Thanks for that very informative reply, Jeremy, and useful hints.

Birth Certificates
Is it possible to view birth certificates (NOT indexes) online? If so, which are the best sites?
I'm not interested in ordering birth certificates, I just need to see them. Happy to pay the corresponding fee, of course.
Thanks

Graphical Relationship Calculator
It's so difficult to explain in words - and yet it's something so simple. Your query can tell me the relationship but it won't SHOW me how they are related. You ask for two people and you produce a diagram showing how they are related from the common ancestor down - but only showing the people 'in t...

Unlinked Persons Report
I'm thinking of a simple printout of anybody who is not linked (yet) to the main tree within the database. In my case, for example, I have 230 people, of whom 190 are linked and the remaining 40 remain to be linked somehow. The search for orphans is indeed a nice tool

I suppose this is sort of covered by the 'Search For Orphans' query?

I can't put my finger on it right now, but something is not quite right yet. I still have problems finding what I want in FH. For example, the queries and reports options seem to be all over the place. Also, a lot of the 'click on the right-button' events seem to have escaped an alphabetical orderin...

Not a personal priority but it wold be nice to have and most other genealogy programs seem to offer this already (eg. 'John Smith was born in 1973, to Joseph James Smith and Mary Ellen Jackson', etc. etc.). From what I can see it's 'just'(!) a question of adding a few set phrases to an individual re...

A list of key dates from Jan 1st to Dec 31 inc. births, marriages and (optionally) deaths. I know it's a bit morbid but some of us like to be reminded that it's 93 years to the day that Great Uncle Percy passed away

Yes, Jane, I think it must be the FRC. Is Kew near King's Cross? (I live in Spain, by the way, but I visit the UK in the summer usually) I tried following your link but I just end up going round in circles as usual (they seem to throw you effortlessly from one site to another - all with infuriatingl...

Ah, yes, the text schemes. Thank you, Jane. Yes, I've successfully played around with a few of these. Very nice tool. FH is quite beautifully crafted in many places, I feel. So, I'll see if adding an extra line in the text scheme has any effect. I still get confused, however, because you're not actu...

I must admit I've got terribly confused in my initial enthusiasm trying to track down ancestors, etc. Am I right in thinking that the place I need to visit is the Family Records Office? (which, if memory serves me well, is near King's Cross). Or have I got completely the wrong end of the stick? I've...

'The name field used is the first one listed in the person, if you want to show both simply add a line %INDI.NAME[2]% This will then show both names where they exist. ' Could you expand on this a little, please, Jane? Are you talking about diagrams? To my knowledge, you can't add *any* command lines...

PS. I have just tried (wrongly I daresay) adding my cousin as an adopted daughter of my uncle - first I created a link to my uncle's second family record and then used Add 'adopted father' relationship. I'm not sure if this is right or wrong, but the resulting diagram (using Descendants of my greatg...

Hello, Had a fairly horrendous weekend with FH. 48 hours later and I've made no progress, so back to the experts! I think my problem is as identified by Simon in one of his posts: 'Incidentally there is also the issue, as Jane hinted - what if A adopts the child of C and D? In that case, this child ...

Thanks for the link, Jane. I've downloaded and installed Gedcom Report. It does indeed have some very nice ready to use reports ('scripts'). However, nothing along the lines of what I'm looking to do. It seems I would have to learn about VBScript - neither time nor patience for that - though even th...

I think the sensible thing is to ask the experts before I waste my time trying to produce something that simply can't be done. Is there a way to produce a list of events in chronological order? eg. birthdays, wedding dates and deaths. Jane has shown me how to produce these queries separately. Very e...

Or should that be 'censi'? Anyway, what's the score? Do they only become public domain after 100 years? Or did I imagine that one up? Which censuses (sic) apart from 1901 are also available on-line? Reading through a thread on this forum, there's a promising site called 'freecen.rootsweb.com'. Has a...

'The export as text allows you to select commas or tabs for the export. If you then add .csv to the file you should be fine' In that case, that's what I've been doing (but forgot to use the .csv extension). I found I got better results using tab separated values. With the comma separated values, som...

Thoroughly delighted with FH 2.2.4, though, as a new user, I can't appreciate in what ways this represents an improvement on version 2.1. (Incidentally, I had a similar 'problem' to the person above - the icon from my FH demo version wouldn't disappear, be moved to the Recycling bin or be deleted. H...
