Ancestral Sources under Wine...

Hi Zed, I had some success with AS using Wine on Ubuntu 11.04 though I haven't tried Mint. From memory, I think I just installed .net from the M$ installer and didn't have to do a lot of tweaking. There were various minor issues, but it did run and I was able to enter census details etc. I think pro...

Setting default applications for FH4

Further to this and more for peoples future reference than anything, I have discovered that it is relatively straightforward to access native linux applications from within Wine with a small tweak. Anyone interested should consult the article here... http://www.pcurtis.com/ubuntu.htm#winenative PDFs...

Setting default applications for FH4

Thanks for your reply Tatewise and PeterR, Along with a few other FH users I am not using Windows at all, but experimentally running it under Ubuntu Linux. With the latest WINE version, it all works pretty much flawlessly now - potentially allowing a greater number of users to access the application...

Setting default applications for FH4

Happy New Year to everyone !! I have found vague refs to this issue elsewhere, but not the answer... Does anyone know where to set FH's default apps please. For example I have various PDF files that are multimedia attachments to sources, but when I try to open the PDF file by clicking its icon, I ge...

FH 5

Hopefully Nick is correct, I would be ok with paying a reduced fee to upgrade, but it would be pretty unfair to expect existing loyal users who've paid for FH to have to pay in full all over again ?

Underline 'No Children'

The underline would show that your research has conclusively proven that the person did not have children (for example a child death) or an adult who you know for certain never had children. Since it is safer to assume there were no children until you find some, I'm suggesting we could have an optio...

Underline 'No Children'

Well, I was actually talking about an OPTION to have it automatically underline people with no offspring and automatically remove the underline if/when children are added.

Cheers,
Geoff.

Underline 'No Children'

To clarify, I just think it would be good if there was an option for FH to mark anyone who hasn't any children/offspring (yet) attached to be underlined. The line would then disappear as soon as a child/offspring was attached. Having to go through and add a child count attribute manually seems a tad...

Underline 'No Children'

Thanks. Maybe I am getting confused with the semantics of 'children' vs 'offspring' but basically it would be great if FH detected cases for example where a person died under (say) 16 years old and marked the person with a black underline. Even better if it could do the same for cases where there is...

Underline 'No Children'

Sorry, I should explain a little better - I can get the line ok if I manually add an attribute Child Count and set it to 0. What I want is a query to automatically go through and find all persons with no children and then create and set the attribute. Is that possible - surely FH already knows how m...

Underline 'No Children'

I would also like to enable this rather useful indicator. I have set the 'No Offspring' marker in Diagram Options/General. Display Spouse in own box is ticked, but I am not getting the marker under an infant death (I have tried re-drawing the diagram). I am obviously doing something wrong - any idea...

Submitters - how to use ?

I can see that the submitter records would be very useful to keep the details of say, a regular correspondent with whom you exchange documents, photos etc. However, whilst I can easily create submitters in the record window, I can't see how you link them to a particular source or multimedia record ?...

V4 success with Ubuntu Linux and Wine

Hi Myke, I am wondering if the key to success is to use the 'registered version' not the 30 day trial. I have upgraded to Ubuntu Natty 11.04 now and installed the file install_fh4.1.3_dl.exe from the family-historian.co.uk site. Applied the usual patches etc as described, but now stuck behind the ol...

V4 success with Ubuntu Linux and Wine

Great news Myke, thanks for letting us know. This is great news. Hopefully I will be able to say goodbye to greedy Microsoft very soon now (FH4 is now the only application I still need Windoze for). I may just wait until the public release of Natty in a week or so before I upgrade, but great to hear...

Consular staff records

Does anyone know where one would go to access records for staff of overseas UK embassies ? For example, I have discovered that my Great-Uncle Edward Browne worked as an officer at the British Consolate in Budapest, Hungary in the 1960s and I wondered if it would be possible to find out more about hi...

V4 success with Ubuntu Linux and Wine

This is great news Steelskin - well done !! I will try this out later.  When I last looked at this in any detail it seemed that FH was using various crypto functions that were not yet available in Wine. On the third problem, the seed post of this thread by Myke refers to a registry hack that affects...

V4 success with Ubuntu Linux and Wine

Well done Myke, I am also an Ubuntu user. I have installed FH4 and its fine up to the point where you have to enter the licence key whereupon it says the combination is not valid. Anyone got any thoughts on this please ? It might be quite interesting to see whats wrong using Wine, but I won't bother...

Metatags

Hi Chris,

Sorry, you are right - confusing my metatags here. You are right the title does correctly give the name of the person. It's the description tag that stays the same for each page.

Maybe not such a problem then.

Metatags

Thanks Jane, Thanks for your response. Yes, I'd found that page, but unfortunately it only allows you to place the same code in the head section of every page in the website and such repetition is certain to reduce your Google rankings. What we need is an option to automatically place the following ...

Metatags

When we produce a website from FH we usually want to publish it on the web for others to share and to perhaps generate leads on our ancestors. Good Google indexing is essential for this and one simple (though by no means foolproof) way to get a good Google result is if the metatags description direc...
