Free gedcoms
No problem. I just thought since you'd mentioned Adam specifically I had better chime in. Cheers.

If I may clarify, Adam builds a website, and zips it up so you can download it to do with as you will. It does not publish the tree online. I state in my privacy policy that no data is extracted from GEDCOM files nor are they shared with anyone. Like Jane says it comes down to trust. I, like Jane do...

It's those standard flags I'm looking for. The others I won't process. Thanks

Nick, thanks for the link. I've already added support for most of these user defined records. I'll review the list to make sure I've covered them all. However, the _FLGS record contains user defined fields (__???) that are content specific, so I have no way of determining what these are without revi...

You are of course referring to the Ancestors Now tree builder and not VGedX. VGedX is a separate GEDCOM validation app. The Ancestors Now Tree builds reads in a GEDCOM file as well, but also creates ancestor profile pages using the data provided. I checked the build log, and it appears the only data...

I assume the offending warning is the one that says 'Removed unparsed record'. VGedX uses a common GEDCOM parsing library that is used in several of the free tools and services I provide. The library builds an internal database representation of the GEDCOM file during the parsing process in order to...

Publishing to CD or website
I here ya. The TOS was created generically by a free service, and is obviously heavy on the legal speak. Apparently it was not too concerned with a website's users. I've changed that section to read: 'By posting any Content using the Services, you are granting 'Us' the right to display your Content ...

VGedX is now also available as a web service that does not have access to your original file - maximum safety.

Publishing to CD or website
David, I've just recently begun providing a free web service that allows anyone to publish their trees online so friends and family have access to them. It supports most of the options you're looking for, is free and painless to use. You can upload your GEDCOM file and have an online tree in just a ...

Gerry, I'd be curious what changes you saw to the GEDCOM file. VGedX open the file read-only and never writes to it, so I wouldn't have thought it possible that it modified your file.

Son with two Fathers.
I would recommend that you always use the Association field to connect to non-biological parents. You can set their type to step-father, made-up-father, or anything else you like. You can then use that field to add sources, which you will need to do. That way the information is in your database, and...

Blog sites?
I have a couple of sites using Google Blogger. It takes about 5 minutes to setup and be running full steam. 10 minutes if you want to change some setting like themes. I spent a bit longer, but I'm picky. It is also really fast and have had no issues that I can think of. You can see my ancestry blog ...

User Defined Fields
I use user defined fields extensively in Family Historian. Unfortunately, FH does not allow users to enter them directly, so I add them using a text editor. Once they've been added, they will show up in FH and can be manipulated as expected i.e. edit, copy, paste, etc. So generally if I add a tag...

Keeping track of census records
Looking for way to keep better track of all those census records. Read my new article for tips on how GEDCOM tags (i.e. Family Historian) can be used to increase their availability and aid in further research.
