Re: 1939 Register labelled as Census - why?

I prefer to call it Electoral Register. I would like to add here that this was used to create the NHS list of names when it was formed in 1948

Re: Census Template

When I come across a USA census on Ancestry I save it in a folder named say US census with subfolders for the year. I then go onto FH and the named person and use AS to download it to FH

It works fine with me

Re: Check For Possible Duplicate Media (FH7) plugin - first prototype

All my media are stored in separate folders under a main folder titled 'Family information' When I work on FH I import the appropriate folder using 'Add media' then chose either 'link to exisiting media record' to see if the media is there. If not then I do 'insert from file' that is the file where ...

If you open the Tools on top of FH the firdt item states 'how related' this will tell you your family connection. If there is no connection it will say so

Re: Finding the County for a list of Towns

When it comes to Yorkshire always use East, WEst or North Yorkshire but now there is South Yorkshire. There are similar place names in different partsa of the county like Hessle (near Hull in East Yorkshire and Hessle (near Wakefield in West Yorkshire. Also Scalby (near Scarbaorough) in North Yorksh...

Re: Death certificate research question

Just bear in mind not every certificate arrived at the GRO. If nothing is listed you can check UKBMD where many places have had the local register transcribed. Certificates from this list are from the local registry office and the list gives a bit more detail than the GRO list. Certificates from loc...

Re: census images

I save the first image under the name of the head of the family (e,g say Alan Brown). Then the4 second under the different head of the family (say Tony Brown)
This is in addition of the census title. I also add lines (say red) round each family before saving the images

When it comes to place names use the correct information. Leeds for example is in West Yorkshire not just Yorkshire. There is Hessle in East Yorkshire as well as West Yorkshire. There is also Scalby in North Yorkshire as well as East Yorkshire. Never miond about Yorkshire. Whatever the place name an...

Re: Birth certificate not found at GRO England

There is an alternative to FreeBMD. It is UKBMD this is lists details from the local register office. For a marriage it lists where the marriage took place (Register Office or name of church) UKBMD gives a reference number for ordering the certificate from the local register office. This certificate...

For me I have a folder under Family History Projects called 'family information' in this folder I have loads of separate folders called by the different surnames. Under each surname I have separate folders for each family member. That works well with me

Re: Birth and Birth Registration

When I have a birth certificate I don't bother with the registration. There are two forms of registraions. The fgirst is the local register office nand the second the GRO. The local registration officer has an exact copy of the certificate, which is why it is only in black and white. The GRO certifi...

Thanks Nick
I have updated my copy.
Just one question about witnesses. This comes up when I use death certificate. These certificates don't list witnesses (at least I have never seen any listed)
Maybe this bit could be removed?

I always stick to the old county boundaries. The changes in boundaries are really administration boundaries. To me the old boundaries still exist. also if you see 2 places of the same name but different text you can merge them to the correct text An example is Hessle, Yorkshire, England with another name Hessle, East Yorkshire, England The East Yorkshire description is the correct one. So merge them both and accept the later as the correct one...

Re: Births Index template for AS?

There are times when Ancestry give the GRO details in a transcribed format in a few rows like
Year and quarter
Place registered
Vol No
Page No.

I do a screen shot of this and copy it to the media folder of the person concerned. This suits me. If I do get a certifcate I add this later via AS
