Downloading usable gedcoms?

As Jane says, what sdo you mean by not very comaptible? I've downloaded files from that website before and have not had issues at all. If you are refering to the report FH gives you when you open the gedcom, this is a report of what FH sees as errors and most of the time, it will correct them withou...

Back-up using Ancestry?

The only program that does that is Family Tree Maker 2012, but even then only imperfectly and it's expensive. It boasts synching the online and offline tree, but I've read horror stories of people that have had to start over because their file got corrupted. It's not as nice for data entry either. I...

Engagements

Engagement is part of the family record and unless you set the marriage status to Never Married, FH assumes the marriage took place. Try following Mike's instructions for setting the status to 'Never Married' Then FH will report them as 'Partner' instead of husband and wife in narritive reports. Not...

V5 GEDCOM Issue

Forgot to say, downloading the gedcom for an individaul is wrong, the family is not or vice versa, can't remember now. It does it only on 1 set of records. Look at the person in the other view and download that gedcom and it's fine.

V5 GEDCOM Issue

I've noticed those sorts of erros too. I'm fairly certain I was still using v4 at the time. For me it started when they introduced the new site. The key is to open the Family Search gedcom first and make sure that's all correct before you start importing/merging into your project. I found that the d...

I'm not an expert, but the active X message is an internet explorer thing, not FH related. You'll get it on certain websites too. Your options are to allow IE to run the axtive x, or play with the CD creation settings. About the only change I can think of that's changed in v5 for CDs that could crea...

64 bit Processing

I've noticed you've asked the question about both programs. I use 64-bit OS and have been for a while. I have never found a single issue with any program. In fact, I run plenty of programs which only have a 32-bit available. It's really no different, just download the 64 bit programs where available...

It won't help you now, but for future instances where you merge, you can select which name to keep during the merge. Discard the old name and keep the new one or keep both. If you haven't done any discarding during your current merge, you will find that the new name is there, but the old one is the ...

Website Generators

I have made a site with PhPGedView before and was very impressed. However, it's not worth the hassle if no-one else is going to edit the data. Most family members will only look at it once, maybe twice and then not bother. So why go throught the hassle/expense of getting a webserver that supports ph...

V5 Ancestor and Descendants diagram

This 'little' issue that has so many workarounds is actually making me seriously consider using something else for books. Am thinking about getting Ancestral Author or The Complete Genealogy Reporter as FH simply still isn't able to create books. It's better than v4, but still nowhere near what othe...

The postmark is unfortunately not readable, but I'm fairly certain it's between 1918 and 1921 because it's a George V stamp and it's 1p.

The website is brilliant if you want to look at pictures of museum exhibits. Other than that it's pretty useless. As to Fort Nelson itself, to cut a long story short, they don't have the info on general display and don't have the staff any more to look into archived documents. Hence I need a source ...

I've just received a postcard someone found in their 'records' that was addressed to one of my husbands ancestors that I'm researching. It's adresssed to Gunner T. You can hide those by not automtically expaning sibling branches, but you'll still get siblings and sibling spouces.

Where is the auto diplay root siblings option? All I've found is the tick box for auto expanding root siblings branches and that doesn't have the same effect, it still lists the siblings.

My mistake, it's the other diagrams (not all relatives) that you get the option to auto expand sibling branches. I've tried all the settings, and I can't replicate your problem (and I have plenty of those sorts of branches in my tree). I can turn off the display of expansion button for that type of ...

It would not be usefull for me. I have 3 generations who all have the same first (and last) name and I have that across multiple lines back. Then there is the case of sons being named after uncles and grandparents. And last but not least, the practice of reusing names if children had passed away you...

The transcribed index is usefull as a guide. Don't put blind faith in it, as others have said, it's a judgement call on the transcribers part and they are human after all. It's worth checking different spellings, including unexpected ones. I'm researching Hay and have come across them as Hay, Haye, ...

Dagwood, just about any chart FH produces fits better on landscape than portrait. You can fiddle and get something like a pedigree to fit nicely on a portrait page, but most others don't. DaveP, have you tried scaling? One of the options when you insert a diagram is to scale it. If you have a small ...
