Transferring data from a CD
My old Windows Vista computer died but I had put most (but not all, alas) of the FH data on a CD. I now have a Windows 10 laptop have downloaded my Family Historian5 programme. I have now downloaded the CD but cannot find where it is hiding in the computer - I've checked My documents, My pictures, D...

Thank you again, Mike - I'm afraid I'm not a good student and despite more effort I eventually resorted to contacting Jane who 'invaded' my screen and put things to rights. It looked so simple when someone else was doing it! But I'm very grateful to the Forum for the support and now look forward to ...

Gedcom v. Project files
Thank you so much for your detailed reply, I printed it knowing I'd never remember the details. Back to the computer full of confidence - but I can't locate anything like the folders you listed. When I open Family Historian Projects in My Documents, it shows FH Sample, Susan Martineau (let's call it...

Gedcom v. Project files
Thanks! I think I have good backup, always press the Save button and everything has always been in My Documents. If I press the FH icon (fh monogram) on desktop, it opens directly on my Focus Window, labelled SusanMartineau.FHproject with all my most recent data but in GEDcom. If I go to My Document...

Gedcom v. Project files
My data seems to have split into two folders without my knowledge. If I click on the FH icon on my desktop, my project comes up with 116 individuals and 68 families(correct), but it is called FHgedcom. If I go to the original FH programme, showing the Project Window, under the Sample Project, it say...

download new version failure
Thanks for all the advice. Jane Admin - The error window which comes up is as I copied it above, ending Error 126 - I don't know what else I can add! And no I didn't download it from IE, - the offer of the update came up as soon as I opened FH from my desktop, with no indication that I should do any...

Oh dear, it's me again. I just tried to download the new version 5.9 as suggested by you. It started but then stopped and 'retry' didn't work so I clicked on 'Abort'. Then went back to my desktop to open the Family History file and now keep getting message 'DLL maybe missing, corrupt or wrong versio...

Many thanks for the advice ... I'll try it in due course. I'm sure I'm not alone in wanting to hand the results of my research - including old photos - onto my children and grandchildren, via their computers.

saving data on external hard drive
I have an external hard drive (Intenso) which works fine for saving texts or photos, a safeguard against my computer crashing. The main reason I bought it was to save all my Family History data so that when we visit our scattered family I can show everything to them - also, a safeguard against compu...
