Re: Windows 11
There are two keyboard issues which may bear on John's problem. Some keyboards have a gaming setting which disconnects some of the traditional Windows functions. The other potential problem is the function-key BIOS setting on some laptops. This switches the upper row of function keys from their Wind...

Thank you both. The little chart (still in development) will be a boon for the under-ten set of second cousins.

Given names or nicknames only
I've got a big family reunion coming up, the first one ever. Children, as yet unacquainted with one another, will be present. I'd like to make a diagram whose boxes will contain a photo and the person's nickname if there is one, given name if not. No text other than the name is wanted. Can it be don...

Possible knowledge base misprint
I am studying the article on setting up directory junctions at https://fhug.org.uk/kb/kb-article/synchronizing-family-historian-settings-using-directory-junctions/. In paragraph 4 it says, "Move the C:\ProgramFiles\Calico Pie\Family Historian\Plugins folder to sit underneath the new folder created i...

Re: Witness role sentence problem
Dear Mike, Thanks so much. I've voted. Here's the version I've settled on, for the moment at least: <{role(plural)=child}><{role(single)=child}> lived with {couple} <at {address}>< in {=TextIf (ContainsText(%FACT.PLAC%, "Bronx", STD), "the Bronx", %FACT.PLAC%)}> {date}{note} It seems to do the job a...

Witness role sentence problem
This sentence works perfectly for two or more children but not for one. It's a witness sentence for the role "child" <{role(plural)=child}, lived with their parents><{role(single)=child} lived with {=TextIf(%CUR~WITN>SEX% = "Male","his","her")} parents>, <at {address}> {place} {date}<{note}> Here is...

When I open the Workspaces preferences window I do not see the citation list controls at the bottom (below the Disable Property Box Management and Restore Defaults button).
What settings control that display?

Re: Establish a 'Partners' event
Thank you, Mike. Some time ago, under your tutelage I had used {=CombineText( "became the ", GetLabelledText( %FACT.NOTE2%, "Relationship: " ), " of", "married" )} {spouse/her/him} to provide an means of getting appropriate sentences for unmarried domestic partners. I thought I might simplify matter...

Establish a 'Partners' event
If I establish a new family event called "Partners" with appropriate sentence templates and roles will FH7 treat the couple exactly as if they had married and I had used the marriage event?

Re: Unknown Relations
I've found a technique for unknown maiden names which seems to work well with FH. I use the husband's surname enclosed in brackets, thus: [Cooper]. I add "Mrs." as the name prefix which clarifies the relationship in reports. The bracketed names sort at the beginning of the list in the project window...

One of the common offenders in this regard is PxHlpa64.sys. It is a Corel driver which was installed on my machine as part of the Adobe Photoshop Elements/Premier package. In Windows 11 it is found in C:\Windows\System32\drivers. I have no idea what the file's function is. One internet posting sugge...

Re: Alternate and Alternative
The Chicago Manual of Style , which is the Bible in my world, is silent on alternate/alternative, but Dreyer’s English (the Book of Common Prayer as it were) tells us that, “strictly speaking, an alternate is a thing that replaces a thing, and alternatives — which travel in packs, or at least pairs ...

Re: how related -- does one have to be "Root"?
You may have to swap the first person & second person when the How Related screen pops up. There's a button for the purpose. Then the first person can be selected to be whomever you wish.

Re: Difference between {note} and {inline-note}?
If you are using FH7, the latest release, Find & replace will do them all in one fell swoop. You can also change the template fact settings in the fhf files in C:\Program Data\Calico Pie\Family Historian\Fact Types. Use Notepad for the latter. There are two, perhaps three, fhf files which contain se...

Re: Difference between {note} and {inline-note}?
The fix for Calico Pie's alteration of the {note} code is a global find and replace: <{note}> in place of <. {note}> . The underlying sentence templates can be changed en masse using Notepad on the .fhf files in C:\ProgramData\Calico Pie\Family Historian\Fact Types. I have done this for my project (...

Re: LOOKUP MISSING CENSUS FACTS
Have used it sporadically over the last two days. I can't claim more than six or seven uses (with connection to Ancestry.com), but encountered no problems — other than with census takers who can find six ways to spell "Madeleine" and who probably couldn't cope with "Rishi Sunak" at all. It's a wonde...

Re: Report Writer font formats
Dear Mike, Thank you. I feared that that was the case. Alas, the FH7 RTF report conversion displays exhibits above the text rather than inline. I use LibreOffice rather than Word. It’s possible to write a macro which will do the <i> conversion to italics more or less automatically. That would leave ...

Report Writer font formats
The FH7 report writer honors italicization, bolding, and underlining when they appear in notes, but apparently it isn’t possible to get such formats into tag fields or exhibit captions. For example, I have a number of of ship photographs whose names should be displayed as, say, RMS Aquitanita. I hav...

I have a distant relative by marriage — a Great War veteran — who died at sea a few years after the war. He may have been a suicide. The family had an ordinary headstone with name and dates erected in a Massachusetts cemetery.

Wonderful! Thanks to both of you. Now that the 1950 U.S. census is coming on line, there's lots to do. Any streamlining of the process is vy welcome.
Thanks again.
