Re: Ancestry profile, source or fact

Like sbell95, I find Elizabeth Shown Mills' Evidence Explained website helpful when I need to clarify my thoughts. Mills also cautions us to cite what we actually use. For example, if AncestryUser123 cites the 1931 Census of England and Wales, we don't cite the 1931 Census of England and Wales becau...

Re: Find my Past... or Ancestry ?

I've said this before, but if you can't keep a subscription to everything at once, consider keeping a 'records wishlist' of things you'd like to see, and sign up for e-newsletters to get news about what's happening on the sites you don't have a subscription to. Then you can take advantage of free ac...

Re: Find my Past... or Ancestry ?

There is also a browser extension called WikiTree Sourcer which can be used independently of WikiTree but works way faster for me. You also don't need to manully set up the search targets unlike with ORA. Oh, that's good to know, thanks, Sarah! I forgot to say, one advantage over using search targe...

Re: Find my Past... or Ancestry ?

The question of findmypast vs. Ancestry - it depends. Just like real estate: it's all about location, location, location. It all depends on what record sets you need to search and where the records are on offer. If you need clear census images, The Genealogist has recently updated their entire colle...

Re: Find my Past... or Ancestry ?

I have a sub to both as well - definitely need them as each has record sets for different branches of my family, plus I love the newspapers on FMP. I also maintain trees on both, but find Ancestry's tree far easier to use. I would love to get TheGenealogist as well, for some of their unique databas...

Sarah, thanks for catching that!

ORA-L is indeed hosted at Google Groups, not Groups.io. I've edited my earlier post.

I don't know what data is provided in FamilySearch *.csv files, but have you tried using the Flexible CSV Importer plugin to convert them into a Project and thus a mergeable GEDCOM? Thanks, Mike, I'll check out the plugin. The new FamilySearch search interface allows the user to choose what informa...

Re: Collecting Data From Online and Other Researchers

I have a source-centric workflow, starting with the image itself (what Ancestry calls "Citation Media"). Unless I am using Ancestral Sources, I generally create the multimedia object first, then the source, then use Auto-Source Citation to extract the data, along the lines of Colin Spencer...

I hate to throw a monkey wrench into the works, but -- What I would like to do is create a custom FamilySearch Family Tree ID field that allows me to store the ID for my own use, along with the date I entered the ID to Family Historian. Point taken, Mike, but since we were talking about an embedded program, I thought it would be worth asking. On the 1911 census, one of the documents revealed by the Extra materials button is a list. That would show where there are multiple schedules for the same address. See bottom left on the attached. You misunderstand Jim . Helen wants to create one Fact with its Source Citation and then duplicate that Fact in several Individual records. As a thought on work-flow... The detailed temptation here is to take the person's date of birth, work out the appropriate registration date and just look for the appropriate registration collection.
