Re: Quick Link Creator

FYI: The Plugin tries to read the Window Registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\FH.exe in order to find the installation path, and if not found the earlier version 'whined', but the later version tries the default path and thus will work OK. Thanks, Mike...

Re: Quick Link Creator

Teri, can you give more details about how the Plugin 'whined' and what path details are involved. Sure. When I ran the plug-in, I got the error message Family Historian not found! The path to the Family Historian executable is C:\Program Files (x86)\Family Historian\Program\FH.exe I wonder if FH ne...

Re: Entering St. in a Name

(My long lost schoolboy french says dit means 'say' :D ) That's it, in nutshell. It's kind of an alias or an a.k.a., tacked onto a family surname. They were very common among the settlers in Nouvelle France in the 17th century. Many of the settlers initially came as soldiers, and French soldiers ty...

Re: Entering St. in a Name

For those of us with French-Canadian forebears, this is also a good way to handle "dit" names. For example, entering Gilles /Couturier dit Labonté/ ensures that Gilles will be alphabetized under Couturier, where he belongs, rather than Labonté, where he would otherwise wind up.

Re: Quick Link Creator

Thanks for sharing, Jane. This will be a handy way to pick up where I left off. The plug-in, as written, whined about not being able to find my Family Historian executable – don't know why not, since it was installed in the default place – but I hardcoded the path and it works like a champ. ;) – Teri

Re: Search and Replace on a Named List (or Similar)

Thanks, Mike. I'm pondering the advice you've already offered: …. Guess it could clone the old Place record into a new Place record that only differs in its name. Then link that new Place record to each Place field that matches the criteria. It must keep track of all the old and new Place names and ...

Re: Search and Replace on a Named List (or Similar)

Mike and Jane, Thanks for the information. Those are pretty much what I figured my options were; I just wanted to make sure I wasn't overlooking something obvious. Mike's option 1 will take care of some of the Facts I want to update – those Place records referenced only by Facts found by the Query, ...

Search and Replace on a Named List (or Similar)

Is there a way to run the Search and Replace plugin on a subset of the FH database? For example, is it possible to run Search and Replace on just the items in a Named List? Here's what I want to do: For the events that occurred in Canada prior to 1763, I want to change the place "Canada" to "Canada ...

Re: Useful in US?

Although Calico Pie is based in the UK, I don't think there's anything about the software that would make it cumbersome to record information about people from elsewhere in the world. Most of my research involves records in Michigan, Ohio, New York (in English), and Québec (in French). Family Histor...

Another solution to a problem I didn't know I had! Very helpful for displaying the place records in my database that need tidying up. Thanks!

Re: Double-barrelled first names

Ditto, Peter (D'oh! Should have thought of that one myself!) In fact, I didn't realize I had that problem until you brought it up. Many of my French-Canadian forbears have similarly double-barreled first names — Jean Baptiste, François Xavier, Marie Reine, and the like. And Mike, thanks for solving ...

Re: Moving Media to Sub-folders

Thanks, all, for explaining how to move media files into subfolders. I had been dumping everything into the Media folder, and it had accumulated over 1000 files. I was thinking I would do well to shuffle the files into subfolders, but it sounded like an ugly job, so I kept putting it off. Turns out ...

Re: Is V5 to V6 upgrade worthwhile?

Not to pile on BillH's reply, but I'm in the US and find Ancestral Sources invaluable, especially for entering census data. I suppose you could say that Family Historian is UK-centric, but I have no family from the UK. Support for witnesses is just as useful for my family from Québec and the United ...

Re: Is V5 to V6 upgrade worthwhile?

As you say, the utility of a major software upgrade depends on how you, personally, use the software. For me, V6 was all about the mapping features. Even if it's not perfect, it gives me a new way to visualize the information in my database. I was really looking for something like that. For me, the ...

Re: Pictures causing V6 to crash

I just installed FH 6.0.3, and spent about an hour adding media to events, and places, and people, adding face links, switching back to the focus window or records window, and generally doing the kinds of things that would previously, eventually, have got it to crash. No problemo. I am cautiously op...

Re: Pictures causing V6 to crash

I've seen a similar crash, but hesitated to report it because I couldn't reproduce it reliably. Most often I was adding frame links to media records. When I left the media window (either by closing it, or leaving it open and going back to the focus window or records window), FH would crash. My Windo...
