I have Mcafee through Plusnet (owned I think by BT). When we reported the problem we were told that that was the first report. However it does look that the general fix has worked for me too. Thanks everyone.

Accented charaters
One of my relatives has an name with an accented character, like the French a acute. How can I record this? There is an item on the wish list for an easier way to access the charater map but I can't see even the harder way! I tried creating the name in a word processor and pasting from the clipbo...

I've done that too. Another advantage is that you can experiment with your own data that you are familiar with without messing up the original.

Our local library have a library licence for Ancestry so I can use it free. Not as convenient as doing it from home but very useful nevertheless. I am sure other libraries must have it too.

How about 'Prentice'? I have seen this before and assumed that it was short for apprentice.

Yes, I understand a carman was a driver, originally at least of horse drawn vehicles. That fits well with 'tramway' and OK with 'general' Not so sure about 'lime works' but there was likely to have been a need to transport things.

FH other uses?
I was given a book about the Guinness family - not so much the famous brewing side but their missionary and clerical cousins. I used FH to produce a tree to help me to work out who was who. It was also useful to pass on to friends to whom I recommended the book.

I think it is just a time.
h and m are hours and minutes so it looks like 4.00 pm
Is it a Scottish certificate? - if so this is quite usual.

Help working out a name on the 1851 census
How about Alexander, i.e. Alex followed by a 'superscript' r? I think this is fairly common practice in Scotland. There are plenty of Alexanders in St Ninians.
It's always useful to have a look at other names on the page to check out guesses by comparing with something which is more obvious.

Thanks for your help Dave. I unlinked all the relationships and then started linking again with the children. While there was no other spouse the diagram showed no spouse, but as soon as I added the divorced spouse the box appeared for the non existent spouse. Perhaps you are right as to the reas...

The simplest form of the diagram is centred on the mother and it shows the divorced husband.
An ancestors diagram centred on one of the children does not show a spouse.
(I confirm I am using v3)

Thanks Jane, but sorry if I am being stupid. Every time I try to hide this box the child boxes also hide. I found the following in Help, but still I lose the child boxes too. Show Hidden Boxes Check this option to show all hidden boxes. By default these appear with a purple background. You can then ...

I have a cousin who was married but is now divorced. Since her divorce she has adopted two children as a single parent. I have added these to a blank spouse record, but I would rather they showed on diagrams as not having a (family) father - is that possible?
