marriage cer...

When you got to the last screen you have shown, the Select Linked Media box with all the options ticked, did you then click OK in that box? Did the main Multimedia window open? All media linked in any way to the record should be listed in the left hand panel and displayed in thumbnail size in the m...

Re: Importing Marriages from Legacy
Thank you, Lorna. Yes, that shows that the Media are linked to the individual records and not lost. It does what you say, up to the point of "select View Media Linked to this Record in Media Window make sure the option for Associated Events/Facts is ticked." That doesn't make the images display, alt...
