I confirm that reversing the tatewise suggestions, but keeping the FH PDF driver as default makes FH run properly.
I can further also confirm that reinstalling my Samsung ML-1915 driver and making it the default printer also solved the problem.
Thanks again everyone.

V5 falls over accessing ancestor etc diagrams
Magic! Just selecting the FH PDF printer does not work, as you said it has to be set as the default.
I will now try going back reversing the tatewise suggestions to the defaults and see if that has any effect.
Thanks very much all of you.

V5 falls over accessing ancestor etc diagrams
Thanks for the comments. I have uninstalled again, and reinstalled from V5 putting in the V4 key. This worked and FH opened fine using the sample gedcom file; however it fell over when diagram facility was accessed. I followed the suggestion of installing the 5.0.7 upgrade which installed fine and F...

V5 falls over accessing ancestor etc diagrams
I am using Vista and have upgraded FH continuously since V2. Today I tried updating from 5.0.4 to 5.0.9. This worked (could move around the data, generate reports etc) except when I tried to enter the diagram facility FH immediately fell over 'Family Historian has stopped working windows will close'...

cooperation via GEDCOM
I use FH now v3 and am cooperating with extended family around the world who use various programs including FTM, UFT/Roots. We each have files with much overlap extending to 5000 odd entries and want to produce a 'definitive' version. We assume we will use GEDCOM as the transfer mechanism. I have be...

Alternative Surnames
I have this problem with my Thorp(e) family. As primary name, i have tended to go for what is on the birth certificate, if that exists. In a related area of naming, for the first time I have encountered a child born a month or two before the marriage and subsequently the child used the married name ...

Use of Place Names
Some advice please. I have many subtly different place names all over the place. What is the best practice in the use of such names? Clearly when writing in what is on a document as free text in, for example, the right hand panel in the source section of events, one should write as exactly as possib...

Different results from 1901 census and ancestry.co
I also find that having different search algorithms on the two sites is very useful. Further, since FreeBMD has improved its servers, life is great!

Incomplete GRO reference
I had the same problem of an unreadable page reference and used the phone-in facility at GRO. the person on the other end took details of the problem. It worked very well; indeed that certificate came faster than one ordered on-line.

Ancestry.com
I have looked at the description of what is in ancestry.co.uk for the UK and what is in ancestry.com under 'UK and Ireland Records' and cannot work out if they cover identical ground. Does anyone know? Ancestry.com is currently about £55 (no VAT to pay - right??) while ancestry.co.uk is £70. Re prev...

Report like 'Family Journal' in Roots/UFT
As a convert from Roots/UFT I looked for a report something like their 'Family Journal' which I used a lot. This gives a report in fairly flowing English, in quasi-book form of all (or selections of) the information contained in the various fields of individual and marriage records for a selected nu...

Linked events
I am a new user converting from Roots/Ultimate Family Tree, so am still trying to get my head round this software - which seems good! I see that notes can be linked to several records but an event/attribute can only be linked to one individual or a family (i.e. in effect, two people). So for example...
