Re: Any one coming to Rootstech?

I thought that I might manage one day - but I too am staggered by the cost.
Sorry to miss you, Jane
I first got an offer last April but, being elderly, one never knows for sure how things will be that far ahead.

Re: Anyone else having problems with fH?

I just tested a short fh Individual Narrative Report for you which quickly saved and opened in MS Word - first page blank but that is no worry. The reason I ran the test is that my old Windows 7 computer to which I am much attached and which cant be upgraded to W10 has been struggling when Word is i...

Re: GedMatch custom query ^Gedmatch

Yes Mike. It looks like it. But I dont know why I couldnt create one the same by writing in the correct data reference. Not worth worrying about. As DNA not my main concern just now.

GedMatch custom query ^Gedmatch

Jane, Please forgive me. I accidentally edited and saved your query for something quite different. The columns as you designed them are still intact but I have failed to rewrite your row to add people if the Gedmatch fact is present. I have an empty result set and cant for the life of me see what I ...

Re: All addresses in an area

I am rather slow at understanding techniques in fh. Is a query always better?

Why should one not simply use the binocular text search?
Tho I see on my project that search also brings up Kentish Town and Kent in Washington USA.

Best size for a project

Is it a good thing to run large projects? And if so how large?

How large is the average one name study?

I currently have 4 place projects with a total of 11,146 people.

Re: Umlauts and accents

A belated thank you. And for the detailed guidance. I will look carefully at the information about place name variants. I have paid little attention to Places. Mike - I looked out the correspondence with Calico Pie about my Windows 10 Lenovo touch screen lap top - many adjustments were made to my se...

Umlauts and accents

Calico Pie explained that on my little touch screen Windows 10 lap top the normal fh action of holding the key down to get accented letters would not work. But it doesnt seem to work when I write a place name into queries using my desktop Windows 7 either. Have I set an option wrongly somewhere? Thi...

Re: Can Family Historian be simplified?

Jacqueline, please dont be put off. I was just like you and couldnt understand the screen because I could never remember the names of all the windows offered to me. However, if you want to, you can use fh just like a conventional program you are used to. The Focus window shows a man and his wife and...

Re: I Quit FH for TMG

I am in my late 70s and moved to fh regardless. I have had endless patient help on this forum and using a text based software has been simpler for me. I too had dated UK census events. They were standard in the UK edition of TMG. But I had entered the Year in the date field. I have now put in the fu...

Re: Add a new source

Thank you all so much. I found the Add menu solution directly after posting and was going to post to apologise. I had a blank moment.
But I didnt know the right click method in the sources list (which is where I was) so thank you for that, Mike.

Add a new source

Is it possible in fh to add a new source record without connecting it to a previously created person, event or attribute? When I receive an email about family history I like to add it with its text to my genealogy software. I have just had an email that relates to a family with the same surname but ...

Re: Comparing trees without merging them

Output a full report from each tree, (avoiding narrative sentences) and save both as MS Word documents. Then using Word, one can compare two documents?

I did that once when sent a text report. I am not an expert tho.

Re: Flagging a DNA Match?

Jane, I am glad this topic has come up again. I use this method. Thank you for designing it. However there are times when I may want to record a Match's link to a particular branch or surname but dont know the precise link. I find this arises in two ways on ancestry. 1. A surname search through my m...

Re: More query help please

They only have one census event in that town. Because this is a place study.
But you are right, there might be women with more than one husband. That will affect both rows and columns.

Re: More query help please

Thank you Mike. You have provided for proper family historians. Since I am looking at only one town in one particular census my needs are much narrower. I have snipped an image of my rows but clearly am not very expert at editing snips to remove the town name. I dont seem to have my wits about me to...

Re: More query help please

Mike, that is so kind of you and a brilliant help. I didnt understand that it was so complicated. Your query is better as divorced husbands may be elsewhere in the same town...

Re: More query help please

Mike I am looking at only one census. I need to single out by a particular town. I have already, through an individual query, included only people with a census entry for that date and that place. I dont have witnesses at all. I have not used ancestral sources in these place studies. My method in th...

More query help please

Mike kindly coached me in fact queries. i.e. queries that allow an individual to be listed more than once. But I seem a bit lost with individual queries. I would like to find married women with children in the census household but whose husbands are not listed in the same census household. That may ...

Re: Search and Replace Plugin Revision

Thank you. That is very clear. I needed that upward arrow symbol. The simple way is to start with the 1939 Register because there is only a single source for that- whereas different routes to the German one changing over the years. I do have people who are on both censuses - but for those peope I en...
