Perhaps I'm getting old but does anyone else find the toolbar buttons in version 5 to be just too tiny and fiddly? Is there a way of changing the size of the buttons that I don't know about and if not can we have the option of small, medium or large toolbar buttons in the next update?

Alternative surname spellings
As I said in my previous post Chris, I'm not disagreeing. I'm just pointing out one scenario where there is a clear convention among genealogists. It may not apply to most of us but it is there. The problem is that the internet has made it very easy to publish fantastic looking family tree informati...

I wouldnt disagree with any of the advice youve been given already. However, if you are going to pass the collated data on to other genealogists, it is standard practice to transcribe data exactly as it is written. Dont make interpretations or correct what you think are mistakes on original sourc...

Brother's Keeper v.6 to FH v.4
I can't speak for Brothers Keeper but I have just converted after many years as a 'Legacy' user. Based on my experience you will probably have to do the export in gedcom format several times until you have eliminated the uncategorised data and got a reasonable level of data conversion. Some of your ...

Task and To Do's
Sorry to disappoint you. The colour of the tab fill on the screen shot was just the standard colour allocated by FH4. If it looks different it is just because of inaccuracies of colour matching in the copy / paste process via windows / paint / internet explorer. As far as I know it can't be changed....

Task and To Do's
Hello sihicks: I've managed to find out what's possible, so here goes: As I said in my last post you can use the task notes, attached to the custom attribute, via the 'facts' tab OR As I suspected, you can show the task notes on the custom 'To Do' tab by following the same customisation procedure I'...

Task and To Do's
If your question is about how to put the task 1 box and Task 2 boxes on separate lines go back to step 5 of my 'how to' guide - where it says: Click on part 1 and type Task 1 in the label box Click on select against the data reference box and it will take you to the familiar tree data structure ...

That one caught me out at first too and I couldn't see where I was going wrong. You need to make sure that you are trying to move the item '(for advanced users)..' right at the top of the list - not the item 'Custom attribute' further down the list. As soon as you try to move it across, it automatic...

Export / Import Property Box Customisation
I have posted the following on the Tasks & To Do's thread but I've repeated it here because it is highly relevant to Tony's new thread: 'I have two instances of FH4 on two computers. One is the full (paid for) version working with my main files and the other is the 30 day demo version that I am curr...

Task and To Do's
I have two instances of FH4 on two computers. One is the full (paid for) version working with my main files and the other is the 30 day demo version that I am currently using as a test system. So I have been able to test out the transfer of the modified PB-INDI.fhdata file, the corresponding flags.f...

Task and To Do's
Do you know what the specific file names are Jane. I've had a look in the program files and can't recognise any of the *.fhdata files in the property box folder. Do we have to copy the whole folder across? Similarly I am not sure where the custom attribute is held unless it is in the standard fact t...

Task and To Do's
OK Folks, heres my attempt at a simple how to do it description. When it is set down like this it looks complicated, but it isnt really. Because you are working with new flags, new attributes and a new tab on the individual property box you cant do much real damage and everything can be undone....

Task and To Do's
Following a recent discussion about Task lists and To Do's in FH4, under another thread, I've had a go at creating a viable solution. The main problem to overcome is that some tasks are very generic and others need a detailed description. You also have to be able to sort and filter tasks by a variet...

To upgrade or not?
Thanks Jane. I had thought about creating a custom attribute called 'To Do' but I'd forgotten about using the named lists. In fact, I used named lists quite a lot, to indicate what action I needed to take, when I was sorting out one of my large problem files using FH3. I used lists such as 'tree int...

To upgrade or not?
I have been a 'Legacy' user for many years and have been testing out FH3 for the last six months, before making a final decision to migrate to FH4. Legacy has got fairly good task management capabilities and hence I was hoping that version 4 would have something similar or better. It hasn't, so I am...

To upgrade or not?
My view, expressed in more detail in other recent posts, is that there is nothing to lose by upgrading and there is almost certainly something to gain. How much you gain depends on what focus you apply to your research. The new FH4 is clearly designed to appeal more to new users, whatever their leve...

v4 Upgrade: Is It Worth the Risk?
I don't have as much experience of Family Historian as the previous respondents but I can confirm what they are saying and I think that Chris Bowyer's comments hit the nail on the head particularly well. I don't think you have anything to lose by moving to version 4, but how much you gain depends on...

individual box stripped down ?
Just an update from my earlier post. I was wrong in my assumption. I should have realised it from version 3 but I've found that Family Historian DOESN'T assign fixed instance numbers based on when you enter the data. It dynamically re-assigns the data instance number based on EVENT DATE order. Thus ...

individual box stripped down ?
Thanks Jane for that. Now I understand the custom item facility I am really going to enjoy playing around with it. However I am very aware that the alter ego of flexibility is the law of unintended consequences. So I need to think everything through very carefully before I make any changes to my liv...

Like 'justone' I'm still playing with the demo version. I do like the flexibility of the new property box but there are a couple of things about it that even at this stage I feel could be improved on. Firstly, unless I am mistaken you can't change the basic colour of the property box - it must be so...

Narrative reports Carriage return
Sorry Chris, it is not being fussy about layout. It is about producing reports that are easy and a pleasure for anyone to read. I don't think anyone would enjoy reading a book/ report made up of a succession of staccato sentences and few paragraphs or bullet points, however accurate the data is. Mos...

Can I strongly add my support to Lancashire Dave's query. I bought FH V2 several years ago, because of the brilliant diagrams and innovative structure, but found I couldn't use it as my main genealogy archive because of the lack of some critical features and the learning curve involved. The product ...
