Re: I Quit FH for TMG

I don't record a repository for a book unless it's a particularly rare book. But I do record the Publication Information, which should enable someone in the future to search to find where copies might be found. Obviously if it's a very rare book I would record where I found it, and if I happened to ...

Re: Find My Past appears to have the new GRO Index

I wonder if FMP have decided to show the surname of an unmarried mother as the same as the child's, rather than leave it blank, to make the pre-1911 index consistent with their long-standing post-1911 index entries. Also, while they are still working on adding the mothers' names, leaving the surname...

Re: Saving colour diagrams as pdf

In Diagram Options > Print tab , you have probably ticked Print text lines and boxes in black-and-white only . Untick this and the diagram will be 'printed' to PDF in colour. You may need to tick that option again when you next want to print to your own black and white printer, to avoid getting grey...

Re: Possible FH bug

I find that with method 3 the name field is not highlighted (i.e. not surrounded by a thick border) but the cursor is still placed in that field ready for data entry, so it makes no difference to the user. Are you sure the cursor is not visible? By the way, there are indeed other ways of adding a pa...

Re: Find My Past appears to have the new GRO Index

I was talking about the FMP index. They have been gradually adding mother's maiden name to their index of pre 1911 births for some time now. I don't know whether they are doing this by 'scraping' the data from GRO online, as Mervyn suggested, or collecting data from local family history societies wh...

Re: Birth Registration and Mother's Parents names

In cases like this I don't treat the grandparents as associated persons, I just enter them in FH as the mother's parents (if I don't already have them) and then cite the nonconformist record as evidence for their names.

Re: Find My Past appears to have the new GRO Index

They have been steadily adding to it since they first started showing mothers' maiden names a few years ago. It's pretty good now, but I think there may still be a few gaps because I am still occassionally seeing entries where there is no mother's name in the index. (i.e.not even a repeat of the chi...

Re: Whole record versus name citations and my Baptism dilemma

If there is no evidence of the mother in the baptismal register, I would not infer her residence (she might have died in childbirth and infering a residence could cause confusion later on). Similarly, even the father might have died. Sometimes a baptism record will refer to a deceased parent, as in...

As you are not concerned about a generation all being on the same row, you can use the Movement Control Box (second icon from the right in the Diagram toolbar). If you are not familiar with this click the Help button in the small Movement Control Box window for guidance on what can be done. With the...

is there a way to hide the coloured arrows when you combine multiple diagrams?

Yes, in Diagam Options > General tab untick Check for duplicates.
But if you leave it ticked you will see there are various Options you might want to try out.

Re: Couple in between siblings.. help

The Flat option suggested by Mike will place the couple on the same row as the husband's siblings, but at the extreme right of the row (so that the wife's family can be added on the right). In a case where the wife has no family to be displayed this looks odd, and it is harder to see where the husba...

Re: Couple in between siblings.. help

Because Cornelis Ceton and Pieternella Poulie are both direct ancestors of the diagram root it is not possible. You don't currently have any ancestors for Pieternella Poulie, but if you did they would need to be displayed in the diagram, just as Cornelis Ceton's ancestors are. Try adding a 'dummy' p...

Ann, You said "I've been adding images to existing sources for ages" and it worked, so you need to find what is different about the sources you are trying to add to now. Firstly, do you have more than one project? If so, are you sure you are opening the right project in AS? Secondly (Helen...

Re: Using and displaying Places

In the example you give, the man who was apprenticed in London would have lived near his work so it's safe to record London as his residence. But bear in mind that the place where someone carries out their occupation is not always the place where they live. This is less of a problem with historical ...

Coming to this discussion late, I am a bit surprised at the confusion. The slide bar and the mouse wheel do different things, both of which are useful. I can't remember what the backup options were in V3 but as Bill says, if you have a zipped backup of the Gedcom you should be able to import it into V6. However the most important difference between V3 and V6 is the Project structure, which was introduced in V4. In V6 in the Project Window click New...
