Re: Migration from PAF to FH5

Mike, good morning from an overcast Brisbane this Sunday morning. I'm comfortable with your use of the term Note Labels or Note Tags as long as we are consistent in our usage, which PAF was not. Coming from an IT background I prefer to use underscore or camel case rather than hyphens when using mult...

Re: Migration from PAF to FH5

Good morning Mike In the Import from Personal Ancestral File (PAF) page you mention upgrading to the latest version of PAF. The latest version of PAF, v5.2 from memory, was retired in 2013. While it is no longer available from the FamilySearch.org web site it may still be found on some other sites. ...

Re: Migration from PAF to FH5

Hi Mike, Thanks for the prompt reply, and it was along the lines of what I expected. I used the PAF label NEWSPAPER but this issue could apply to any of the labels used within the PAF notes. I can't speak for others but I have more than a few instances. Rather than tie up a scarce resource (yourself...

Re: Migration from PAF to FH5

Good morning all Having re-established communications with my computer again I spent a few hours yesterday investigating the converted gedcom. Overall, I like what I see. I do have a request, which if it can be accommodated, would round out this plugin but I'm not sure that it is feasible. Imagine s...

Re: Migration from PAF to FH5

Good morning/evening all First, my apologies for the short absence from the group but I had a computer problem that had to be sorted. Mike, I downloaded the plugin then 'installed' it - no problem. When I selected 'Run' the screen went quiet for a few seconds then a dialog box was displayed. Problem...

Re: Migration from PAF to FH5

Good evening all Mike, re your suggestion of Unmarried Couple or Never Married. I did a quick bit of research and think I will select the Unmarried Couple option for my records. It seems to me that a PAF note might be a little more complex than first thought. It seems that a PAF note has a structure...

Re: Migration from PAF to FH5

Good afternoon from a damp Brisbane this Sunday afternoon Despite the damp conditions it has been a partially successful afternoon. I spent some time checking the operation of the plugin and understanding finer points of FH operation and data storage. I'm still happy with how everything has gone. I ...

Re: Migration from PAF to FH5

Mike You queried PAFs treatment of a divorce. On the marriage screen there is a Divorced tick box which gives the following gedcom. 0 @F6@ FAM 1 _UID 7B8C87D8CCDBD411BD36000000000000E57A 1 DIV Y 1 HUSB @I980@ 1 WIFE @I5@ 1 CHIL @I10222@ 1 MARR 2 DATE 26 Apr xxxx 2 PLAC xxxx And when entering notes f...

Re: Migration from PAF to FH5

Good morning all from a warm but cloudy Brisbane this Saturday morning Mike, congratulations on the plugin... Last night I made a copy of my project then downloaded and 'installed' the plugin. When I ran the plugin it identified a whole bunch of incorrect tags. These were predominantly pieces of tex...

Re: Migration from PAF to FH5

Morning all,

No problems Mike.

Do you have enough information or (most likely) is there a question or two that I have not answered yet?

I'm looking forward to seeing the plugin when it is unveiled. Would you like a sample PAF gedcom to experiment with?

J.

Re: Migration from PAF to FH5

Good morning all from an overcast Brisbane Mike, in your post of 15:02 yesterday you said that certain events, such as birth, could only occur once. In Scotland it seems that it is possible for an event, primarily births, to be registered several times. From what I have seen the child will be regist...

Re: Migration from PAF to FH5

Good morning all Mike, I think you now understand the gist of the problem. In answer to your last question a PAF note may contain any number of PAF labels. These may be in any order and may occur more than once. There is no inbuilt sequencing - once defined a label may occur may times. In the PAF en...

Re: Migration from PAF to FH5

Mike, I (and presumably others) will often have more than one PAF tag per event, eg. multiple marriages and multiple census entries, and even birth/death details followed by an RCE (Register of Corrected Entries) entry so the plugin should be able to cater for them. Would I be on the right path in t...

Re: Migration from PAF to FH5

Good morning all First, thank you to Mike for his modification of my initial plugin script. I shall have a detailed look at the script once I finish this message. Mike/Jane: While I cannot vouch for every installation of PAF5, those that I have seen all seem to follow the same pattern, ie. a single ...

Re: Migration from PAF to FH5

I have started to put some thoughts to paper on how (I suspect) a suitable plugin should work. Your comments and guidance would be welcome. MoveToFirstRecod INDI do while not EOF if INDI has a NOTE then save Note in table (one pair per paragraph) for each table pair if pair(i,v) begins with "BIRTH:"...

Re: Migration from PAF to FH5

Good morning Jane PAF notes are held against an individual and each note contains a number of tags. This is just one sample from my gedcom (I try to structure my source notes). 1 NOTE BIRTH: SCO Birth 18611 041/00 37 2 CONT Helen Macleod 2 CONT Born: 7th March 1861 2h am at Bardnaclavan 2 CONT Fathe...

Migration from PAF to FH5

Having just converted from PAF5 to FH5 (and used the UDF plugin to identify unknown tags) I would like to ask the forum if anyone has developed a plugin that completes the migration, ie. extracts paragraphs from the single PAF5 NOTE statement, identifies the event, then saves the paragraph in the ap...
