I updated my video driver.
And I stopped letting Windows "snap" the window into place. I have instead carefully dragged it to where I want it.
And it's staying put and opening like I want it now.
Thanks for the help!

Re: Remember where the window was
I just tried that. I did the Snap Left, and then (with the right side clear) dragged the window a little wider, and pulled it a little down from the top. I then hit File Exit. When I open FH again, it appears in the original location again. I quickly browsed for Calico in the Windows Registry Editor...

Re: Remember where the window was
As a check I just reopened FH by double clicking the FH icon on my desktop. I'm on a 4K monitor. The FH window opens 3 1/2" below the top of screen, 2" above the bottom of the screen, and 4 1/2" from the left edge. I open the Gedcom I want to work with. (Not a project, but a gedcom file directly. I'...

Remember where the window was
It seems every time I start FH it puts the window in a new spot. Granted, on the left side where I like it, but it's not the size or place where I left it. Every session I sometimes find myself needing to resize the focus window, and I always have to re-set the position of the main window. I like to...

Re: If I wish to source something, make something
Stewart, a workaround is to hit the space bar twice in the Marriage Date field, then the Add Citation button will work for both existing and new Source records. Also nothing needs to be deleted from the Date field later. The same trick works for any Date field in the Main tab, such as for Born , Ch...

Re: If I wish to source something, make something
If you don't, and just slam the "everyone knows" data into your database, somewhere down the line, you're going to have a moment where you say 'wait a minute, where did that information come from'? In this particular case, if you create an otherwise empty marriage for a couple because "everyone kno...

Re: If I wish to source something, make something
It's faster for me to just dump a date into the date field on the Main tab. That will automatically create the fact that I can then add a source to. Until I enter date, however, no fact is created, and no source can be attached. If I put the cursor in the data field spot, on the right side, in the S...

If I wish to source something, make something
I'm in the individual properties screen, where I find myself a lot. On this screen I can add details for name, details for Birth, Death, Buried, etc., and I've added Living, Will. I can likewise add details for spouse. And details for Marriage. But sometimes the only detail I know is Yes, they were ...

Re: Pat on the back for Simon Orde
I was coming here to mention the article. Took a while to turn the attention to Family Historian, but when he does so it's in a very positive manner. (He's been a bit negative on FH and native gedcom format in the past.) I experience no lag loading my 39k database. Not sure if I'd notice if it was r...

Stacked Conditional Operators?
What I had: =ExistsText(%INDI.DEAT[1+]%,"✝") %INDI.DEAT[1+].DATE:COMPACT% in %INDI.DEAT[1+].PLAC:TIDY% But I want it nuanced: =TextIf(%INDI.DEAT[1+]%, TextIf(HasFlag(%INDI%, "KIA"), "⚔", "✝")) %INDI.DEAT[1+].DATE:COMPACT% in %INDI.DEAT[1+].PLAC:TIDY% (Which doesn't work.) Basically, I want the ✝ if ...

Re: Unicode?
That did the trick.
When I set the "Initial Font" to Tahoma, I applied, saw no change, but then noticed there is a font= Arial in the Used Items block too. Once I changed that to Tahoma, it worked as I wanted it to.
Thanks.

Unicode?
I'm trying to incorporate some unicode symbols into my diagram. *, ~, and ✝ work just fine. ⚭ and ⚰ do not. They render as boxes. They appear to work here on my screen. I've tried to find them using CharMap, but while I can cut and paste from my source, the search for the symbol in CharMap doesn't t...

Re: Complicated diagram - legality viewpoint
To add a bit more humor. The German Green Party had a delightful and telling little expression a few years back: Legal. Illegal. Es ist egal. (Paraphrasing slightly since this is a family forum.) Just to lighten the conversation. What is the difference between illegal and unlawful? Illegal is a sick...

Add a custom fact perhaps?
I know TMG used had a custom tag CODI for codicils.
FH allows custom tags.

Re: Backup & Restore - not a new database
I was just confirming that I hadn't missed something. To Restore something is not the same as making something new from a former copy of something. (Restore is not the same as Clone from a Backup.) Conceptually, I am really trying to synch my database updates, currently stored on a laptop, with my "...

Backup & Restore - not a new database
I've just returned from spending some time away from home, with my database updated on a laptop. So... thousands of people, thousands of media files, I did a complete backup on the laptop. I transferred the backup file over to my home computer. As I understand it, this is supposed to be the way to t...

Re: A potential Convert from TMG
That was the big winning point for me. Where most all the other options use proprietary databases, several of which are based on extinct engines (TMGW, and Legacy still), Family Historian's database *is* Gedcom. For better or worse, it's nice to already be in the "standard" format all other software...

Me again. The query is nice, and programming on a level I'm not experienced with. I appreciate you taking the effort to entertain the idea. But it's still just snapshot info produced like a report separate from the individual and their editing window. What I'm interested in is something along the li...

[WishList Ref 550] Historical Event Timeline
Family Historian currently employs "Show Timeline Facts" which otherwise only displays facts from the gedcom about other related people on, and around, the individuals own timeline. What I'd love to see is another timeline option drawing it's input not from the gedcom file, but an external file. (An...

Re: Given Name Case Convert
Thank you. As I was researching some of the "language" on the internet, for things like fhGetValueAsText. It instead found GetValueAsText in the Unreal Engine documentation, a video game. Which apparently uses LUA like FH does. I will look into the LUA Patterns page. (I programmed in Basic, Pascal, ...

I have the Surname Case Convert plugin and it works great. Except the family member who used all capitals for her surnames also used all capitals for the given names. Let us expand 'Where within Source' like 'Text from Source'
I'm a bundler. I maintain a single source for FamilySearch.org. I collect hundreds of references from FamilySearch.org. Birth records, death records, marriage records, probate records, census records, etc. When I find a block of text from the source I insert it in the "Text From Source:" block. It c...
