Re: Backup/Restore options

Hello Mike I wish to have a backup (and update it frequently) of my family history work which is then safely stored on an external drive in the event that sooner or later (probably sooner) my aging XP computer crashes and is beyond repair. So I guess you would call that an insurance backup. If I’m c...

Re: Backup/Restore options

Hello Mike, Thank you for your reply. Gosh, this is confusing – unnervingly so for a less experienced computer user! I’ve read what you have said and read where you suggest and come to the conclusion that I need to undertake the following – but please correct me if I’m wrong. On my current computer ...

Backup/Restore options

I would appreciate advice please on the various backup options available in my copy of FH v 5.0.11. I want to be able to protect my work in the event of a complete loss of computer functionality. If I need to replace my computer I do have a CD to reload FH on a new machine. However, which of the var...

Re: Saving and restoring data

Thank you Jane. I very often create an external Windows backup of my documents and settings; would restoring this backup on my new machine achieve the same objective?

Saving and restoring data

I am a little confused with the various 'save' options in FH v5 and would welcome some advice please. I hope in the new year to replace my aging, but yet realiable, Windows XP desktop with a Windows 10 laptop. I know I shall need to reinstall the FH software afresh, but which of the various 'save' o...

Minor issues after installation

Thank you Peter. I have successfully copied the file from Program Files to Documents and Setting. All now seems well and the fix became immediately apparent when I > Add Fact and the Event/Attribute list was there, without having to ‘Show Hidden’ first. Similarly, as Mike suggested, I have looked at...

Minor issues after installation

Mike, thank you for this and for your patience. I am attempting to restore the missing Standard Fact Sheet. I have found the two via: Local Disk (C) > Program Files > Family Historian > Fact Types > Standard. There are two Standards (Standard and Standard V1) but no GroupIndex FHDATA File. But, neve...

Please explain to me, a novice, how I access: C:ProgramDataCalico PieFamily HistorianFact TypesStandard C:ProgramDataCalico PieFamily HistorianFact TypesCustom to then copy the data…to where? In any event, I’m not altogether sure this is what I need to do. I already have the Event/Attribute list. It...

Yes, the screen shots reflect the correct situation. The event/attribute list is empty. If I > Fact Sets the ‘mini’ screen shows only (?) 1. Standard. If I them ‘Show Hidden’ the entire list is as your ‘Hobby’ example (i.e.) ‘none’ and ‘undefined’. Highlighting ‘All’ and ‘OK’ the warning message the...

Thank you, Jane and Mike, for the replies. Opening Tools>Work With Fact Sets has no effect i.e. the list is still missing by default. If I set the ones I use to 'Show' I get the message ‘The selection included one or more events and attributes which are undefined. ‘Show’ has no effect on these event...

Minor issues after installation

I have recently installed V5 (full version) ‘on top of’ my pre existing V2, and have also downloaded the latest 5.09 upgrade. I’m very pleased with the new software and taking time to again work through the sample projects described in the book ‘Getting the most out of Family Historian 5’. However, ...

Updating to V5

Mike, thank you for this; it looks as if the upgrade from V2 to V5 is straightforward. However, until I have had the opportunity to study the concept of ‘projects’, I don’t quite understand the comment to 'eventually delete your old (my) standalone GEDCOM files' - surely these records are not standa...

Cornish Tin miner emigrated to Australia and died

Two sites you may want to try:

http://www.minebydesign.co.uk/calstock/ ... grants.htm and

http://www.cornwall-online.co.uk/genealogy.htm

The first provides links to the various Cornish Associations in Australia and the second a link to a Cornish Mining Emigration Index.

2.2 Release - comments please

Hi Peter
The fact that these numbers are individual Record IDs was my initial thought, but I'm not so sure.
If, for example, I display my wife's parents I get...of(Name)and...)Name) with a (3) displayed alongside. Whereas their individual Record IDs are 6 and 7 respectively.

2.2 Release - comments please

I may be that either I'm doing something wrong (I am new!) or have found a possible bug with 2.2. I have added (via the Property Dialog box) both a family note and a note linked to several members of the same family. All works well until I find that pressing the 'Tab' button does'nt accept the note....

Hi Jane I'm not sure if this applies to either general usage or is specific to 2.2. Using the example Peabody family in the User Manual and browsing records by expanding branches, there are numbers within brackets after each entry. What is the purpose of these numbers? What are they telling me? I do...

The census returns for Penzance are held at the Cornwall Centre, part of the Cornwall County Record Office - website; http://www.cornwall.gov.uk/cro and from there go to the link 'tracing your family history'. You may also want to visit http://west-penwith.org.uk which contains useful information an...

I purchased and installed FH two weeks ago and have spent many a pleasant hour working through the User Manual. I upgraded to 2.2 today and things just get better and better! Congratulations to Simon and Co for a great job. Being a 'new kid on the block' I may be back with a few queries!

Number of families

As a new member this is my first topic. Although I have dabbled with family history I have little or no experience of genealogy software and am intending to purchase 'Family Historian'. However, before I do I have a question which I fear might expose my innocence! I have undertaken, at various level...
