Re: Can i produce a copy of a Decendent family tree?

Can you clarify what you mean by "one line of my family tree using the furthest descendant" ? Did you mean "earliest ancestor" (with all their descendants)? Or do you want one line from an ancestor to their furthest (most recent) descendant, without any extra side branches? The method Valkrider has ...

Re: 32bit or 64 bit AS

This is ambiguous and I think it should be phrased differently: The only rule is that 32-bit AS must be installed in a 32-bit version of Windows. On a first reading this appears to mean that 32-bit AS it can be installed only in 32-bit Windows. In fact it can be installed in either 32-bit or 64-bit ...

Re: Toolbar Font Size

Hi Julie, This is probably caused by having a higher resolution screen on you new laptop. In V6 you can use Tools>Preferences>Display and adjust the toolbar size to compensate for this, but I don't think that option was available in V5. You might be able to adjust the Windows personalisation on the ...

Mike, do you mean 64-bit AS must be installed in 64-bit version of Windows? As you said yourself later, you can fit 32-bit into either a 32-bit or 64-bit Windows.

Re: Printing Family Tree

If I could move downwards and then horizontally left or right the diagram would become squarer. It is quite easy to move families downwards and then horizontally. Here is an example created from the Family Historian Sample Project. It's a descendants tree with Michael Pleasance Munro as the diagram...

Re: Printing Family Tree

David, can you also tell us whether you are using a top-down tree or a right-left tree? And is 17 feet 4 inches the width or the height? A top-down descendants tree can be extremely wide if you include all siblings in every generation. There are ways of reducing this, without necessarily hiding any ...

Re: Splitting my husband's side of the family away from mine

Yes, I think you'll need to start over again, and run the plugin on one copy of your project to produce a file containing just your relatives, and then run it again on another copy of the project to produce a file with just your husband's relatives. Yes, I think you need to leave the boxes ticked. H...

Re: Splitting my husband's side of the family away from mine

Are all your relatives still showing in the Records window? Are your father and mother there? Your grandparents? I suspect not. The Ancestors query Mike suggested you use will include all your direct ancestors (so they will be removed) but not their 'other descendants', who will remain in the file b...

Re: Marriage to Deceased Wife's Sister etc.

This might be even more complicated to write as a query, but it could be approached from the other direction: look for pairs of sisters or pairs of brothers where each of the pair has a spouse with the same name. That doesn't necessarily mean the spouses were the same person, but it would narrow the...

Ann, With reference to your example of a bigamous marriage, I have found a few instances. I always record the details of the second (bigamous) marriage in the same way as any other marriage, to flag up the fact that a marriage ceremony took place on a particular date and place. I use the note field ...

Use an All Relatives diagram, but in Diagram>Options set the number of Generations Down to 1 . This will display each ancestor's siblings but exclude any descendants of those siblings. If you don't want the siblings of the diagram root to be displayed, right-click on each one and select Hide .

Re: Occupation - Date

Although, like Mike, I try to standardise occupations to some extent I agree with DavidF that there are cases where our unfamiliarity with the occupations is a drawback. A distinction which might seem unimportant to us may have been very significant to the people concerned. A young woman who was a '...

You didn't need to install V5 first (although it won't matter that you have done). The problem is that if your most recent purchase was an upgrade rather than a full version you can't use the V6 free trial download. It's worth mentioning here that if you use Ancestral Sources to create census, birth, baptism, marriage, death or burial sources, AS can (optionally) add a corresponding Type to the Source record when it is created.
