Can any recommend Mysql software
I have changed my approach to getting data from my gedcom into a mysql database. When I tried using the phpgedview database tables I found that I would have to quite a bit of additional work, since although the phpgedview had tables for individuals and families, these are rather simple and most of t...

Does FH ever change GEDCOM index numbers?
I am making an databse application to index family letters. For my sins I am using MYSQL and PHP, but I need to import my GEDCOM file which I maintain with FH. What I am worrying about is how to make sure I can import into my application a new version of the GEDCOM when I update it with FH. My ques...

Can any recommend Mysql software
Wow! The quick installation of phpgedview looked much worse than it actually was. The only instruction missing from the quick list was the need to create a database in myqsl, which I realised quite quickly and did with phpmyadmin. I have only put it on the apache server on my own computer so far, bu...

Can any recommend Mysql software
I am interested in this question. I want to try and build an database accessed over the web to index and then do searches on family letters in several different archives. My idea is to make an application that several people can use to index things in different archives all related to the same set ...

Crash on clicking descendants chart button
I have downloaded eDocPrinter, which I agree has a fancy set of options for printing, and so could be used instead of Distiller. But what I need sometimes to do is 1) edit and extract text in .pdf docs 2) Add page numbers 3) Put a folder of sequentially numbered jpeg pictures from my digital camera ...

Crash on clicking descendants chart button
Thanks for the super quick response. What a service! I cant think why I am not up to date with my version. Must not be paying attention to the FHUG. Anyway, I have installed the 2.3.5 download now. Following Simon's suggestions I have had a look at the printer setup and now I believe I have found a ...

Crash on clicking descendants chart button
I have a validated file which seems to have recently started failing in this way from time to time. I have tried to recording the exact sequence of commands immediately prior to crash. The only consistent pattern I may have found (I am not actually sure if this happened absolutely every crash, but ...

Adding / removing a lot of sources
I have used the following helpful tip: When adding sources to existing events, don't forget that when auto-source is on you can right click on an event in the records window and add the auto-source citation. But it only seems to work when a single record is selected. I missed adding the source for a...

Merged file invalid
Simon I have now had a good look at the two input files which I tried to merge last night, which produced another occurence of the bug I reported yesterday. I saved both files immediately before starting the merge. Both files validate OK. The marking up the merge took many hours. I was fairly thorou...

Merged file invalid
When the problem occured and I restarted FH, I saved a copy of the offending gedcom with a new name. I then fixed the problem by validating this file and later saved the fixed file back ontop of the original, so yunfortunately I think I have ended up with two copies of the corrected file! I will try...

Merged file invalid
When you open the compare/merge files function FH first asks if you wish to validate the files. When the files have at some point previously been validated in FH, I always answer no to this. However, yesterday I found that the result of a merge of two validated files, did not validate and caused FH ...

Dont use the EDIT drop down menu. Use the DIAGRAM one. The first item of this is COPY DIAGRAM... which opens a further dialog for you to specify the copy.

Saving a half completed merge?
I have just completed a very large, complicated file merge with many hundred records, marked compatible, needing examining and sometimes research to solve the conflicts. FH is brilliant for this; so much handier than working with paper printouts. But I have a worry that I might lose the mark up work...

Recovering data deleted by split file
Thank you for the suggestion of diskinv, which was quite interesting but unfortunately the version dowloaded shows deleted clusters/sectors but does not show deleted files if in they are in the NFTS format. But is does show deleted files in the FAT format used on my USB flash disk, and I was able to...

Recovering data deleted by split file
This is a forlorn request, I dont expect a postive reply! I have just lost a number of modifications since my last back up of my gedcom when I had a mental abberation and mistakenly used split file on my master file! I can enter them again, but does anyone know if there is any way to get into the PC...

Diagrams - expansion buttons on children bar
I agree your implementation of the idea would be very useful and save time compared with my suggestion since with yours you would just have to indicate somehow the people to be retained and all the boxes in between could be selected automatically. My idea has the advantage that a tick and expansion ...

Making a file of differences between gedcoms
I find comparing and merging gedcom files very useful, but I would also like to make a list of selected differences which I can send back to the originator of one of the gedcoms. I cant find any way of printing or otherwise recording the details in the merge/compare display. The only option it seems...

I am interested in diagrams and also discovered this. I call it the 'stacked hay rake problem'. The problem arises because the siblings of each family are like the prongs of rake and, if the sibilngs have their own set of children, you can't fit their hay racks without extending the width of the par...

Possible Site Problems
I have noticed recently that the order of the topics on several of the forums (eg the Usage Forum) have got rather scrambled. They used to be nicely ordered with most recently updated at the top. I cant see any way for the user to restore the original neat order, and I wonder whether this is a site ...

Diagrams - expansion buttons on children bar
I find myself frequently tailoring FH's diagrams to fit a page, whether for publication or to send to another researcher. Even though it is sometimes a bit labourious, I can achieve most things by splitting off a gedcom containing only the individuals I want and then exporting the diagram to a photo...

Ability to move boxes (and branches) of diagrams
Who else needs to move boxes around on diagrams to fit as much as possible on a page? There are only 22 votes for this on the wish list - I have just added mine. This has grown to very high importance for me over the last few days as I have tried to produce nice illustrations for a family history bo...

Agreed. Lightening installation and my files open with the familiar format, with no problems.
8 pages of new features will take some time to master, as I still have not learnt all the features of version 2.18. But the ones I tried worked well.
Thank you FH.

Dont worry Phil. The yellow slip I have says 2.0 and 2.1 users will be able to download a free upgrade from the Internet, when it is released. I naturally assume that means all users of the earlier versions. I have read here of a lot of interest about just which new features will be added. However, ...
