Media files changed to .ptl files - won't open

Thanks very much tatewise, I think you're right.  I've now come to the same conclusion after a lot of Googling and reading your post.  I used a Western Digital external hard-drive (My Book World) running Memeo to transfer all my old files to my new computer - and I suspect it changed the names of al...

Media files changed to .ptl files - won't open

Few of the files in my Media subfolders in my main FH project are now recognised by FH.  They have been changed to .ptl files and aren't recognised by FH 4.1 or 5.0. The message received when I click on them is 'Unable to load object.  Error on file open'.  In Tools>Work with External File Links, mo...

Dates and other restrictions

Just starting to use AS after today's FHUG news.  Looks excellent, but I think that there are a few limitations that would make me reluctant to use it all the time.  Of course, I hope that I just haven't figured work-arounds yet. 1) Smart dates is a good idea.  However, I personally feel more comfor...

Missing custom events/attributes

Ah, thanks for solving this one, John. Yes, they will only appear in the 'Add Fact' dialog box once I (a) tick 'show hidden', and (b) 'define' the event/attribute afresh (by selecting it and clicking 'Properties'). Well, I'm sure that Simon had a reason. I've not come across 'Auto create notes' befo...

Missing custom events/attributes

I've just upgraded to v4, and my existing custom events/attributes (eg one I have for 'military service')seem to have gone missing. Of course, they still exist in individuals' properties, but are missing from the list of facts to add (under fact sets). Has anyone else found this? Are they hiding som...

Individuals with same Source Type

Just a quick check to see if anyone has yet worked out how to develop a query that will show individuals linked with a 'source type' (across all their life events)? The closest that we had got two years ago (see rest of thread) was listing those associated with a source type for a certain event (eg ...

Create sources for all new pictures?

Do you guys create a new source for every multimedia object/picture that you import, or just those with info to record from (eg census page)? To put it in context, I have a photo of a church where a relative was the Rector. In order to get the photo to show up on his property dialog box, I guess tha...

What happens to linked files when all move?

Thanks guys, I'll stop worrying now and just go ahead. I like things that work auto-magically, Jon.

What happens to linked files when all move?

I'm wanting to back up my gedcom file and source folders (eg multimedia), and may also wish to email the whole package to people. I'm concerned that when I do this, the links to multimedia files will no longer be valid cos of being moved (so not in the location originally specified). Is this the cas...

Individuals with same Source Type

Thanks Jane, I'll try to work this into a query. I think that it's the closest that I'm going to get to selecting all cited in a source (for all events). I guess that if the source covers more than one event, I could just write several lines with different events in the query? Anyway, I'll have a pl...

Individuals with same Source Type

Thanks, but I think that only shows people linked with individual sources, not groups of sources (eg Source Types).  But I don't know if there's a similar function for source type[??]. So far, the best I've come up with is to add each relevant source manually to a list for that source type, and then...

Individuals with same Source Type

Ultimately I'm trying to flag people whose details I've found in certain source types (eg everyone cited in Army discharge papers). I think that I need to run a query asking to include all individuals with a certain source type, but I'm not doing well. I can create a query for an event within an ind...

New columns in Records Window

Does anyone know if/how it is possible to add new columns to the Records Window?

It would be rather useful to have a Residence column for individuals.

Sources

Jane (or anyone else who who wants to consider this) Have you had any more thoughts on whether to keep to one source record per census, or one per folio?  I'm tempted to do the latter to allow linking to downloaded image file from the 1901 census website. Is it possible to group source records (or a...
